Abstract

Tourism development in many cases induces various socio-cultural consequences at the local community level. In Banyuwangi, local government commoditizes traditional rites of the Osing community for tourism purposes. Framed by Granovetter’s social embeddedness and Bentham’s utilitarianism, this study investigated the socio-cultural consequences of tourism development and portrayed how it influenced ethics in tourism activities of the Osing community. Following qualitative research with interviews and observation, the results suggested that Osing economic activities reflected cultural commodification. The cultural commodification expanded social networks in the relational and structural embeddedness that were operated by trust among the actors. While relational embeddedness was recognized on the personal relation, structural embeddedness was identified among government institutions, private sectors, Pokdarwis, and Osing community. Although the cultural commodification was identified, the ethical economic activities remained on collective values, or so called as collective utilitarianisms. The cultural commodification derived to widen social networks, yet the communal ethical economy remained the same. The study proposed community members to construct economic activities based on local values that were utilized to strengthen their socio-cultural identity. The study allowed better understanding of sociological consequences as undergirding framework in policy making and business cooperation.

Abstract

This study explores how farmers in Bulukerto Village, Batu City, rationally diversify their livelihoods amid an agricultural crisis and expanding tourism. It addresses three core questions; (1) how farmers respond to agrarian decline through diversification, (2) how unequal access, social capital, and agrarian identity influence their decisions, and (3) how theoretical synthesis explains this dynamic within structural constraints. The research combines James S. Coleman’s Rational Choice Theory, which highlights decisions based on material and non-material resources, cost-benefit logic, values, and social norms, with Henry Bernstein’s political economy approach, which emphasizes power structures, asset control, and class relations. To bridge these perspectives, the study also draws on the concepts of bounded rationality and embedded agency. A qualitative case study approach was used, focusing on farmers in Bulukerto Village, Bumiaji Subdistrict, Batu City. Data collection techniques included semi-structured interviews, non-participant observation, and document review. Thematic analysis identifies three diversification types: (1) capital-based, involving formal tourism ventures by farmers with financial or institutional access; (2) labor-based, such as driving or guiding, pursued by low-capital farmers through informal networks; and (3) informal household-scale strategies led by women or youth, often using digital platforms. This study concludes that sustainable rural diversification requires equitable access to productive resources, digital upskilling, and inclusive tourism programs that preserve agrarian identity. It offers a multi-level analytical lens that integrates agency, social structure, and local context in understanding livelihood transitions in post-agrarian rural areas. Policy recommendations call for transparent resource allocation in tourism, empowering farmer cooperatives for fair benefit-sharing, and promoting agritourism that balances traditional land use with new income streams.

Abstract

This study examines the pandek traditional work system in ornamental grass farming in Sukolilo Village, Wajak District, Malang Regency, as a form of social capital that supports the sustainability of farmer communities. Pandek is a traditional work pattern without formal contracts based on trust, norms of reciprocity, and kinship networks. The research uses a qualitative approach with an explanatory case study method, and is analyzed through Putnam's social capital theory, specifically the concepts of bonding and bridging capital. The results show that the pandek system helps farmers save up to 20% of production costs through efficiency based on social solidarity. Bonding capital is evident in the relationship between large farmers who share information and resources, while the relationship between farmers and pandek laborers forms a patron-client pattern as a form of bridging capital. This system supports sustainability in three key aspects: economic (efficiency and job stability), social (cohesion and equitable resource distribution), and ecological (chemical-free agricultural practices). However, this system harbors a paradox: sustainability is achieved through unequal labor relations and low labor wages. Therefore, policy innovation based on strengthening social capital is needed to create more equitable sustainability at the local level.

Abstract

The rapid conversion of agricultural land into tourism areas in Batu City has driven many farmers to shift into the tourism sector. However, some farmers rationally choose to remain in agriculture despite increasing pressures and attractions of tourism. This study examines the rationality behind farmers’ decisions to sustain farming and the strategies they adopt amid agrarian crisis and tourism expansion. Guided by James S. Coleman’s rational choice theory, the analysis emphasizes actors’ calculations of resources, risks, and values. A qualitative case study was conducted in Bulukerto Village, Bumiaji District, Batu City, using semi-structured interviews, non-participant observation, and document analysis. The findings show that farmers’ persistence is shaped by the availability of land and agricultural resources, strong socio-cultural attachments, and careful assessments of tourism’s uncertainties, which are often unstable and capital-intensive. Rather than abandoning farming, they adapt by diversifying to more resilient or profitable commodities, including oranges, vegetables, cut flowers, and multi-purpose tree species. The study concludes that sustaining agriculture constitutes a rational choice grounded in economic stability, ecological sustainability, and cultural identity. The novelty of this research lies in showing how farmers’ rationality is formed not only by material resources but also by non-material values and perceived risks of tourism, offering new insights into agrarian transformation.

Abstract

The smoked fish industry in Pasuruan Regency, particularly on the Nguling coast, faces challenges related to product quality and durability, which makes it less competitive in the broader market. The Asap Sejahtera Association, whose members are primarily women, still uses traditional smoking methods. The products produced are easily damaged and not uniform in color and taste. This condition limits the distribution of smoked fish products outside the region, reducing their competitiveness. The Doktor Mengabdi Program aims to enhance the quality and shelf life of smoked fish products using advanced technology, specifically a Mechanical Smoking Furnace equipped with the "Cabinet Smoke" System. This technology is expected to overcome problems such as case hardening and high water content, which often reduce product quality. In addition to technical improvements, this program offers training and mentoring in business management to female smokers, enabling them to better prepare for market dynamics and increase their family income. This initiative not only focuses on product quality but also on empowering women in the Pasuruan fisheries sector.
