Abstract

Teledentistry is an examination and consultation of patients to the dentist without going through face-to-face visits, but with the help of an online application. The purpose of the activity is to help and facilitate Co-ass students of the Faculty of Dentistry, Andalas University, to fulfill the requirements for oral diagnosis via online (teledentistry) during the covid 19 pandemic. The activity is carried out in the form of examination/screening of patients carried out by Co-ass students whom Hospital Precept accompanies at the Faculty of Dentistry, Andalas University (Lecturer). Activities to be carried out consist of counseling, coordinator, mentoring, and monitoring of implementation and evaluation. The results of this activity can meet the patient's need for dental and oral examinations and expand access to dental care. Dental and oral health is essential for every individual, especially for carrying out functions such as eating, speaking, aesthetics, and feeling comfortable throughout the day. The Covid-19 pandemic limits the community's social conditions, including their need to get dental and oral services from dentists. In addition, dentistry is one of the jobs most at risk of contracting Covid-19 from patients. Through teledentistry activities, a dentist takes anamnesis to patients, clinical examinations are carried out through consultation through pictures and videos, diagnosis as initial information in planning further treatment, and supportive care such as patient education.

Abstract

Screening for dental caries and risk for caries in young children prior to school entry couldidentify caries at an earlier and reversible stage, and lead to interventions to treat existing caries, prevent progression of caries, and reduce incidence of future lesions. Screening strategies typicallyinclude oral health risk assessment and visual examination to identify high-risk children, including thosewho already have caries. Primary care clinicians can play an important role in screening for dentalcaries. Therefore, community service activities to prevent dental caries can improve and care for dentaland oral health at the national level. Through this dedication is expected dentists can share knowledgeto the community as a form of community service. The service activities are held in SDN 03 Alai Padang, as the cooperation form with Indonesia Dental Association (PDGI) to celebrate World oral HealthDay .This activity consist counseling and mass toothbrushing.

Abstract

Dental and oral health is essential for every individual, especially for carrying out functions such as eating, speaking, aesthetics and feeling comfortable throughout the day. Dentists recommend checking the patient's oral health every six months. The Covid-19 pandemic limits the community's social conditions, including the need for patients to get dental and oral services from dentists. In addition, the professional activity of a dentist is one of the jobs most at risk of contracting Covid-19 from patients. A social service activity aims to introduce the Teledentistry method to patients, Co-ass students, Preceptors, and the general public. Teledentistry is the examination and consultation of dental and oral disorders and treatment of patients to the dentist without going through a face-to-face visit, but with the help of an online application. Through teledentistry activities, a dentist can take anamnesis to patients, in which clinical examinations were carried out through consultation with pictures and videos facilitated by interactive virtual media. The oral diagnosis was obtained as initial information in planning further treatment, and supportive care was carried out in the form of patient education and an encouragement to habituation of healthy living behaviour.

Abstract

The prevalence of caries among school children in West Sumatera is still high. Dental health education is important in order to increase dental health status in children because of that the development of a new strategy in dental health education is needed. One of the way is by using game, because children usually like that media. This study was aimed to find out the effectiveness of dental education game by using snake and ladder as the media in changing 7-8years old student’s knowledge about teeth and mouth. The method of this study was analytic experimental with non equivalent pre and post test control group design. Fourty one student's with 7-8 years old of two Elementary Schools ( 17 Manggis Ganting and 03 Pulai Anak Air elementary school ) were used as the study sample of experiment group, this group was given dental education games method with snake and ladder games as the media and fourty one student's with 7-8 years old of 17 Manggis Ganting and 03 Pulai Anak Air elementary school were used as the control group where in this group was given nothing. Analysis of data was using Paired Samples T-Test and Independent Samples T-Test based on 0,05 as significant. The pretest and posttest analysis of knowledge showed that mean percentage of experiment group is 13,32% ±12,475 and 4,44% ±11,713 for the control group. Both of groups have significant difference where p=0,00(p<0,05). Dental education games method with snake and ladder games as media was effective in increasing student’s knowledge in comparing with the control group. So in order to increase dental health knowledge, dental education games could be use as one of dental education method for 7-8 years old students.

