Abstract

This study examines the availability and accessibility of livelihood assets of oil palm independent smallholders in Terawas Village, Musi Rawas Regency. Indonesia as a major producer of palm oil faces challenges in increasing the productivity of independent smallholders who are often hampered by limited capital, technology and education. The method used was descriptive qualitative with data collection through surveys and interviews. Results show that although smallholders have adequate land ownership and education levels, they still experience difficulties in accessing financial and social assets. Analysis using the Sustainable Livelihood Framework identified five livelihood assets: human, natural, financial, physical and social. The findings highlight the need for empowerment strategies that focus on improving access to capital and technology, as well as developing farmers' skills. This research is expected to serve as a basis for policies and programs that are more suited to local needs, in order to improve the sustainability of oil palm farming in the area.

Abstract

This study examines the financial feasibility of different replanting patterns for oil palm plasma and assesses farmers’ concerns regarding replanting decisions. The research was conducted in three districts of South Sumatra (OKI, Muara Enim, and Musi Banyuasin) with plasma farmers as respondents. Three financing patterns were  analyzed: self-financing through savings, insurance-based financing, and bank loans. The research used a survey method and sampling was determined with a balanced random sampling technique with 90 respondents. The research concluded that the financing pattern of oil palm replanting can be done through savings, insurance, and bank loans. The best financing pattern for replanting is conducted by using their savings because it can produce the highest net B/C value; NPV; and the shortest payback period. Sensitivity analysis showed that Fresh Fruit Bunch (FFB) price reduction is the most sensitive for the financing patterns of their savings and bank loans, however for the financing patterns of insurance, the decrease in FFB production is mentioned as the most sensitive. The government has to maintain stable FFB pricing, and it is advised that they use their funds, which are arranged by KUD, to support the oil palm replanting. Five factors -complexity, compatibility, relative profitability, trialability, and observability - will be used to gauge farmers’ concerns about oil palm replanting.

Abstract

ABSTRACT Rice farming income is strongly influenced by agricultural yields, which depend on the quality and access to wetlands. Disparities in farmer income are caused by differences in wetland typology conditions, such as tidal and non-tidal, or lebak, which directly affect the ability of farming households to purchase and consume food. This study was conducted to examine rice farming income in wetland typology in Palembang City. This study was conducted in Karya Jaya Village and Keramasan Village, Kertapati District, Palembang City, South Sumatra Province. The data collected were from 2024. The research method used was the survey method. The total sample in this study was 138 people. The results of the study concluded that the average total income of rice farming households in Palembang City was Rp73,247,070.23 per year. The largest component came from the non-farming sector at 83.61%, followed by rice farming at 9.11% and non-rice farming at 7.28%. This indicates that most farmers rely on non-agricultural sectors for their primary income, not agricultural activities. Therefore, non-farm activities play a significant role in supporting the household economy. Keywords: Non-farm income, Rice farming income, Wetland typology.

Abstract

The existence of agricultural land is indirectly related to the environment. The existence of agricultural land in terms of environmental aspects can provide five types of benefits, namely preventing flooding, controlling water balance, preventing erosion, and reducing environmental pollution from household waste. This research aims to analyze environmental changes in the conversion of agricultural land to non-agricultural activities in Palembang City. This research uses quantitative methods, analytical quantitative research is conducted to accept or reject hypotheses that are described by significance values. The research also used qualitative methods by conducting measured interviews with 250 respondents. The research was conducted in May 2023 in three sub-districts in Palembang City, namely Kalidoni, Kertapati, and Gandus sub-districts. The environmental indicators used as a reference include water quality, air quality, soil conditions, traffic conditions, runoff water conditions, plant conditions, and animal conditions. The results showed that the condition of plant environmental quality in the Gandus and Kalidoni sub-districts is classified as poor, while the Kertapati sub-district is in the good category. While the condition of the environmental quality of animal indicators in the Kertapati and Kalidoni sub-districts is in the good enough category, but in the Gandus sub-district it is in the bad category. Dragonfly populations will be high if the habitat conditions are very suitable. This means that there are still streams or puddles that are still clean and food is available. This clean water is the place for dragonfly eggs and images for further development. So if the dragonfly population at a location is still high, it means that the water conditions at that location are still not polluted.

Abstract

Land conversion is an activity that changes the land area and also its function into a new area and has another function and has an impact on environmental problems and land potential. The impact of land conversion is the loss of rice fields and causes rice production to decline. Therefore, it is very relevant to analyze the policy strategy of agricultural land conversion to support the control of agricultural land conversion in Palembang City. This research was conducted in Palembang City in 2023 using survey method, with purposive sampling of 23 key informants. SWOT analysis (Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, Threats) was used to answer this research. The results showed aggressive strategies that can be applied to control the conversion of lebak swamp land in Palembang City, namely, maintaining the level of rice productivity along with high demand, accelerating the preparation of Regional Regulations related to Sustainable Food Agricultural Land (LP2B), improving the performance of agricultural extension institutions to supervise and provide counseling, increasing the competitiveness of farmers given the existing potential and creating innovations with superior agricultural product centers in local business development-based areas.
