Abstract

Lignin degradation from sago (Metroxylon sagu Rottb.) waste has been carried out using a TiO2 catalyst. This research aims to determine the effectiveness of lignin degradation from sago waste using a TiO2 catalyst. Lignin from sago pulp was isolated using 10% NaOH and characterized using Fourier Transform Infra Red (FTIR) spectroscopy. The results of the characterization using FTIR show that the absorption at wave number 2937.59 cm-1 is the -C-H stretching vibration of the alkane functional groups, the absorption at wave number 2360.87 cm-1 is the vibration of the C≡C triple bond, the wave numbers 1795.73 cm-1 and 1637.56 cm-1 are associated with the stretching of the carbonyl group. The absorption at wave number 1427.32 cm-1 is a C-H vibration connected to an unsaturated bond in an aromatic ring. Absorptions at wave number 1105.21 cm-1, 1128.36 cm-1, 1153.43 cm-1 were the stretching vibration of -C-H on the guaiasil ring, and the absorption at wave number 1022.27 cm-1 was the stretching vibration of C-O-C ether. From this spectrum, it can be seen that lignin is not completely pure because it is probably still mixed with cellulose. The results of the effectiveness test of lignin degradation using a TiO2 catalyst with the help of UV light were able to degrade the lignin isolated by 31.43%, for 3 hours at a lignin concentration of 40 ppm.

Abstract

Methyl ester sulfonate derived from mahogany (Swietenia macrophylla K.) oil has been characterized. The research began by synthesizing mahogany methyl ester (ME) in 4 stages: pressing, degumming, esterification, and transesterification. The next process was synthesizing methyl ester sulfonate (MES) also in four stages: sulfonation, bleaching, neutralization, and drying. The reactant for MES synthesis in this study was H2SO4 with a mole ratio of 1:6 and variations in the concentration of H2SO4 (70%, 75%, 80%, 85%, and 90%) as well as variations in the duration of sulfonation (45, 60, 75, 70, and 105 minutes) to determine the characteristics of the synthesized MES including density, acid number, and emulsion stability. The effect of the combination of treatment variations was analyzed using the two-way ANOVA test and the least significant difference (LSD) test. This research showed that MES from mahogany seed oil from a combination of variations in treatment has a density ranging from 0.91 to 0.97 g/mL where the LSD test at α = 0.05 produces three different MES density groups due to variations in the concentration of H2SO4 namely A (70 % and 75%), B (80% and 85%), and C (90%). The resulting MES acid numbers ranged from 4.69 ‒ 17.74 mgKOH/g sample with three different groups of MES acid numbers due to variations in the concentration of H2SO4, namely A (85 and 90%), B (75% and 80%), and C (70%). The stability of mahogany oil-based MES emulsion ranged from 0.000 ‒ 0.975 and two different MES emulsion stability groups were obtained due to variations in the concentration of H2SO4, namely A (80% and 85%) and B (70%, 75%, and 90%). FTIR spectrophotometer showed the presence of S=O groups at wavenumber 1172 cm-1 and S‒O groups at wavenumbers 972.12 cm-1 and 879.54 cm-1 proved that MES was successfully synthesized.

Abstract

Foodborne bacteria cause food spoilage, usually Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli. Thus, synthetic preservatives are employed in food preservation to prevent food spoilage caused by microorganisms. Excessive use of synthetic preservatives can cause disease. Bio-oil has become a natural preservative because of its high phenolic content. However, bio-oil still requires purification because the initial bio-oil (grade 3) still contains carcinogenic compounds that are dangerous for consumption. Therefore, this study aims to determine the components of the bio-oil compound after purification and its effectiveness as an antibacterial. Durian shell (DS) is pyrolyzed in a heating reactor without oxygen at a temperature of 330–600ºC (flow rate 6ºC/minute) with a 2-3 cm material size. Furthermore, bio-oil purification includes stages of filtration using activated zeolite, fractional distillation at 70–200ºC (grade 2), and filtration using activated charcoal (grade 1). Bio-oil purification includes stages of filtration using active zeolite and activated charcoal (grade 2), and fractional distillation at a temperature of 150–200ºC (grade 1). Based on Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry (GC-MS) analysis, grade 2 and grade 1 contain the major compounds 1,4-dimethyl-1h-imidazole and acetic acid. The research showed that bio-oil grades 1 and 2, when used at a 30% concentration, exhibit antibacterial strong effects against Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli. These findings suggest that bio-oil grades 1 and 2 could be valuable natural preservatives.
