Abstract

As one of the branches of spirituality in Islam, Sufism emphasizes simplicity, wisdom, and harmony with nature. The Eco-Sufism movement is an approach that integrates Sufi spiritual values with environmental awareness. This study examines the significance of Sufism in environmental sustainability through a case study at the Kanzun Najah Islamic Boarding School, Batu Malang City. This Islamic boarding school has adopted Eco-Sufism-based practices, such as organic farming, utilization of renewable energy, and conservation of natural resources, all inspired by Sufism teachings. Through a qualitative approach, this study analyzes how Sufi teachings on the relationship between humans and nature are translated into concrete actions to support environmental sustainability. The results show that applying Sufi values in environmental management positively impacts the socio-ecological welfare of the Islamic boarding school community while inspiring similar movements in other areas. This study also proposes that Eco-Sufism can comprehensively solve global environmental challenges by strengthening the spiritual connection between humans and nature.

Abstract

This research examines the thoughts of Abu al-A'la al-Maududi and Ayatollah Khomeini on theodemocracy in the Islamic state through a comparative study. Using a qualitative approach and literature research method, this study analyzes their primary works, particularly al-Hukumah al-Islamiyah, along with relevant secondary sources. The findings show that despite coming from different madhhab backgrounds - Sunni and Shia - both figures share fundamental views on the unity of Islam and state, as well as criticism of the secular Western democratic system. However, significant differences exist in their interpretation of theodemocracy, especially regarding state leadership. Maududi developed al-Hakimiyah al-Ilahiyah emphasizing collective sovereignty of the ummah, while Khomeini's Wilayah al-Faqih places ulama as the highest authority. These differences reflect in their proposed state structures: Maududi advocated classical trias politica, while Khomeini developed a system with Faqih as supreme supervisor. This research reveals that successful implementation of Islamic state concepts depends not only on ideological strength but also on compatibility with local socio-cultural and political contexts, as evidenced in Pakistan and Iran's experiences.

Abstract

Islam Wasathiyah, a concept that emphasizes moderation and balance in the understanding and practice of Islam, has become an increasingly important religious discourse in the context of contemporary global geopolitics. This paper aims to explore the central role of al-Azhar University, Egypt's leading Islamic educational institution, in developing and promoting Islam Wasathiyah amidst complex socio-political dynamics. Using historical and analytical approaches, this paper examines the internal and external factors that drive the emergence of the concept of Islam Wasathiyah, and analyzes al-Azhar's involvement in political contestations in Egypt and the Islamic world in general. Furthermore, this paper outlines the strategies implemented by al-Azhar, especially under the leadership of Grand Sheikh Ahmed al-Tayeb, in campaigning for Islam Wasathiyah through various initiatives, such as international conferences, scientific publications, institutional cooperation, and religious diplomacy. By analyzing al-Azhar's role in facing the challenges of religious extremism and radicalism, this paper contributes to the discussion on the future of moderate Islam and the significance of religious institutions in shaping inclusive and peaceful Islamic discourse and practice. The findings of this study emphasize the importance of al-Azhar's role as a key actor in the global geopolitical landscape, as well as its potential in promoting a balanced and contextual understanding of Islam in facing contemporary challenges.

Abstract

This study investigates the practice, motivation, and meaning-making of grave pilgrimage (ziarah kubur), a prominent Indonesian religious tradition, among Indonesian university students in Cairo, Egypt. It aims to understand how this cultural practice is maintained, negotiated, and rationalized within a major center of Islamic scholarship. Employing a qualitative-dominant research design, this study analyzed survey narratives from 54 Indonesian students, supported by descriptive statistics. The findings reveal that grave pilgrimage is widespread, serving as a key mechanism for cultural identity preservation in a diaspora context. The motivations are identified as a dynamic interplay between personal spiritual needs, such as seeking tranquility and divine blessings (barakah), and the reinforcement of communal cultural sentiments. Crucially, the study uncovers a sophisticated process of 'religious rationalization,' whereby students utilize their formal religious education to re-frame the practice intellectually, shifting it from the category of local custom (adat) to a more universally justifiable act of worship (ibadah). This research concludes that for this cohort of future religious elites, grave pilgrimage is not a static tradition but a dynamic, adaptive strategy for negotiating their Indonesian and Muslim identities. The practice is intellectually reinforced, ensuring its continued relevance and vitality in a transnational context.

Abstract

The enactment of Indonesia's new National Criminal Code (KUHP) in 2026 marks a significant milestone in the nation's legal history, yet it raises profound constitutional questions regarding the protection of freedom of expression and civil rights. This article examines the constitutional implications of the new KUHP by analyzing the tension between constitutional guarantees under Articles 28E and 28F of the 1945 Constitution and the substantive provisions of the Criminal Code that regulate defamation, blasphemy, and public order offenses. Based on a comprehensive literature review of fifty relevant studies, this article finds that while the Constitutional Court has played a pivotal role in reviewing the constitutionality of various provisions—striking down articles on contempt against the president while upholding blasphemy laws—significant ambiguities persist. Vague statutory formulations lacking the lex certa principle enable selective prosecution and disproportionately affect religious minorities, dissenters, and critical voices. Press freedom remains fragile due to overlapping legal regimes between the Press Law, the KUHP, and the Electronic Information and Transactions (ITE) Law, compounded by the rise of Strategic Lawsuits Against Public Participation (SLAPPs). Comparative analysis reveals that Indonesia lags behind countries such as Canada and Ireland in establishing clear public interest defenses and precise standards for restricting speech. This article identifies critical research gaps, particularly concerning public interest defenses and mechanisms for protecting minority voices. It concludes that the constitutional implications of the new KUHP hinge on resolving statutory ambiguities, strengthening judicial interpretations that prioritize human rights, and developing robust safeguards against arbitrary enforcement. Without these measures, the new Criminal Code risks becoming an instrument that stifles the very freedoms the Constitution seeks to protect.
