Abstract

This research aimed to investigate the general patterns of linguistic configuration and socio-pragmatic functions of Indonesian-English code switching. It also explored the communication strategy that the Indonesian elites aim at when they do both IECS and EICS. This study used descriptive qualitative analysis. The data was collected from various speech interactions on TV program. The result shows that the linguistics configuration of Indonesian-English code switching are switch segments such as Noun Phrase (NP), Single Noun, Independent Clause, Verb and Adjective. The combinations of switch points of Indonesia-English code switching mostly occur between NP and HL suffix, between N and NP, between NP and Independent Clause, between V and NP, and Adj and N. In terms of types of code switching are namely; intraclausal (Iracla), Intraphrasal (Iraphra), Intralexical (Iralex), Interclausal and Tag. The socio-pragmatic function of Indonesian-English Code Switching based on the data using Gumperz’s model are interjection or sentence-filler, message qualification, personalization, and morphological adaptation. Furthermore, the communication strategy of code switching by Indonesian Elites is to adjust the message which they convey in order to emphasize the statement, also to attract their interlocutor so that they pay the attention to the speaker.

Abstract

This research aims to find out the students competence in using present continuous tense by the second grade at SMA Negeri 6 Kota Ternate. This research applied a descriptive quantitative method. The population was the eleventh grade of SMA Negeri 6 Kota Ternate with 47 students. The research sample consisted of 20 students. The data collection was through a writing test and interview. Then, the data were analyzed by descriptive statistical analysis. The results of this study showed that the proportion (frequency and percentage) of the test result was 15% got good, 25% got fairly good, 20% got fair, 5% got poor, and 35% got very poor. Most of the respondents got poor classification. It means that the score of students in present continuous tense is still low. The biggest error that is produced by eleventh grade students of SMA Negeri 6 Kota Ternate in using present continuous tense is because of misformation.

Abstract

The objective of this research to know the correlation between students’ vocabulary mastery and their English learning achievement at SMP Negeri 2 Kota Ternate. Data ware collected by through tests. A sample of 30 students of class VIII6 were selected purposively. The results of this research indicate that the average score of the students' vocabulary mastery test was moderate (56.86) and the score of the students' English achievement was also moderate (57). The test value of the correlation between the variables X and Y (correlated) was found a very high and r count result (0.9233) exceeded the t-table value (0.361) at a significant level of 5%. Thus the alternative hypothesis (Hi) is accepted and the hypothesis (Ho) is rejected. It can be concluded that the students’ vocabulary mastery was highly and significant correlated with the students’ English learning achievement.

Abstract

Isu perundungan di sekolah telah menjadi masalah serius di berbagai negara, termasuk Indonesia. Beberapa kasus terkenal yang melibatkan remaja di beberapa daerah di Indonesia telah menimbulkan dampak yang buruk bagi korban, seperti trauma psikologis, penurunan prestasi akademik, dan bahkan mengancam kesejahteraan mental dan fisik mereka.  Untuk mengatasi masalah ini, diperlukan upaya preventif, reparatif, dan punitif dari para orang tua, guru, dan masyarakat secara menyeluruh. Kolaborasi antara semua pihak ini penting untuk menciptakan lingkungan belajar yang aman dan mendukung di sekolah. Kegiatan sosialisasi perilaku perundungan di kalangan remaja dan guru di SMA Negeri 4 Ternate adalah salah satu upaya yang bertujuan untuk memberikan edukasi kepada remaja Indonesia tentang dampak yang ditimbulkan oleh perilaku perundungan serta pencegahan yang dapat dilakukan untuk mengurangi angka kasus perundungan. Dengan edukasi yang tepat, diharapkan para remaja akan lebih peka terhadap dampak negatif dari perundungan dan berperan aktif dalam mencegahnya. Seluruh komunitas sekolah, termasuk orang tua, guru, dan siswa, harus bekerja sama untuk menciptakan lingkungan yang aman dan mendukung di mana perundungan tidak memiliki tempat. Dengan upaya bersama ini, kita dapat mengurangi dampak negatif perundungan di kalangan remaja Indonesia.

Abstract

Dalam rangka menghadapi perubahan sosial, budaya, dan kemajuan teknologi yang begitu pesat, pemahaman masyarakat akan menggunakan sosial media harus ditingkatkan agar dapat lebih bijak dalam bersosial media. Pelaksanaan kegiatan pengabdian kepada masyarakat ini telah dilaksanakan dibeberapa lokasi di Desa Tabanga Kecamatan Ternate Barat seperti di sekolah SD, dan SMA. Dalam kegiatan ini kami telah melaksanakan penyuluhan mengenai etika dan moral dalam bersosial media dengan memberikan materi secara langsung kepada siswa. Hasil dari kegiatan ini yaitu memberikan edukasi kepada masyarakat tentang pentingnya etika dan moral dalam bersosial media. Tak hanya itu maraknya berita hoax yang beredar di dunia maya membuat banyak orang yang keliru dalam mendapatkan informasi dan berujung pada diskriminasi atau kebencian terhadap beberapa kelompok. Hasil dari kegiatan ini yaitu memberikan edukasi kepada masyarakat tentang pentingnya etika dan moral dalam bersosial media.

Abstract

This research discusses speech acts which are one of the basic elements in pragmatics. Speech acts consist of five categories, one of which is directive speech acts. This study aims to identify the types of directive speech acts contained in the cartoon film Raya and the last dragon, and also to determine the function of the directive speech acts used in the film. This study uses descriptive qualitative method in analyzing data. Data collection was carried out by reading film scripts and watching films to analyze the body movements, gestures and dialogues of each character. The results of the analysis show that there are eight types of directive speech acts found in the film, namely Question, Command, Advice, Asking, Entreating, Prohibiting, Permitting and Suggestion. Besides that, the general function of these types of directive speech act was found.

Abstract

The objective of this study is evaluating students’ competence in using adjective phrases in English writing. The objectives include assessing competence, identifying challenges/errors, and exploring influencing factors. This study applied a mixed-methods approach, combining quantitative questionnaires and qualitative analysis of writing samples, the research unveils varying levels of competence and error patterns. The findings show that students demonstrated a fairly good understanding of adjective phrases, attributive adjectives, and predicative adjectives. However, it was observed that, based on the types of adjective phrases, most students exhibited a better understanding of adjective phrases compared to attributive and predicative adjectives. The results of this analysis provide valuable insights in detailing specific aspects of the curriculum that may need to be strengthened or adjusted to improve student understanding. Overall, an in-depth understanding of the results of the analysis of student performance can provide a solid foundation for the development of more effective learning strategies and better customization of the curriculum according to student needs.

Abstract

This research aims to find out whether the use of storytelling techniques significantly improves students' speaking skills at SMA Negeri 5 Ternate City. This research uses quantitative methods with a pre-experimental design. This research involved 20 students as samples. Storytelling is used as a teaching technique. The research results show that the use of storytelling techniques can significantly improve students' speaking comprehension. The research results showed that the students' average score on the post-test was higher (73.05) compared to the pre-test score (46.35). The t-test shows that the t-statistic value (4.35) exceeds the table value (2.11) at a significance level of 0.05 and 20 degrees of freedom using a one-sided test. Therefore, the null hypothesis (HO) is rejected and the alternative hypothesis (H1) is accepted. Therefore, it can be concluded that the storytelling technique is useful for improving students' speaking abilities.
