Abstract

The aim of this research is to find out how the implementation of role plays can improve the students’ speaking skill of grade VII of MTs Mualimin Muhammadiyah Yogyakarta in academic year 2011/2012 and how students respond to the use of role plays methods in teaching and learning process. This research is an action research. In this study the researcher uses action research theory proposed by Kemmis and McTaggart. The participants of the research are the students of grade VII of MTs Mualimin Muhammadiyah Yogyakarta in academic year 2011/2012. The research instrument used by the writer is in the form of observation checklist and test. The data in the research are mainly gathered through the use of pre-test, observation, questionnaires, and post-test. After the data are collected, the researcher analyzes them. The researcher uses the pre-test as the basis for measuring the students’ reading skill. The finding of the research shows that the implementation of translation and discussion can improve students’ speaking skill of grade VII of MTs Muhammmadiyah Yogyakarta in academic year 2011/2012. In the pre-test result, in which they formerly did not learn using discussion and translation, the mean of the pre-test was 55.64. After they learnt English using discussion and translation, the mean of the post-test was 63.3. The students’ response was positive when role plays methods were applied in teaching speaking.

Abstract

The purpose of this research is to know the effect of affinity group in EFL reading classroom of English Department students in University of PGRI Yogyakarta. In measuring the reading comprehension of students the pre-test and post-test are done. The experiment of reading comprehension is done by recruiting of 19 students of EFL reading classroom and do the training and exercising of reading text in reading class. These students are all second-year at PBI-UPY and aged between 17 and 20. Standard measurement is comparison of students answer in pre-test and post-test of reading exercises. The result of this research is students who passed the standard score improved from 25% in the preliminary data to 71% at the end of the research. It means that affinity group strategy improves students’ reading comprehension that is influenced by student’s factors and lecturer factors.

Abstract

The intention of this study is to describe the effectiveness of buzz group in EFL reading classroom of English Department students of PGRI University. The comprehension analysis is intended by comparing the answer of EFL reading classroom students in reading exercises. In order to sequence the reading comprehension of the EFL reading classroom the pre-test and post-test of reading exercises are measured. The experiment of reading comprehension includes the recruitment of 40 students of EFL reading classroom, the training, and exercising of reading text in reading exercises. These students are all first-year female teacher training students at PBI-UPY and aged between 17 and 23. The measurement is compare with pre-test and post-test of reading exercises. Standard measurement is comparison of students answer in pre-test and post-test of reading exercises.

Abstract

The research aims to find out the effectiveness of Digital Story Telling media in listening class students at University of PGRI Yogyakarta. This research was experimental research which used quasi experimental method. Therefore, the data were collected by observation, interview, test, and questionnaire. Samples of this research were 28 students of 10 male and 18 female in the second semester English department students. The samples were divided into two groups, there were experiment group and control group. Both of groups were given pretest before treatment and posttest after treatment. Students in experiment group got treatment to study English listening by Digital Story Telling. The result of the research shows that Digital Story Telling is effective to improve listening skill. Result of the hypothesis measured from the post-test of the experiment class. The result shows the value of significance t-test is 0.000 which is lower than 0.05. It means that Ha is accepted and H0 is rejected. Mean of control group in pre-test is 34.28, thus in experiment group is 37.85. Mean of control group in post-test is 39.28, while in experiment group 47.14. It concludes that Digital Story Telling as media is effective to improve student in learning listening at second-semester student in English Language Education Study Program at the University of PGRI Yogyakarta.

