Abstract

The "Disability Health Education" program was implemented by Politeknik Kesehatan Kemenkes Malang at Posko Rescue Bela Negara, Karangduren, Pakisaji, Malang, May 23-25, 2024. The background of this program is to address the challenge of limited access to adequate health services for people with disabilities, who often face various obstacles in obtaining sufficient health education. The program aims to enhance knowledge and skills in five key areas: Clean and Healthy Living Behavior (PHBS), healthy food, personal hygiene, basic life support, and emergency management. The methods used included lectures, discussions, demonstrations, and hands-on practice. A total of 32 participants with disabilities participated in this program, accompanied by 10 students from the Applied Bachelor of Health Promotion, D-3 Health Insurance and the D-3 Medical Records and Health Information programs as facilitators. The effectiveness of the program was evaluated through pre-tests and post-tests to measure the increase in knowledge and skills of the participants before and after attending the program. The evaluation results showed a significant increase in the average post-test scores compared to the pre-test scores for all the taught materials. The frequency distribution of scores indicated an increase in the homogeneity of understanding among participants after attending the program. Descriptive statistical analysis showed that the average pre-test scores ranged from 6.25 to 6.69, while the average post-test scores increased to 8.12 to 8.19. The decrease in standard deviation in most materials indicated a more homogeneous distribution of scores after the program. In conclusion, the "Disability Health Education" program successfully improved the participants' health knowledge and skills significantly. Active participation and positive feedback from participants demonstrated the effectiveness of the teaching methods used. This program can serve as a model for similar health education programs in the future to provide broader benefits for the community of people with disabilities.

Abstract

Disaster-prone countries such as Indonesia require well-prepared Search and Rescue (SAR) volunteers, not only in technical rescue skills but also in basic health and safety knowledge. This community service program, conducted by lecturers and students of Poltekkes Kemenkes Malang in collaboration with the Malang Raya SAR Unit, aimed to strengthen volunteer capacity through the “Basic Health and Safety Training for SAR Teams” held on February 8–9, 2025. The training included theoretical sessions and practical simulations covering personal protective equipment (PPE) usage, self-care, nutrition, health incident reporting, and insurance literacy. A total of 88 participants, representing the Malang Raya Forum for Coordination of Search and Rescue Potentials (FKP3), completed pre- and post-tests as well as practical evaluations. The results showed a significant increase in participants’ knowledge (from a pre-test mean of 54.95 ± 8.22 to a post-test mean of 90.34 ± 5.69, p < 0.05), with improved consistency reflected in reduced standard deviation values. Observational data confirmed participants’ enhanced ability in PPE usage, health documentation, and hygiene practices under limited conditions. These findings highlight the effectiveness of integrating health promotion, preventive approaches, and practical simulations in volunteer training. Such interventions are vital to reducing health risks during rescue operations and ensuring safer humanitarian missions. This program may serve as a replicable model for similar community-based SAR training in other disaster-prone regions.

Abstract

Background: Smoking behavior is a habit that is still commonly found among adolescents, including students at SMPN 22 Malang City. Adolescents are in a phase of psychosocial development that is highly susceptible to environmental influences, such as peers, family, and social communities. Objectives: This study aims to investigate students' smoking behavior and the factors contributing to it, including perceptions, motivations, and school policies in addressing it.Methods: The study employs a qualitative method with a phenomenological approach, involving 30 informants comprising students, homeroom teachers, guidance counselors, student affairs teachers, and the school principal. Data were collected through in-depth interviews and observations. Results: The results of the study indicate that smoking behavior among students is influenced by three main factors: predisposing factors (students' good knowledge is not aligned with their attitudes toward smoking), enabling factors (easy access to cigarettes, lack of supervision, and limited health information about smoking), and reinforcing factors (social support from peers, smoking family members, and teenage lifestyle). Additionally, students' motivation to smoke is related to curiosity, emotional release, stress, and identity formation. Conclusion: The conclusion of this study indicates that smoking behavior is the result of a complex interaction between individual and social environmental factors. Therefore, a collaborative approach between schools, parents, and external agencies is needed through more stringent and targeted policies and education to reduce smoking rates among adolescents in schools.
