Abstract

Flowers For Algernon, a novel by Daniel Keyes, is one of his most renowned literary works. It had won Nebula and Hugo awards. The story centers on Charlie, a 32-year-old man with a debilitating mindset who undergoes surgery to boost his IQ. The goal of this research is to elucidate the main character's description in Flowers for Algernon. The writer utilized a structural technique to analyze Daniel Keyes' more deeply since this method exposes as precisely, as thoroughly, as precisely, and as deeply as possible the connections and entanglement of all parts and aspects of literary works. The study demonstrates that each human being is born with unique characteristics, abilities, and impairments. Additionally, individuals should embrace who they are and be themselves, even though most of them seek to alter various parts of their lives.

Abstract

This research aimed to investigate the general patterns of linguistic configuration and socio-pragmatic functions of Indonesian-English code switching. It also explored the communication strategy that the Indonesian elites aim at when they do both IECS and EICS. This study used descriptive qualitative analysis. The data was collected from various speech interactions on TV program. The result shows that the linguistics configuration of Indonesian-English code switching are switch segments such as Noun Phrase (NP), Single Noun, Independent Clause, Verb and Adjective. The combinations of switch points of Indonesia-English code switching mostly occur between NP and HL suffix, between N and NP, between NP and Independent Clause, between V and NP, and Adj and N. In terms of types of code switching are namely; intraclausal (Iracla), Intraphrasal (Iraphra), Intralexical (Iralex), Interclausal and Tag. The socio-pragmatic function of Indonesian-English Code Switching based on the data using Gumperz’s model are interjection or sentence-filler, message qualification, personalization, and morphological adaptation. Furthermore, the communication strategy of code switching by Indonesian Elites is to adjust the message which they convey in order to emphasize the statement, also to attract their interlocutor so that they pay the attention to the speaker.

Abstract

This study aims to describe the features of linguistics items in Indolish as well as the register or style and the code switching. It used both oral and written data which were collected by in-depth interview of the participants who work as a bank officer. The data were analyzed by descriptive and qualitative analysis. The result of the study shows that the linguistics features of Indonesian English are omission, overgeneralization, and substitution. It also found that some of technical terms related to register using or style such as annual fee, analyst, approve, credit card, credit, payment, a credit loan, debtor, account officer, debtors’ data, System Information of Debtors (SID), loan, offering letter, loan agreements, credit disbursement, a funding officer, customer, and customer fun. Moreover, the phenomenon of code switching occurs based on the data as the characteristics of Indolish because the participants lack of their vocabulary in English and they do the code switch in order to make their interlocutor understand of what they have been said

Abstract

The aims of this study was to investigate the similarities and differences of ‘make” verb in English and ‘habu’ verb in Munanese language in terms of semantics and grammar construction. The data of this study consisted of English data which collected from Corpus of Contemporary American English (COCA) and Munanese language data that obtained from field research through process of observation and in-depth interview. Both of the data were analyzed by descriptive and qualitative analysis. The result showed that semantically,’make’ verb and ‘habu’ verb apply similar meaning that refers to ‘to create or prepare something by combining materials or putting parts together; to cause something to exist happen’. The differences of two verbs are on the grammatical construction. The verb ‘make’ is applied in construction VII. The interesting thing that ‘make’ verb also can be appied in variant construction VIIb (the variant which is not stated in the Dixon’s theoritical framework) based on COCA data. Meanwhile, the construction applied in habu verb is also construction VII, and some extra variant which is aso not stated in Dixon’s theory. Furthermore, ‘habu’ verb can be applied in Giving verb semantic role. As the main point, it is proved that the variety of language is determined of cutural background.

Abstract

This research is intended to find out the implementation of text based instruction model in teaching reading skill, and to find out the improvement of students’ reading  skill through the implementation of text based instruction model. In this study the researchers used functional text used students of second semester of english language education study program Khairun University as the data source of this research. The research instrument used in the form of observation checklist, and test. The data is in the research  are mainly gathered through the use of pre-test, observation, questionnaires, and post test. In analyzing the data, the researchers applied descriptive tehnique. After the data are collocted, they are analyze based on five indicators; scanning for the key words, skimming for the specific information, making inference, looking for topic, understanding paragraph. The result shows that the implementation of text based instruction model through pre-activity, while activity and post activity can improve the students’ speaking skill. The implementation of text based instruction model can improve students’ speaking skill of the second semester students of English language education study program Khairun university. In the pre-test result, in which they formerly did not learn using text based instruction model, the mean of pre-test was 50.05. After they learn English using Small group discussion, the mean  of post test was 75.09

Abstract

Comprehension is the main goal of reading. Reading comprehension is an attempt to understand, evaluate, and also recognize the author’s ideas in reading text. A reader needs comprehension to catch the content of message or information from the text. One of the alternative methods to improve the students’ reading comprehension is with Experience Text Relationship method. The purpose of this study is to improve the students’ reading comprehension, by implementing Experience Text Relationship (ETR). The method in this study is  Classroom Action Research (CAR) which has several sequenced procedures including planning, action, observation, and reflection. The technique of data analysis is divided into two namely quantitative which came from the reading tests, and qualitative data which came from the observation sheets. The result of the study shows that the ETR technique is one of the most effective strategies for teaching English especially to improve students’ reading comprehension  because the students had more chance to tell their stories that might be related to the materials that were taught.

