Abstract

Sustainable development in Central Sulawesi is demonstrated by long-term disparities between regions, which highlight the imbalance between economic, social, and environmental aspects. This study set out to examine the regional sustainability performance and explain the underlying structural factors that contribute to the existing disparities. This study uses secondary data from 2021 to 2024 to create a Sustainable Development Index (SDI) and combines it with quadrant analysis to identify patterns of regional sustainability. It also uses data regression panels to test the main economic, social, and environmental determinants. The research results show that no regency or city has achieved a completely balanced sustainability position, with areas spread across the quadrants of underutilization, overexploitation, and ecological emergency. The econometric results show that human development, unemployment dynamics, and environmental quality excert a profound impact on sustainability, while economic growth and per capita GDP do not have a significant effect. Model fixed effects confirm there is strong structural heterogeneity across regions, highlighting the importance of spatial and institutional context. This study contributes to theory by improving the understanding of sustainable development and regional development, and it shows that regional sustainability inequality is formed in a structural way and cannot be explained just by growth-based indicators.

Abstract

This community service activity aims to empower coastal communities in Kabonga Kecil Village, Banawa District, Donggala Regency. A participatory approach (involving the community at every stage), educational efforts (providing training and outreach), and an economic-based approach (creating business opportunities from mangroves) are key to implementing this program. The method used is the Participatory Rural Appraisal (PRA) approach, combined with the concept of community-based development in coastal resource management. The results of this community service include the replanting of 500 mangrove seedlings in an abrasion-affected area of 1 hectare, with the involvement of approximately 25 people through mutual cooperation, consisting of community members, village heads, youth leaders, and the community service team, providing hope for the restoration of coastal ecosystems. In addition, an initial initiative was established in the form of a mangrove care group with 10 members, which synergizes with the Palu City Mangrovers community. In the economic aspect, it has been agreed to develop the area as a potential mangrove ecotourism destination, which is expected to become an alternative source of income for the local community.

Abstract

Morowali Regency in Central Sulawesi has emerged as Indonesia’s leading nickel hub through the Indonesia Morowali Industrial Park (PT IMIP), a joint venture with China’s Tsingshan Steel Group. Since 2013, PT IMIP has attracted billions in investment and developed advanced smelters to meet global demand for electric vehicle batteries. While this expansion has boosted economic growth and employment, it has also raised serious environmental concerns. This study analyses the dual impact of nickel mining in Morowali Regency, using 2010–2024 data from the Central Statistics Agency and supporting literature. The objective is to measure the mining sector’s contribution to Gross Regional Domestic Product (GRDP) and evaluate its environmental consequences. A descriptive quantitative approach was applied to examine the relationship between GRDP and the mining sector, while qualitative analysis was used to assess environmental degradation. Results show that GRDP rose sharply from Rp4.10 billion in 2011 to Rp98.79 billion in 2024. Although the mining sector’s share declined from 41.67% to 18.18%, its absolute value increased, driving employment, socio-economic transformation, and business diversification. However, mining activities caused severe environmental damage, including 5,501 hectares of deforestation, marine ecosystem disruption, water and air pollution, and a surge in acute respiratory disease cases to 55,527 in 2024. Waste generation in Bahodopi District reached 40 tonnes per day, with inadequate management infrastructure. The study concludes that sustainable resource management policies are urgently needed to balance economic growth with environmental conservation, recommending stronger regulations, adoption of eco-friendly technologies, and community empowerment.
