Abstract

Independent Curriculum has given a new nuance to the education system in Indonesia. There are several significant changes in the independent curriculum, which aims to achieve optimal curriculum standards. Thus, this research aims to find out the stages of implementing this independent curriculum in English as Foreign Language (EFL) classrooms. This research took a single case study design and was conducted at a boarding-based junior high school. The researchers observed learning activities and interviewed an English teacher and fifteen students from three different classes. Observation and interviews provided data on how to implement the independent curriculum in EFL classes, which is supported by interview results. The results showcased that the teacher applied three practical stages in implementing the independent curriculum, namely planning and preparation, learning enactment, and evaluation. These stages cover the application of diagnostic assessments, formative and summative assessments, and teacher’s emphasis on student-centered learning strategies and integration between differentiated learning and cooperative learning. The integration of these three phases forms the main basis for an in-depth understanding of the dynamics and effectiveness of curriculum-based independent learning in the context of this research.

Abstract

This paper examines how Project-Based Learning (PjBL) affects students' engagement in English when taught in a virtual learning environment. The case study was classroom-based and used data collected through interviews with twenty-five participants engaged in a virtual PjBL enactment. The data were analyzed using thematic analysis, while member checking was also used to ensure the data’s trustworthiness. The study found that the PjBL enactment had improved students’ learning engagement in three ways. First, the cognitive impact was seen in the participants’ experiences of a culture of self-directed learning where they were involved in the inquiry process through scaffolding activities. Second, their behavioral engagement was seen in their active involvement in project presentations and their shift in attitude towards the use of technology in virtual PjBL. Finally, their emotional engagement was reflected in the increased personal self-esteem and the change in the lecturer-student interaction. This research suggests that PjBL should be used more extensively in virtual classrooms because it positively impacts the students’ learning engagement and boosts their motivation to learn English.

Abstract

The paper intends to enquire about the effectiveness of paraphrasing in evolving the EFL students' writing ability for Indonesian Higher Education. The study was quasi-experimental research, and it was conducted in the 4th semester of the English students at  Universitas Sulawesi Barat. The research instrument was a writing test, and the student’s scores were gathered through paraphrasing rubric scores. Statistical inferential analysis was performed on the data.  It is possible to conclude that The Ha (Alternative) Hypothesis was established hence the paired samples test result carried out with SPSS performed that the sig. rating on the value obtained from the T-test was lower than Sig. value, so theory Y assumptions (Ha) were approved, and both the pilot testing and post-intervention results of the study demonstrated Sig. (2-tailed = 0.000) has been less than 0.05. In other words, this indicates that there is a consequence. The research finishes with pedagogical recommendations for trying to better the paraphrasing skills of novice student writers, and paraphrasing has a medium effect on the EFL students’ writing ability in Indonesian higher education.

Abstract

The study sought to investigate the perception of English teachers in madrassas and pesantrens toward the English Language Teacher Training (ELTT) program they underwent for five months. A convergent mixed-method research design was used, comprising a set of questionnaires administered to thirty-two teachers across three cities, namely Banjarmasin, Metro, and Palembang. Subsequently, interviews were conducted with twelve teachers who participated in the study. Interactive data analysis was employed to analyze the results obtained from the questionnaires and interviews. The study found that numerous teachers reported receiving significant benefits in their teaching and learning skills after participating in the ELTT program, including a boost in self-esteem when delivering English language instruction and enhanced English teaching abilities. However, participants also highlighted internet connectivity and time management as major hurdles that required attention. Hence, it is recommended that the Ministry of Religious Affairs continues to implement the program since it provides teachers with opportunities to enhance their English teaching skills. Consequently, this will enable students to receive greater exposure to the English language, facilitating their learning process.

Abstract

This research introduces a practical and innovative model for integrating religious moderation values into English Language Teaching activities. Recognizing the multicultural and diverse nature of language learners, this model aims to bridge the gap between language instruction and the incorporation of religious perspectives, fostering a more inclusive and culturally sensitive language learning environment. Phenomenological research used by the researchers as a research design. Grounded in the principles of CLT, the proposed model provides a framework for designing activities for teaching English that seamlessly integrate religious values, encouraging learners to engage in meaningful and contextually relevant language use. The findings showed that the English lecturers have already instilled the values of religious moderation using various ways. The model of lesson plans highlights the significance of including essential social themes like radicalism and tolerance into English lessons plans for university students. It is conducted by employing various multimedia resources, collaborative activities, and reflective assignments to foster dynamic and interactive learning environments that not only increase language proficiency but also encourage critical thinking skills and cultural sensitivity.

Abstract

This research is examining the perceptions of manga readers towards English-translated manga and its impact on their reading skills. It evaluates both micro and macro aspects of reading skills enhancement. Employing a convergent mixed methods approach, data was collected in two phases: qualitative interviews with 15 active manga readers and quantitative questionnaires with the same participants. Results indicate a positive perception among manga readers towards English-translated manga, facilitating self-directed learning and enhancing English reading skills. Improvement spans across various reading skills, including linguistic aspects such as grammatical form and word meaning, and macro skills like identifying main ideas and extracting general information. The study, conducted at the English Education Department of Antasari State Islamic University Banjarmasin, suggests that English-translated manga effectively attract readers and motivate them to engage with English materials. Recommendations for future research include exploring similar media formats like webtoons or comics, investigating other reading skills such as writing, and conducting further tests to assess the extent of reading skill improvement among manga readers.

Abstract

Abstract: This research aims to explore the senior high school students’ perception on Independent Curriculum implementation in English as a Foreign Language (EFL) classroom, particularly in English-speaking class activities. The shift from the previous curriculum to the independent curriculum resulted in many significant changes for teachers and students. In this case, the English subject experienced a complete change when the independent curriculum was implemented in schools, especially in teaching speaking skill. Using Photovoice research design, the researchers observed the speaking class, analyzed the photos taken by eleven students from three different classes during English-speaking activities and administered in-depth interview to these participants dealing with their photos. This research was conducted at SMAIT Ukhuwah Banjarmasin, South Kalimantan. The findings portrayed that the photos taken by students in the English-speaking class captured memorable, harmonious learning moments that were conducive, communicative, informative, and an accurate depiction of the atmosphere of the English-speaking class. This is further demonstrated from the students’ perspective through their photos showing communicative activities during English-speaking classes since the photos portray a well-organized, positive, engaging, and fun classroom environment as well as emphasizing individual development in line with the independent curriculum demand. The research highlights the effectiveness of the Independent Curriculum in fostering student engagement and communicative activities, suggesting that visual-based methodologies like Photovoice can provide meaningful insights into classroom dynamics