Abstract

The Covid-19 had changed the educational system in Indonesia. The students must be survived with the change of educational system. They are required to use the internet-based media and technology during covid-19 pandemic. This study aimed to explore how the students experience of the change of learning system from face to face learning to online learning and finding deep information from the students who life in the rural area. The present study applied qualitative research to explore how the students in Maluku Utara survive in distance learning by examine how their experience in online learning. The result of this study gives several contributions about the how the students experience in online learning in Maluku Utara. The first, in conducting online learning the students must struggle with the condition of network in Maluku Utara. There were some areas that is not supported by the network so the students must go to the area that has a good network. This phenomenon becomes the main problem of the students in having online learning. The second, the process of online learning conducted both synchronous and asynchronous. They use social media as the media of communication, giving information and instruction. The third, most of the students used smartphone as the device in conducting online learning. However, in some school the student who does not have smartphone used I-pad from their school. The last, the students from Maluku Utara were easy to adapt the new system of learning.

Abstract

This research aims to find out the students competence in using present continuous tense by the second grade at SMA Negeri 6 Kota Ternate. This research applied a descriptive quantitative method. The population was the eleventh grade of SMA Negeri 6 Kota Ternate with 47 students. The research sample consisted of 20 students. The data collection was through a writing test and interview. Then, the data were analyzed by descriptive statistical analysis. The results of this study showed that the proportion (frequency and percentage) of the test result was 15% got good, 25% got fairly good, 20% got fair, 5% got poor, and 35% got very poor. Most of the respondents got poor classification. It means that the score of students in present continuous tense is still low. The biggest error that is produced by eleventh grade students of SMA Negeri 6 Kota Ternate in using present continuous tense is because of misformation.

Abstract

The objective of this study was to assess the E-learning readiness of the students in Maluku Utara. The present study used descriptive quantitative in design, aimed to examine the level of E-learning readiness among the students. From three bachelor subgroups, participants were selected using stratified random sampling. Students who had attended virtual classrooms for at least one semester during the Covid-19 Pandemic met the selection criteria. The results showed that during Covid-19 pandemic 59% of the students had ready for E-learning 34,2% neutral and 6,8% were not ready. Most of the participants had provided in internet access, devices used were available and the method used during online class were easy to adapt. The results also evidenced that the students supported two factors "Technological adaptation" and "Internet usage", so improving the technological facilities in this regard can enhance the students' readiness for E-learning. Many students around the world have adapted to online education as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. Additionally, the majority of participants in this study were well-prepared for E-learning, as demonstrated by the study's findings. So, the university can implement virtual education. However, it is necessary to increase the students' motivation to learn by providing them with the required infrastructure and training courses to learn new skills and soft wares.

Abstract

Dalam pembelajaran di sekolah, berkomunikasi dengan bahasa santun dan beretika sangat penting untuk digunakan oleh guru dan siswa. Namun pada kenyataannya, masih terdapat banyak guru dan siswa belum melakukan praktek sebuah komunikasi dengan tuturan yang santun dan tidak memperhatikan etika berbahasa. Kegiatan pengabdian masyarakat dalam bentuk pelatihan kesantunan dan etika berbahasa bagi guru dan siswa dalam pembelajaran di SMPN 4 Ternate ini bertujuan untuk memberikan pemahaman perihal kesantunan dan etika berbahasa dalam pembelajaran formal dan informal di sekolah. Pelatihan ini dilaksanakan di SMPN 4 Ternate yang diikuti oleh 10 orang guru dan 10 orang siswa. Adapun metode yang digunakan dalam kegiatan ini adalah Focus Group Discussion (FGD) dan pendampingan. Hasil dari kegiatan yang dilakukan dapat dilihat dengan kemampuan guru maupun siswa dalam membedakan tuturan yang santun dan kurang santun dalam proses pembelajaran. Selain itu, guru maupun siswa mampu menuliskan serta mempraktekkan secara langsung bagaimana cara bertutur santun dan etika dalam berbahasa seperti anak-dalam kalimat “anak-anakku sayang apakah kalian masih semangat belajar?” Atau tolong ambilkan tasku. Oleh karena itu, secara umum pengabdian ini dapat meningkatkan wawasan guru dan siswa terkait dengan kesantunan dan etika berbahasa dalam proses pembelajaran