Abstract

Melalui kegiatan pengabdian ini, tim pengabdi memberikan pelatihan pengembangan media pembelajaran untuk pembelajaran Bahasa asing berbasis IT kepada pengurus, dan pembimbing. Media pembelajaran dikembangkan menggunakan Microsoft Power Point yang diintegrasikan dengan aplikasi Sound of Text. Remaja Masjid Bilal Bin Robbah beranggotakan remaja–remaja muslim yang tinggal dekat masjid. Sebagaimana remaja pada umumnya, handphone dan Laptop merupakan dua alat komunikasi hasil perkembangan teknologi yang sangat disenangi oleh remaja masjid Bilal Bin Robbah. Orangtua dan para pembimbing remaja masjid khawatir para remaja masjid ini terpengaruh oleh dampak negative penggunaan Handphone dan laptop tersebut. Kemampuan menggunakan Bahasa Inggris dan Bahasa Arab juga menjadi kekhawatiran orang tua dan pembimbing karena para remaja tersebut mengaku kesulitan dalam mempelajarinya padahal dua bahasa tersebut sangat penting saat ini. Media pembelajaran yang dihasilkan dalam pelatihan dan pendampingan diimplementasikan pada pembelajaran Bahasa Inggris dan Bahasa Arab kepada anak–anak binaan remaja masjid. Kegiatan pengabdian ini memberikan manfaat bagi para pendamping dan remaja masjid sebagai kegiatan pengembangan bahasa asing dengan memanfaatkan informasi teknologi sebagai media belajar. Hasil dari penelitian, para remaja masjid merasa senang karena dapat mengulang kembali media pembelajaran Bahasa Inggris dan Bahasa Arab dimanapun dan kapanpun. Suara, cara membaca atau pengucapan kedua bahasa tersebut dalam Power Point mempermudah mereka dalam belajar. Through this service activity, the service team provides training in developing learning media for IT-based foreign language learning to administrators and mentors of youth mosque. Learning media was developed using Microsoft PowerPoint which is integrated with the Sound of Text application. The youth of the Bilal Bin Robbah Mosque consist of Muslim youths who live near the mosque. Like teenagers in general, cellphones and laptops are two communication tools resulting from technological development that are mostly liked. Parents and mentors for mosque youth are worried the negative impact of using those tools. The ability to use English and Arabic is also concern for parents and supervisor as those two languages ​​are very important at this time. These teenagers admit that they have difficulty in learning them. The learning media produced are implemented in learning English and Arabic for children. The service activity provides benefits for mosque assistants and youth as foreign language development activities by utilizing IT as a learning medium. For the result, the youth of the mosque feel happy because they can repeat learning English and Arabic in any occasion. Voice, how to read or pronounce the two languages ​​in Power Point make it easier for them to learn.

Abstract

The objective of this research is the importance of use bilinguals to improve the students’ ability in English, the use of the both of languages is very important to help students to understand the English material delivered by the teacher. Besides that, it makes it easy for them to understand the meaning of vocabulary and English sentences and also make them feel comfortable in taking English lessons. To explore students’ knowledge about the effect of using bilingual the use of English and Indonesia to improve their ability in English learning, the researcher conducts a study of “Students’ Perception of the Importance of Using Bilingual in English Learning Ability. The result of this study was the students had positive perception toward the importance of using bilingual (Bahasa Indonesia and English) in English learning process. The data analysis of the information obtained from the questionnaire and the interview confirmed these results. The questionnaire data showed that from 10 statements, there are 9 statements had the “Strongly Agree” response of the students. It was proven by the central tendency of each statements got the average above “80%” which is based on assessment interval on Likert Scale where index 80%-100% means “Strongly Agree”.

Abstract

The COVID-19 pandemic has led to a surge in the popularity of online learning, offering students greater flexibility and accessibility. However, students with hearing impairments encounter significant challenges in accessing learning materials and communicating with teachers and peers. This study aims to investigate the experiences of students with hearing impairments using a Learning Management System (LMS) for online learning focusing on their challenges they face and the strategies they employ in their learning. The research was conducted using a descriptive qualitative design at private universities in Yogyakarta. Semi-structured interviews were conducted to gather the data involving three students with hearing impairments who have used LMS in online learning as the participants. The findings revealed the challenges that included the use of multiple applications, lack of understanding on the LMS, lack of LMS notifications, material mismatch, unstable internet connection, tool constraints, lack of inadequate facilities, and there is no training on the use of the LMS. Additionally, the strategies used by the students included self-study, assignment submission via email, asking others for help, using additional apps, using a typist facility, and joining WhatsApp group discussions.