Abstract

Composite resin is the most frequently material used for restoring teeth but still failure cases are seen which leading to microleakage. Microleakage might be attributed to various factors, one of them is bonding agent. Various generations of bonding agents have been introduced to overcome the microleakage. The aim of this study was to evaluate the microleakage of composite restorations using the fifth and seventh bonding agent. Class I cavities (3X2X2 mm) were prepared on the occlusal surfaces of 32 human upper premolars. Teeth were classified into two groups according to the type of bonding agent used (n =16). Group I: Fifth Generation of Bonding Agent-Adper Single Bond2. Group II: Seventh Generation of Bonding Agent-Single Bond Universal. All cavities were restored with Filtek Z250 XT composite resin, stored in sterile aquades water at 370C for 24 h. The root apices were sealed with sticky wax, and all the surfaces, except for 2 mm from the margins, were coated with nail varnish. The teeth were immersed in a 1% methylene blue dye solution for 24 h, and then rinsed in running water, blot-dried and sectioned longitudinally through the center of restorations from the buccal to palatal surface. The sections were blindly assessed for microleakage of dye penetration by using a stereomicroscope. Data were collected and statistically analyzed by independent t -test. There was no significant difference (p>0,05) between two groups. The conclusion is fifth generation of bonding agent revealed less leakage compared to the seventh generation even statistically there was no significant difference. Keywords:Microleakage, fifth generation of bonding agent, seventh generation of bonding agent.

Abstract

Discoloration of teeth might be overcome by dental bleaching treatment. But the use of chemical bleaching agents caused a side effect. Therefore, many researchers were looking for alternative materials made from nature which is safer to used. Honey devided into 2 types, natural raw honey and packed honey, which both consist hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) that could whiten the teeeth. The purpose of this study was to compare the effectiveness of natural honey and packed honey for dental bleaching. This research was an in vitro experimental study with pre and post test control group design. 30 upper human premolar were used, devided into 3 groups based on bleaching agents used: 10 samples each group with application of natural honey, packed honey, and 10% carbamid peroxide. After application, samples were placed in incubator in 370C for 2 hours, then washed and soaked in artificiaal saliva, and incubated for 14 days. The colour change was observed by five observers using vitapan classical shade guide. The results of Kruskal-Wallis test showed p=0,000 witg significant value <0,05. Which means there was significant changes between before and after treatment. The average of tooth discoloration of 50% natural honey was 8,50, 50% packed honey was 7,30, and 10% carbamid peroxide as the contro group showed 10,10. In conclusion, natural honey was more effective in tooth whitening than packed honey.

Abstract

Glass ionomer cement and resin modified glass ionomer cement are one of the restoration materials that are widely used by dentists. Its presence in the oral cavity causes glass ionomer cement and resin modified glass ionomer cement often in contact with food and beverages such as tangerine juice which can affect the compressive strength. The purpose of this study is to determine the effect of immersion in tangerine juice towards the compressive strength of glass ionomer cement and resin modified glass ionomer. This study was a true experimental with a post test only with control group design. Samples were made from GC Fuji 9 GP and GC Gold Label 2 LC with 36 samples each. Samples were divided into two groups. The first group (18 samples of GC Fuji 9 GP and 18 samples of GC Gold Label 2 LC) was immersed in tangerine juice for 24 hours in an incubator at 37°C. The second group (18 samples of GC Fuji 9 GP and 18 samples of GC Gold Label 2 LC) as a control was immersed in artificial saliva for 24 hours in an incubator at 37°C. The compressive strength was determined using a compression machine. The results showed that the mean compressive strength of glass ionomer cement immersed in tangerine juice was 14,03±0,48 MPa and immersed in artifical saliva was 52,08±0,67 MPa. The mean compressive strength of resin modified glass ionomer cement immersed in tangerine juice was 58,98±0,97 MPa and immersed in artifical saliva was 68,28±0,67 MPa. Data were analyzed with Independent T-test showing the results of p<0.05. The conclusion of this study was that there was an effect of immersion in tangerine juice towards the decreasing of the compressive strength of glass ionomer cement and resin modified glass ionomer cement.
