Abstract

The research titled “The Relevance of Sufi Teachings to the Lifestyle of Generation Z” aims to gain an understanding of the lifestyle of Gen Z. This study employs a qualitative research method using interviews, observation, and documentation. Sufism is an esoteric science in Islam, serving as a spiritual path that helps address inner diseases, loss of life’s meaning, and spiritual emptiness. Generation Z may be trapped in a consumptive and hedonistic lifestyle due to living amid strong currents of digitalization and social media. However, there are also members of Gen Z who show tendencies toward Sufi values such as zuhud (asceticism), shukr (gratitude), tawakkul (trust in God), and muhasabah (self-reflection), especially when supported by religious education and a positive spiritual environment. The findings of this study reveal that a contextual and creative Sufi approach through digital media, family environment, character education, and the role of religious figures can help shape a Gen Z character that balances worldly life with spiritual values.

Abstract

Purpose of the study: This study aims to explore Jean-Paul Sartre’s existentialist perspective on human existence, emphasizing radical freedom and the responsibility of individuals in defining their own meaning in life. The research investigates how Sartre's concept of existentialism positions humans as autonomous subjects in constructing their essence. Methodology: This study employs a qualitative descriptive-analytical approach, utilizing a literature review method. The primary sources include Sartre’s major works, such as Being and Nothingness, along with secondary analyses from contemporary existentialist scholars. Data are analyzed through content analysis to examine Sartre’s views on freedom, responsibility, and self-determination. Main Findings: The findings reveal that Sartre perceives human existence as devoid of inherent meaning, compelling individuals to create their own purpose through conscious choices. His concept of bad faith illustrates the tendency to escape from existential responsibility, whereas authentic existence requires embracing radical freedom. Sartre’s framework highlights the psychological tension between autonomy and existential anxiety. Novelty/Originality of this study: This study offers a fresh interpretation of Sartre’s existentialism by relating his views to contemporary issues of identity, freedom, and personal responsibility. It extends the discussion of existentialist ethics in modern society and provides a deeper analysis of Sartre’s influence on current philosophical and social discourses on human autonomy.

Abstract

This study aims to explore the Tingkeban tradition, which has undergone acculturation with religious values as a form of cultural adaptation among the Javanese community in North Sumatra. Its primary focus is on how the symbolic meanings of this tradition are perceived by Javanese people within the social environment in which they live. This research employs a qualitative method with a phenomenological approach to investigate in depth the practice of Tingkeban in Pangkalan Lunang Village, North Labuhanbatu. Primary data were obtained through observation, interviews, and documentation involving Javanese community members, religious leaders, and pinisepuh (customary elders). The findings show that Javanese migrants continue to preserve the Tingkeban tradition as an inherited cultural legacy, although its practice and meaning have shifted from those in the place of origin, even while its physical ritual elements still resemble the original form. Tingkeban is intended as a supplication for the safety of women who are seven months pregnant so that both mother and child may be granted health and protection. Each stage of the ritual is accompanied by prayers, shalawat, and dhikr, thereby integrating customary rites with Islamic principles.
