Abstract

Backgrounds: Severe class II skeletal malocclusion could cause unfavorable facial appearance and impairments of mastication, swallowing, speaking, and breathing functions. Mouth breathing is one of the etiologies of malocclusion, caused by the narrowing of upper pharyngeal width. The aim of this study is to determine the upper pharyngeal width of class I and class II skeletal malocclusion. Materials and Methods: This study is an analytic observational method with cross sectional study design. Cephalogram samples are taken from patients of Trisakti University Dental Hospital in 2016-2017. The analysis is performed by measuring angles of SNA, SNB, ANB (class I, ANB: 2-4° and class II, ANB>4°), and upper pharyngeal width according to McNamara Analysis. Results: Average SNA angle is 8,40° (± 3,91), average SNB angle is 75,82° (± 3,62), average ANB angle is 4,58° (± 1,55), average upper pharyngeal width is 9,24 mm (± 2,20), average upper pharyngeal width of class I skeletal malocclusion group is 9,47 mm (± 2,37), and average upper pharyngeal width of class II skeletal malocclusion group is 9,01 mm (± 2,04). Conclusion: Average upper pharyngeal width of class I skeletal malocclusion is 9,47 mm (± 2,37) and average upper pharyngeal width of class II skeletal malocclusion is 9,01 mm (± 2,04).

Abstract

Background: Malocclusion occurs due to a change in dimensions from primary teeth to permanent teeth. The most common malocclusion in children aged 9-11 years is caused by the eruption of the canines and second premolars, requiring orthodontic treatment. To be able to determine the level of need for orthodontic treatment, an orthodontic index is needed, one of which is the Index Of Orthodontic Treatment Need (IOTN) and the Dental Aesthetic Index (DAI). The orthodontic clinic at RSGM-P FKG Trisakti University is a clinic that performs interceptive orthodontic treatment in the mixed dentition period. The aim of this study was to determine the correlation between the level of need for orthodontic treatment using the Index Of Orthodontic Treatment Need (IOTN) and the Dental Aesthetic Index (DAI) on patients aged 9-11 years at the orthodontic clinic of the RSGM-P FKG Trisakti University. Methods: The research method used was an analytic observational study with a cross-sectional study design. Results: The results of the research based on the results of the Spearman's rho correlation test, obtained a significance value of 0.905 (sig <0.05), the strength of the relationship of 0.023 means that the correlation is very weak between variables. Conclusion: So that it can be concluded that there is no significant relationship between the need for orthodontic treatment based on IOTN and DAI in patients aged 9-11 years at RSGM-P FKG Trisakti University.

Abstract

Skeletal malocclusion is caused by a disproportion of the maxilla and mandible, which leads to an unharmonious facial profile. Straight, convex, and concave soft tissue profiles may serve as a guide to determine the underlying skeletal relations and location of the jaws from the anteroposterior plane. In this study, Subtelny’s cephalometric analysis of the skeletal and soft tissue profile is used to evaluate the facial profile convexity and is divided into three parts, which are the skeletal profile convexity, soft tissue profile convexity, and total soft tissue profile convexity. The purpose of this study is to determine the degree of facial profile convexity according to Subtelny’s analysis in patients aged 6 to 12 years at Faculty of Dentistry Dental Hospital of Trisakti University. This was a descriptive observational study using samples of cephalograms of 40 patients aged 6 to 12 years. Cephalometry tracing and identification of anatomical landmarks were done to acquire the facial profile convexity degrees. The anatomical landmarks used were nasion, A-point, pogonion, soft tissue nasion, subnasale, pronasale, and soft tissue pogonion. The results of this study found that the average degree of the skeletal profile convexity was 171.26°, the soft tissue profile convexity was 166.18°, and the total soft tissue profile convexity was 144.83°. The degrees of skeletal profile convexity, soft tissue profile convexity, and total soft tissue profile convexity could be influenced by age, gender, and differences in growth and changes in the skeletal and facial soft tissue structures.

Abstract

Background: Treatment of bimaxillary dental protrusion accompanied crowding case generally involves the extraction of four first premolar to obtain the space required to correct crowding and retraction of the anterior teeth.  Additional anchorage is essential to prevent the posterior teeth from shifting during the correction process, ensuring that the space obtained from premolar extractions is fully utilized for anterior tooth retraction. Objective: This case report explain the treatment of a bimaxillary dental protrusion accompanied by severe dental crowding using additional anchorage. Case: The patient has a convex soft tissue profile, bimaxillary dental protrusion accompanied by severe crowding. The treatment included extracting all first premolars to create adequate space, followed by orthodontic repositioning of the anterior crowding in both arches. Supplementary anchorage was applied during the anterior retraction phase. After 20 months of treatment, the patient showed significant improvements in occlusion and aesthetics. Conclusion: To achieve appropriate space closure after extraction in accordance with the treatment plan, a correct strategy for controlling anchorage is required.
