Abstract

Existing research has emphasized the significance of cognitive factors in facilitating reading comprehension. Nevertheless, there is limited understanding of how affective factors contribute to this aspect of English learning, particularly within the Indonesian context. This study examines the contribution of affective factors (learning motivation, academic self-efficacy, and self-concept) to English reading comprehension among senior high school students. Adopting a correlational research design, it analyzed data from 136 eleventh graders using multiple regression analysis. The data was collected using the Reading Comprehension Test, Learning Motivation Scale, Academic Self-Efficacy Scale, and Self-Concept Scale. The analysis revealed a significant positive contribution of learning motivation to reading comprehension, accounting for approximately 8.9% of the variance (t-value of 3.626, p-value of 0.000), while academic self-efficacy explained about 4.4% (t-value of 2.484, p-value of 0.014). However, self-concept was found to have no significant effect on reading comprehension (t-value of -0.022, p-value of 0.982). Collectively, learning motivation and academic self-efficacy explicated around 11.9% of the variability in reading comprehension scores, as evidenced by an F-statistic of 9.021 and p-value of 0.000. The study concludes that affective factors are crucial in reading instruction. It suggests educators integrate strategies fostering motivation and self-efficacy to enhance reading comprehension.

Abstract

Learning outcomes are significantly and positively influenced by students’ interest in learning. This means that students will learn more effectively if they are more interested and satisfied with what they are learning. Unfortunately, the issue of students' lack of interest in learning English has not been thoroughly studied yet. Therefore, the aim of this study is to find out the aspects that cause students' lack of interest in English lessons. A survey design was used with tenth grade students of a high school in Malang, Indonesia, as the subjects, using 14 sets of items in the questionnaire as the research instrument to obtain the data. The data were verified through interviews to confirm their consistency with the questionnaire result. The data were analyzed and displayed using percentages. The findings show that, on average, from the teacher’s side, the students’ lack of interest in English lessons were mostly due to the teacher’s materials and methods of teaching and personal relationship with the students. From the students’ side, most of their lack of interest is due to their own unreadiness to learn English. These findings suggest that teachers should improve their teaching methods, materials, and student engagement strategies to enhance students’ interest in learning English and achieve better learning outcomes.

Abstract

The specific aim of this research is to recuperate Grammar Mastery (GM) in high school students who have difficulty distinguishing between gerunds and infinitives. Conventional learning methods often fail to teach effectively to students, necessitating the exploration of alternative learning approaches. This research examines the impact of Duolingo Gamification (DG) on students’ GM of gerunds and infinitives compared to conventional learning methods. A quasi-experimental research design was used, involving 42 students of Senior High School in Malang who were divided into an experimental group receiving the treatment using Duolingo and a control group having conventional learning based on textbook. Data were collected through pre-test and post-test to evaluate the enhancement of student’s grammar mastery. Statistical analysis including the Mann-Whitney U test revealed significant differences between the two groups of U = 40.500, p = 0.000. The experimental group obtained a higher mean post-test score (M = 81.66) than that of the control group (M = 45.71). The final results show that DG effectively recuperates GM of gerund and infinitives. Additionally, students show increased engagement and motivation when using Duolingo due to its interactive elements and direct feedback mechanisms.
