Abstract

Mental disorders such as stress are problems that often occur in people of productive age. This can happen because at this time there is an increase in ability and the need to do various things that happen in the surrounding environment. Stress can have a negative impact on a person's health and well-being, for example related to neurological disorders that often occur, namely primary headaches. This study aims to determine the relationship between stress levels and the incidence of primary headaches in Physiotherapy undergraduate students at the Faculty of Nursing, Hasanuddin University. The sampling technique in this study was purposive sampling through a cross sectional approach. The number of samples in this study were 152 active undergraduate students of Physiotherapy, Faculty of Nursing, Hasanuddin University. Student stress levels were measured using the Depression Anxiety Stress Scale 42, while primary headaches used the Headache Intake Questionnaire, Cleveland Clinic Canada. In this study, the results showed that 36.8% of students did not experience stress and the other 63.2% experienced stress at different levels from mild to very severe. Furthermore, as much as 75,7% of the total respondents experienced primary headaches with the most frequent type of tension type headache. In this study the correlation test used was the Chi Square test and a p-value of 0.021 (p <0.05) was obtained, which means that there is a relationship between stress levels and the incidence of primary headaches in Physiotherapy undergraduate students at the Faculty of Nursing, Hasanuddin University. Abstract

Endothelial dysfunction is experienced in hemodialysis patients, characterized by stiffness in the blood vessel walls resulting in decreased peripheral blood flow. The research objective was to determine the effect of immersion in CO2 water on peripheral blood flow changes. Experimental design with 30 patients divided into two groups; 18 patients immersed their feet in CO2 water (1,300 ppm) at 37-38°C and 12 patients were immersed in fresh water at 36-37°C performed 2-3 times per week for four weeks, measurement of peripheral blood flow using Laser Doppler Flowmetry on day 1 and 28. Peripheral blood flow from the CO2 water immersion group decreased from 12,443 mL/minute to 11,677 mL/minute (decreased by 0.766 mL/minute), while the freshwater immersion group decreased from 8,471 mL/minute to 6,776 mL/minute (decreased by 1,695 mL/min). Immersion in CO2 water tends to reduce peripheral blood flow inhibition more than immersion in fresh water in hemodialysis patients.

Abstract

Aging is a natural process in the human life cycle. The increase in life expectancy has a positive impact on quality of life, but it also brings various consequences, one of which is the decline in physical and cognitive functions. As they age, the elderly become more susceptible to musculoskeletal disorders, which in turn increase the risk of falling. This community service activity aimed to enhance the understanding and awareness of the elderly regarding the importance of preventing falls and musculoskeletal disorders through ergonomic education and posture screening. The activity, themed "Ergonomics for Elderly Safety," was organized by the Physiotherapy Study Program, Faculty of Nursing, Hasanuddin University, on December 15, 2023, at the Tamalanrea Health Center, involving 30 elderly participants from the Prolanis program. The series of events included ergonomic counseling, demonstrations of ergonomic exercises, and posture screening using the Functional Reach Test and the Apley Scratch Test. The results of the Functional Reach Test showed an average reach of 26,88 cm, indicating a low risk of falling. Meanwhile, the Apley Scratch Test results revealed an average reach of 9,82 cm for the right arm and 16,95 cm for the left arm, reflecting the presence of musculoskeletal disorders, particularly in the left upper extremity. These findings highlight the importance of continuing ergonomic education and posture screening programs as part of preventive efforts to reduce the risk of falls and musculoskeletal disorders in the elderly.

Abstract

The increasing reliance on digital devices has led to a behavioral shift toward a sedentary lifestyle, resulting in decreased physical activity and reduced physical fitness among adolescents. This study aims to compare physical activity levels and lung capacity between adolescents who participate in sports extracurricular activities and those who do not, as well as to explore the relationship between these two variables. A descriptive analytic design with a cross-sectional approach was used, involving 186 junior high school students divided into sports and non-sports groups. Physical activity was assessed using the Metabolic Equivalent of Task (MET) through the International Physical Activity Questionnaire–Short Form (IPAQ-SF), while lung capacity was measured using Peak Expiratory Flow Rate (PEFR). The results showed that the sports group had a significantly higher average MET of 4312.96 ± 1650.99 MET-minutes/week and a PEFR of 560.75 ± 89.17 L/min compared to the non-sports group (MET: 1066.15 ± 1202.54; PEFR: 440.00 ± 80.27; p < 0.05). Correlation tests revealed a significant positive relationship between MET and PEFR in both the sports group (r = 0.419; p = 0.000) and the non-sports group (r = 0.292; p = 0.004). These findings suggest that structured physical activity plays an important role in improving respiratory capacity in adolescents and may serve as a promotive and preventive strategy within school-based physiotherapy programs.
