Abstract

Background: The scientific-based jamu development program enables the development of medicinal plants in the traditional medicine system that eventual-ly can be used in the formal healthcare system. Baturraden and Sumbang are considered as areas with abundant plant biodiversity in Java, where the local community has used those plants for medicinal purposes. Objective: This study is conducted to qualitative and quantitatively record and conserve the knowledge of the Baturraden and Sumbang community on the utilization of plants for treating diabetes mellitus.Method: The data of the plant’s local names, plant organs, methods of prepara-tion, and routes of administration of the herbal preparations used for treating diabetes mellitus were collected through semi-structured interviews with 97 informants. The species use-value (SUV), the relative frequency of citation (RFC), and fidelity level (FL) of each species were calculated accordingly to determine their relative importance and value to the local community.Result: There were 11 plant species from 10 families mentioned. The most commonly used plant organ, preparation method, and administration route were leaves, decoction, and oral, respectively. The most important and valuable plants were including Piper ornatum (SUV = 0.19, RFC = 0.13, FL = 23.09%) and An-drographis paniculata (SUV = 0.09, RFC = 0.07, FL = 42.86%).Conclusion: As the most critical antidiabetic plant in the studied area, the decoction or infusion of Piper ornatum leaves is taken orally 1-2 times a day. However, there are no reports on its anti-diabetic-related activities available to date. In contrast, the uses of Andrographis paniculata as the antidiabetic agent has been widely proven. Baturraden and Sumbang people orally consumed the decoction of this plant’s leaves once a day for the said purpose

Abstract

Diabetes mellitus disease (DM) is chronic diseases due to the increase of glucose concentration in the body. The compliance and successful treatment of diabetes are needed to prevent complications. The patients’ compliance in using the medicine is an important factor of the successful therapy. One of the most comprehensive interventions for DM patients is Home Pharmacy Care. Objective: This study aims to determine the effect of Home Pharmacy Care role in patients with diabetes mellitus in increasing the compliance and successful therapy. Method: This research is pre experimental research conducted at Bp Sentra Medika Clinic and counseling at home respondents in Lebaksiu ,Tegal with using the method of one group pretest posttest design. Purposive sampling method is used in this research and got 35 respondents. Measurements were made using the MMAS-8 (pretest-postest) and pill count instrument to determine the patient's compliance level and the glucotest to measure the success of therapy characterized by blood sugar levels. Statistics test uses Wilcoxon and Mc Nemar to determine the effect of provision of Home Pharmacy Care intervention on compliace and successful therapy level. The results: showed that a total of 20 patients (57%) comliance to MMAS-8 and pill count scores and a total of 20 patients (57%) of successful treatment were achieved based on controlled blood glucose levels. Conslusion: The statistical test showed that there was a significant difference between before and after intervention marked with the value of p value of both tests was 0,000 so that there is an effect of giving Home Pharmacy Care toward the improvement of compliance and successful therapy. Keywords : diabetes mellitus, homepharmacycare, prolanis, compliance and successful therapy level

Abstract

An ethnopharmacological study is an initial step for the development of jamu, which has been simultaneously conducted throughout Indonesia. This study aimed to explore the utilization of medicinal plants in Baturraden, a region with relatively rich plant biodiversity in Java. Our research is a quantitative ethnobotanical study reporting the utilization of medicinal plants as a single plant botanical preparation in the studied area. The data were collected through semi-structured interviews with 36 informants on the local names, indications, parts used, method of preparation, and application of the plants. The species use-value (SUV), relative frequency citation (RFC), and the fidelity level (FL) of each species were calculated accordingly. The study recorded the utilization of 47 species of medicinal plants, which were employed to treat 32 ailments. Leaves, decoctions, and oral were recorded as the most commonly used plant part, herbal preparation, and application. There were 24 botanical preparations with the FL value of 100%, which were indicated for the treatment of fourteen diseases/symptoms. Curcuma longa, Zingiber officinale, Piper betle, Cymbopogon citratus, Andrographis paniculata, Syzygium polyanthum, Citrus aurantiaca, and Zingiber montanum were considered as the most important and valuable plants by the local community. Hence, those plants should be evaluated further for their pharmacological activity and developed into standardized botanical preparations.
