Abstract

Abstract

One of the three-year Dutch schools in Aceh is called People's School (Volkschool). Starting with the few Acehnese who are aware that there were once schools built by Dutch colonialists in Aceh before the foundation of schools as they are now. Because the history of the People's School (Volkschool) is not widely known among Acehnese, it makes for a very fascinating study subject. The purpose of this study is to understand more about how the People's School (Volkschool) in Aceh was founded and how its educational system operated during the Dutch colonial era. By using library research methods (Library Research) and oral sources (interviews). This study uses historical research methods, namely heuristics (data collection), source criticism (data verification), interpretation (data analysis), and historiography. The results showed that the first People's school (Volkschool) was formed in Aceh on December 30, 1907 in Ulee Lheu. This was motivated by the Dutch goal of realizing the desire of the Dutch East Indies government to spread education as widely as possible at the lowest possible cost. the three years of instruction at the People's School (Volkschool). The reading, writing, and math components of the Volkschool curriculum are its format. The Dutch colonialists paid for the classroom supplies, including slate and grip writing implements. Parents of pupils are required to cover expenses ranging from 10 cents to 15 cents. No fees were ever taken from pupils, not even in the early years of the school's existence or towards the conclusion of the colonial era. The Acehnese may be employed by the Dutch colonialists even though the wages were extremely poor after receiving an education at this institution. Although the Dutch colonialists initially forced the people of Aceh to send their children to the People's School (Volkschool), this compulsion ultimately led to exceptional outcomes. Where the people of Aceh may produce an enlightened generation like the one we have today and are no longer illiterate in Latin.

Abstract

This paper discusses how Islam is understood, taught, and practiced at the State Islamic Religious Higher Education Institution (PTKIN) in Aceh, whether the contextual approach and tolerance towards difference approach are used, whether there is any indication of the development of religious radicalism, how PTKIN in Aceh positions itself towards this problem, and also, how the environment and family play their roles on this issue. This qualitative study collected data by means of observation, in-depth interview, documentation, and focus group discussion. The data were then analyzed in the following steps:  data reduction, data display, verification, and conclusion drawing. The PTKIN selected as research sites consisted of Universitas Islam Negeri Ar-Raniry Banda Aceh, Institut Agama Islam Negeri Zawiyah Cot Kala Langsa, and Sekolah Tinggi Agama Islam Negeri Gajah Putih Takengon. In general, the findings revealed that PTKIN in Aceh has been relatively free from religious radicalism. The teaching of Islamic studies at PTKIN in Aceh still adheres to the Qur’an, Hadith and authoritative references from various sources and time periods, from classical to contemporary books, and from moderate to contextual approaches that respect differences in understanding. The small potential and threat of religious radicalism at PTKIN in Aceh, in addition to the academic system built within PTKIN itself, are influenced by the socio-cultural and political environment in Aceh which is quite accommodating to the aspirations of Islamic law. Islam in Aceh today is relatively compatible with the state because the state has given the Acehnese peoplethe right to exercise Islamic law, not only in the private sphere, but also in the public sphere. However, there is one potential threat that needs to be aware of, which is the way to commute between home and campus; and, this particular space needs to be bridged properly so that students will not be recruited by exclusive Islamic groups without the knowledge of the campus and their families.

Abstract

This study focuses on two key areas: the interpretation of Qur’anic verses regarding women’s leadership and its implementation within Sufi orders (tariqa) in South Sulawesi. The central question explored is how Sufi orders interpret these verses through a gender lens. To answer this question, a qualitative methodology employing interpretive and gender studies approaches was used. Data were collected through interview and literature review. The results of the research show that the perceptions of tarekat followers in South Sulawesi regarding the interpretation of verses regarding women's leadership in the public sphere. Some interpretations, based on Surah At-Tawbah [9:71], allow for women’s leadership by defining “awliya” as leaders, allies, and advisors, suggesting that both men and women can assume leadership roles if they possess the necessary competencies. Conversely, others, citing Surah An-Nisa’ [4:34], restrict women’s leadership. However, a closer examination indicates that Surah At-Tawbah [9:71] is a more general verse, while Surah An-Nisa’ [4:34] is context-specific, referring primarily to domestic matters. The implementation of leadership within Sufi orders is generally not at odds with these interpretations. In the public sphere, women have equal rights to men, including the right to vote and be elected. Moreover, there is no gender distinction in the concept of becoming a waliyullah, as exemplified by Rabi’ah al-Adawiyah. However, women have not yet assumed the role of murshid (spiritual guide) within Sufi orders due to several factors, including the historical precedent of male prophets and the physical and spiritual demands of the role. However, from a gender perspective,  women often hold the position of khalifah (spiritual deputy) assisting the murshid in teaching and even coordinating regional activities.

Abstract

Abstract: This study emerged from a crucial need to find out factors influencing educational staff in the implementation of Education for Sustainable Development in actual Dayah practices in Aceh. The objective of this research is to provide an extensive overview regarding how to boost the quality of teachers and educational employees in Aceh's Dayah. The study aims to create an effective step-by-step approach for increasing the quality of instructors and educational staff in Aceh's Dayah province. The study employs an explanatory qualitative method. Amongst the data resources are Dayah department leaders, program coordinators, and other employees and staff from Dayah educational departments. Despite the fact that academics possess diverse individual interests and motivations to participate in education for sustainable development, their engagement is influenced by factors such as the advantages of pursuing higher education, attending workshops and training, undertaking internships, and participating in capacity-building initiatives. However, resource limitations, including restricted financial means, limited access to information technology, and a lack of access to external organizational information, can potentially exacerbate the challenges mentioned earlier. This study provides a formulative model connected to disparities in policy and visions of sustainable development in regard to principles and roles of Dayah Education in enhancing the quality of educational programs.
