Abstract

This study aims to explore the life experiences of female inmates at the Class IIA Tanjung Gusta Penitentiary in Medan, specifically in interpreting the process of repentance and religious rehabilitation during their incarceration. Utilizing a field study method, the findings indicate that religious guidance provided by religious teachers (ustadz), combined with vocational training, significantly contributes to the inmates' selftransformation. Furthermore, structured religious programs strengthen spiritual and emotional resilience, assisting inmates in managing remorse while fostering new hope. Additionally, independence training such as sewing, culinary arts, and handicrafts equips inmates with the productivity needed to reintegrate into society and achieve a prosperous life. Despite constraints in specialized women's health facilities, the gradual internalization of religious values and a professional work ethic reconstructs the inmates' identities into more responsible and positive individuals.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the implementation of the mangalehen parompa tradition, examine its social and philosophical values, and describe the efforts made to preserve it in Sibangkua Village. This research employed a qualitative method with a field research approach. Data were collected through interviews, documentation, and literature review, and were analyzed using descriptive qualitative techniques involving data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion drawing. The findings show that mangalehen parompa is a customary obligation fulfilled by the mora (the wife's family) toward their daughter and has been passed down from generation to generation. The tradition serves as an important requirement in the customary life of the community and embodies social values such as kinship, solidarity, and social cohesion. Its philosophical values are reflected in the prayers and hopes symbolized through the parompa motifs and the elements of indahan mangupa. The preservation of this tradition is carried out through the transmission of cultural values and the active involvement of the younger generation in every customary ceremony. Therefore, mangalehen parompa represents a form of local wisdom that strengthens the cultural identity and kinship of the Angkola community in Sibangkua Village.

Abstract

This study examines the Tolak Bala (warding off misfortune) ritual in Serbananti Village, Sipispis District, Serdang Bedagai Regency, as a form of “living culture” that integrates Javanese cosmology and Islamic values through Javanese  primbon  calculations. The study aims to explore the role of  primbon  in sustaining the ritual and negotiating its compatibility with Islamic beliefs. Employing a qualitative approach, data were collected through observation, in-depth interviews with customary leaders, religious figures, and ritual participants, documentation, and literature review. Data were analyzed using the Miles and Huberman interactive model and validated through source triangulation. The findings show that the continuity of the Tolak Bala ritual is supported not only by the historical significance of the graves of two early Islamic propagators but also by the adaptive function of primbon. It serves both as a framework for determining ritual timing and as a medium for negotiating cultural practices within Islamic beliefs. Consequently, practices such as  sesaji, tahlil, personal prayers, and incense burning are reinterpreted by the community as practices compatible with Islamic values. Differences in community perspectives regarding the ritual’s religious legitimacy further demonstrate the fluid and continuously negotiated nature of living culture. Thus, primbon functions as a local epistemology that mediates the preservation of Javanese-Islamic cultural identity while enabling the Tolak Bala tradition to adapt to changing religious and social contexts in Serbananti Village
