Abstract

This article is an effort to make a clear map on contemporary Muslim intellectuals in the Middle East after the Arab defeat in 1967. The Six-Day War took place in June 1967 was a disaster for the Arab world. It ended the ideology of Pan-Arab nationalism and encouraged the rise of four compating self-criticism ideologies: Marxism, Liberalism, Fundamentalism and Nationalism. The four ideologies have their own particular responses and solutions to the Arab crisis. The result of this research shows that Islamic fundamentalism is still the strongest ideology compared to the secular ideologies. The Arab Spring in 2011 proved the fact and paved a way for the Islmists to become dominant in the political arena, as recently shown in Egypt. The other Islamist militant groups, such as Jama’ah Islamiyyah are now more free to promote the implementation of Islamic syari’ah.

Abstract

In general, Arabic is the official language of the Arab states. However, at the beginning of its contact with non-Arab societies, this language—that is always associated as the language of Islam—was not easily accepted by non-Muslims. One of them is Coptic community, the native of Egyptian people who are Christians and speak Coptic language. The spread of the Arabic language was a serious challenge for them both from the issue of social identity, culture, and religion. This paper attempts to elaborate the reactions and efforts made by the Coptic community on the influence of the Arabic language to their lives. In detail, the paper tries to answer research questions as follow: 1) Howwas the social and political background of Coptic community before and after the coming of Islam in Egypt? 2) How was the Islamization and Arabization process in Egypt? Did the process run concurrently or two things different from its periode? What is the influence of the Arabic language on socio cultural and religious aspects of the Coptic community? To arrive at these objectives, the author used descriptive analysis methods by reviewing previous studies related to the subject and combining it with current information. The results showed that: 1) from the socio-cultural side, Arabic has become Coptic identity that can be seen from their Arabic names and their integration as part of both in ritual and religious literature.

Abstract

The paper tries to elaborate the ideas of Hisham Sharabi on Neo-patriarchy culture and its relevance to the current situations. He perceived that Neo-patriarchy as one of main causes of the Arab crisis. According to him, the Arab societies in general did not adopt modernism in its real form. Therefore, rather transforming into modern society they turned into “distorted modernism.” The data of this research particularly are Sharabi’s works that were published during 1980s as crucial period of his intellectual journey. The paper found three major conclusions on neo-patriarchy culture postulated by Sharabi: 1) neo-patriarchy culture is the real form of Arab’s failure in transforming its societies into modern one, it reflected such as in authoritarian political system, economic dependent and social-political fragmentation; 2) criticism is pre-conditions for modern Arab societies’ transformation. One of the efforts to achieve real modernism according to Sharabi is to deconstruct some distorted definitions of democracy, civil society, etc., and build fresh meaning of the terms.

Abstract

This research aims to 1) define the washfī phrase in the translated Arabic novel of Girls of Riyadh by Marilyn Booth, 2) describe the technique, method, and quality of translation, 3) to define the ideology of the washfī phrase. This research used the descriptive qualitative method. The respondents evaluated the accuracy, acceptability, and readability of the translation result. This research data resourced with formal and material objects. The material object consists of two Arabic and English version novels. The formal object consists of the washfī phrase of both the novels at once questionnaire. The result of this research there are two kinds of techniques, they are: 1) single variant technique, 2) couplet variant technique. They are 11 techniques: 1) literal 3, 2) established equivalent 3, 3) reduction 1, 4) deletion 3, 5) borrowing 1, 6) generalization 1, 7) particularization 2, 8) variation 4, 9) adaptation 1, 10) addition 1, 11) discursive creation 2, 12) linguistic compression 1, 13) modulation 2. Couplet variant techniques are: 1) deletion+literal 1, 2) modulation+addition 1, 3) modulation+literal 1, 4) particularization + borrowing 1, 5) linguistic compression + particularization 2. This washfī phrase translation has high accuracy levels score 3, high acceptability 2, and low legibility levels 1.

Abstract

This research aims to determine politeness in Arabic sentences in the drama al-Khatām by Ali Ahmad Bākasīr using politeness theory according to Brown and Levinson. Using Brown and Levinson's politeness theory, Arabic politeness can be identified in al-Khatām's drama text. Details of the politeness of the language used can be seen when analyzing and observing the language in this drama, such as differences in social strata and life conflicts influencing the politeness of the language used between the speaker and hearer (H). This research is a type of qualitative descriptive research with a pragmatic approach. The data collection technique used was sorting and recording. The results of the study found positive politeness strategies used by the characters in this drama to maintain the cheerful face of the interlocutor in the form of paying attention to interests, desires, needs (not paying attention to H's interests, actions, goods, and desires), exaggerating interest, approval, support, and sympathy. (exaggerating interest, approval, sympathy for H), giving compassion to the interlocutor (showing empathy to H), seeking approval, and being optimistic (be optimistic). Negative strategies to maintain the speaker's negative face include pessimism, giving respect, and nominalization. Characters also do not perform speech acts or speak silently to prevent facial threats from appearing. Face-threatening actions are also found in the dialogue between characters in the drama al-Khatām, both threats to positive faces and threats to negative faces.

