Abstract

Interjection is the word used to show spontaneous expression. Batak language has a specific emotive interjection Bah! which is different from other interjections in the language. The objectives of this study are to find the meanings of interjection Bah! and to classify the elements of feelings of this interjection. This is a descriptive qualitative study employing the semantic explication method of the Natural Semantic Metalanguage approach. The data was collected from the interjection Bah! in a Batak Toba short story entitled Mangongkal Holi. The data were obtained by the attentive observation method and tapping technique. The methods used for data analysis were the distribution and contextual method. The results of this study showed that there are five meanings of the interjection Bah! They are astonishment, disappointment, confusion, surprise, and amazement. Meanwhile, those meanings express two elements of feelings, which are the positive feeling element (i.e. surprise and amazement), and the negative feeling element (i.e. astonishment, disappointment, and confusion). The revelation of the various meanings of Bah! is expected to provide richer understanding on its use in communication, and to further avoid miscommunication between different ethnics in Indonesia which each has their own mother tongue.

Abstract

Literature and tourism are intertwined in a reciprocal relationship, where many literary works draw inspiration from the world of tourism, and many tourist attractions are promoted in literary works. This article investigates the representation of Toba Batak cultures depicted in Sordam (2010), a novel by Suhunan Situmorang, and its relationship with promoting Toba tourist destinations. By employing qualitative approach, this study collects data from the novel and analyses them using the literary tourism approach and intertextuality theory. The results show that Sordam frames its narration through three main Toba Batak cultures: saur matua death ceremony, mangongkal holi tradition, and spirit summoning ritual. It is done so by inserting some intermingled stories to support its narrations, such as the story of Lake Toba occurrence from two perspectives, cultural materials, historical notes, myths, and magical realism. By creatively providing natural and cultural attractions of Toba Batak, Sordam persuades readers to travel through text and intertextuality. In this viewpoint, Sordam presents itself directly or indirectly as a medium for promoting Toba tourist destinations. Hence, by exploring readers' experiences traveling through text, this article strengthens the reciprocal relationship between literary works and the tourism world.

Abstract

North Sumatra literary works have represented Lake Toba tourism phenomena in the form of natural beauty, culture, and local wisdom. However, these works still need to get more attention from any researchers who link them to another way of promoting tourism. This study aims to analyze the four tourism components in Toba Dreams' novel and the role of the novel in developing Lake Toba's tourist destination. This study used a qualitative-interpretative method with a phenomenological paradigm. In obtaining the primary data, we used text, and in collecting the secondary data, we took from the library, observation, and interview methods. All primary data, i.e., attractions, amenities, access, and ancillary services, are analyzed using mimetic and literary tourism approaches by comparing them with secondary data acquisition. The results of this study show that the novel intensely and aesthetically depicts four tourism components, imitations of reality. The novelty of this study is that the Toba Dreams novel has a dual function as a medium for stories and as a promotion of Lake Toba tourism, especially tourist destinations in the

Abstract

This study examines the concept of women’s freedom in Toni Morrison's Sula, an important and relevant topic, particularly within the context of a patriarchal culture that continues to shape the lives of many women. The research focuses on the family and societal factors influencing women’s experiences. Employing a narrative qualitative methodology, the primary data is derived from Sula by Toni Morrison, supplemented by relevant literature from library research. The study applies feminist theory as proposed by Soenarjati Djajanegara, emphasizing the impact of family expectations and social conventions on individuals and their roles within society. The findings reveal that two key components shape women’s lives: family expectations and social conventions. Family expectations are often portrayed as burdens that restrict women’s freedom, while social conventions are the traditional norms, rules, and gender roles that govern how women are expected to behave, interact, and live. The analysis concludes that women need freedom to empower themselves and realize their potential. However, this freedom must not lead to self-destruction or harm to others, as such outcomes can result in women’s downfall.

Abstract

This study explores and analyzes the psychological struggles of retirees as portrayed in Ernest Hemingway's novel The Old Man and the Sea. The research uses a qualitative method with a psychosocial theory approach. The data are collected through comprehensive reading and identifying relevant narrative, dialogue, and symbolic elements. The data are analyzed using Miles and Huberman’s method, which includes data collection, data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing. The novel is viewed as a reflection of various psychological struggles, such as identity crisis, fear of uselessness, and loneliness. The results show that identity crisis is represented through Santiago’s self-doubt after failing to catch fish for many days. He feels that he is no longer the great fisherman he once was. The fear of uselessness is shown through his physical weakness and the fact that he is no longer as strong as he was in his youth. Nevertheless, he continues to fight hard to prove that he is still useful and that his life still has meaning. Loneliness is illustrated by his solitary life: no wife, no children, and no close friends. In conclusion, the author wants to convey that people do not need to run away from the reality of growing old. Instead, they should accept it wholeheartedly and continue to live their old age with enthusiasm, meaning, and happiness.

Abstract

This community service activity was carried out as part of the 41st Anniversary of the Catholic University of Santo Thomas Medan under the theme “Clean City Movement of Medan: Strengthening Collaboration to Realize Indonesia Emas 2045.” The primary objective of this program was to foster environmental awareness and strengthen synergy among universities, local communities, and regional governments in maintaining urban cleanliness and environmental sustainability. The implementation employed a participatory approach involving UNIKA’s academic community, local residents, and key stakeholders across seven districts in Medan City. The stages of activity included socialization, environmental clean-up actions, and post-activity evaluation.
