Abstract

This research aims to describe how public opinion determines the Indonesian government's public diplomacy efforts in responding to the Malaysian protest issue related to the sinking ship regulation using a qualitative descriptive method. The policy of sinking ships implemented by Indonesia on Malaysian fishing boats crossing Indonesian waters has drawn criticism from the Malaysian public who consider the sinking to be an act of unilateral confrontation from the Indonesian government. As a result, tensions arise in Indonesia-Malaysia relations, which require responsive efforts from Indonesia to defuse tensions between the two countries. Therefore, this study uses the concept of public opinion in foreign policy by analyzing how public opinion determines Indonesia's public diplomacy efforts in responding to Malaysian public opinion. This study finds the answer that public diplomacy carried out by the Indonesian government is the government's response to Malaysian public opinion. Keywords: Malaysian Public Opinion, Public Diplomacy, Public Opinion in Foreign Policy, Sinking Ship Policy.

Abstract

Vietnam is one of the countries with great potential in the tourism sector. Vietnam issued a Welcome to Vietnam tourism campaign in 2004–2005 and continued with Vietnam the Hidden Charm in 2006-2011. The campaign was quite successful in boosting the prestige of Vietnam's tourism in the eyes of the world, but, of course, there are still some things that must be improved by the government in order to make Vietnam's tourism a quality tourism destination. Therefore, in 2012–2019, Vietnam issued a Timeless Charm campaign as an effort to brand their tourism. To realize this brand, Vietnam made efforts which will be analyzed using the concepts of destination branding and public diplomacy. By using the concept of destination branding and public diplomacy, we get results, namely the various efforts that have been made by the government through their campaigns that directly target the community in the form of infrastructure improvements, natural and human resource management, and improvements to applicable regulations that are implemented quite well. In line with this, Vietnam experienced an increase in tourist arrivals in the 2012-2019 period, which was accompanied by an increase in its FDI. This study used a descriptive qualitative method.

Abstract

Indonesia agreed to increase bilateral economic cooperation with Australia in the Indonesia Australia-Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (IA-CEPA). The results of the IA-CEPA agreement discuss trade, services, investment, E-commerce, competition policy, economic cooperation, institutional provisions, and frameworks. However, based on the IA-CEPA agreement, it poses many threats to Indonesia in the fields of exports, imports, and investment. Australia is one of the countries that contributes to the largest trade deficit to Indonesia. In the investment sector, the amount of investment entering Indonesia has not been well controlled by Indonesia, thus deepening Indonesia’s balance of payments deficit. This study uses a descriptive qualitative method with the concept of determinant factors on foreign policy by William D. Coplin. It was found that there are factors that influence Indonesia’s decision to approve the IA-CEPA, namely domestic politic conditions, economic and military conditions and international contexts.