Abstract

This research paper explores the phenomenon of French code mixing in Arabizi within the Facebook group 'OFPPT: BTP & GÉNIE CIVIL.' The group comprises Arabic-speaking technicians and engineers from Morocco. The study aims to provide a comprehensive description of the French code mixing observed in this specific online community and investigates the factors influencing its occurrence. The sociolinguistic approach employed in this research incorporates the study of code mixing and its underlying causes. The primary data for analysis consisted of Arabic words, phrases, and technician-specific terminology found in uploads from January 2020 to December 2021 within the Facebook group 'OFPPT: BTP & GÉNIE CIVIL.' The data collection process involved note-taking techniques as well as screen captures and data tables for further analysis. The analysis of the collected data was conducted using referential and translational equivalent methods. The findings of this study reveal the presence of significant code mixing in Arabizi, combining elements of French and Arabic within the 'OFPPT: BTP & GÉNIE CIVIL' Facebook group. In its sociolinguistic context, French code mixing serves as an outer code mixing, while Arabic code-mixing functions as an inner code mixing. The Arab youth utilize this Arabizi code mixing to enhance their social standing, as French is perceived as a prestigious and modern language by them.

Abstract

This research examines new, unique Arabic terms and vocabulary used in the newspapers Indonesia Alyoum and Aswaq, two online media based in Indonesia and Malaysia, respectively, to elaborate on the development of the Arabic language in non-Arab countries. The invention of new Arabic words in these media primarily used the methods of al-taulīd bi al-iqtirāḍ, particularly al-dakhīl, and al-taulīd al-dalālī using al-tarjamah al-ḥarfiyah. Meanwhile, the method al-taulīd bi al-majāz, a metaphorical method, is to invent new, unique, local terms. However, the authors argue that both newspapers have differences in transliteration and inconsistent use of terms. In response to this language development, Malay Muslims show their potential to develop Malay-Arabic transliteration guidelines, compile a new Arabic dictionary, and even establish Southeast Asian Majma‘ al-Lugah al-‘Arabiyah. [Penelitian ini mengkaji istilah-istilah dan kosakata baru dan unik dalam bahasa Arab yang digunakan di surat kabar Indonesia Alyoum dan Aswaq, dua media online yang masing-masing berbasis di Indonesia dan Malaysia, untuk melihat perkembangan bahasa Arab di negara non-Arab. Pembentukan kosa kata baru pada media ini terutama menggunakan metode al-taulīd bi al-iqtirāḍ, khususnya al-dakhīl, dan al-taulīd al-dalālī yang berbasis al-tarjamah al-ḥarfiyah. Sedangkan metode al-taulīd bi al-majāz, metode metafora, dipakai untuk mengalihkan istilah-istilah lokal. Namun, kedua surat kabar tersebut memiliki perbedaan dalam transliterasi dan tidak konsisten dalam penggunaan kosa kata serapan tersebut. Sementara itu, dalam menyikapi perkembangan bahasa Arab ini, umat Islam Melayu berpotensi mengembangkan pedoman transliterasi Melayu-Arab, menyusun kamus bahasa Arab baru, bahkan mendirikan Majma‘ al-Lugah al-‘Arabiyah Asia Tenggara.]

Abstract

Arabic language, in its sociological context is divided into two varieties: fusha and ‘amiyya. Arabic fusha is the official language and perceived as the language of Islam. In contrast to the fusha, ‘amiyya is the language used by the Arab people in their daily conversations. However, this ‘amiyya is considered as inferior. The method used in this study was qualitative that stressed the interaction between language and its sociological context. The method assumed that social and political events affected language use in a particular society. The paper tries to re-popularize the two terms used by Ferguson that are "high variety" (H) and “low variety” (L) culture in analyzing the two languages varieties. Besides, the paper explores the tension of the two languages through contemporary social and political events taking place in the Arab World. The Arabic fusha is perceived as a representation of “H” culture because it is a language used in religious literature and official writings, while the ‘amiyya referred to as a representation of “L” variety culture because it is used only as a medium of regular communication.
