Abstract

This article shows how business people and consumers understand and practice the halal concept. The concept of halal, understood only based on the narrative of the Qur’an and hadith, turns out to be more complex at the practical level because it involves market behavior and contains elements of religious politicization. Using a living tradition approach, this qualitative research reveals the reciprocal relationship between religious texts and community practices, social context, and performative actions by halal business actors in the districts of Semarang and Salatiga City, Indonesia. The results show that 1) halal business behaviors are a form of embodiment of Muslim business people's interpretation of the essence of the teachings of the Qur’an and hadith, which are understood textually on business platforms. 2) This halal business movement emerged as a response to (a) global market trends which are starting to target consumers who are experiencing increased religiosity and spirituality, (b) modern capitalism, which is starting to touch religious areas, starting from production, business systems, to marketing, and 3) political developments global economy that makes halal a business commodity. Thus, the theoretical contribution of this paper is that the concept of halal cannot be defined only based on the interpretation of the Qur’an or the interpretation of hadith but is closely related to traditional practices in the field, which involve market behavior and trade politics.

Abstract

This article explores the comparative authority of Āsim b. Bahdalah al-Kufi in the realms of Qur’anic recitation and hadith studies. Āsim, who lived in the second century AH (128 A.H.), held a significant position in the field of qira’at, boasting a substantial following, including in Indonesia. His narration of the qira’at was widely recognized for its high degree of authenticity and reliability. However, when it came to the domain of hadith studies, his authority faced negative evaluations (majruh) from critics in this field. This study adopts a critical historical approach to scrutinize the disparities in Āsim b. Bahdalah’s authority between Qur’anic qira’at and Hadith studies. The findings of this investigation reveal that these discrepancies in authority were closely linked to political factors associated with the ‘Abbasid dynasty. Abu ‘Ali Muhammad b. ‘Ali b. Muqlah al-Shirazi, a prominent Minister in Baghdad during the Abbasid era, played a pivotal role in shaping the views of Ibn Mujahid and influencing the content of his work. Ibn Mujahid opted to document the name of Āsim b. Bahdalah over Abu Muhammad Ya’qub b. Ishaq al-Hadrami al-Basri, who was deemed disloyal to the Abbasid rulers. The political pressure exerted by the Abbasid rulers appears to have played a crucial role in his decision-making process. In fact, the Abbasid rulers went to great lengths, even compelling scholars who disagreed with Ibn Mujahid’s views to retract their positions and issue apologies for their dissent. Some scholars were subjected to imprisonment as a consequence of their refusal to align with the official viewpoint. This comparison underscores how politics had the capacity to wield substantial influence over the assessment of intellectual authority across various fields of knowledge in historical contexts.

Abstract

This paper discusses the contestation of women's public leadership discourse among feminist activists in Indonesia and Malaysia and how the reproduction of fiqh on women's public leadership in both countries takes place. This research is a field study with data collection through interviews and direct interaction with women activists in both countries and documenting their works. Using the Islamic activism approach, it was found that: 1) The issue of women leaders in Indonesia and Malaysia is complex. Women are often held back by culture, religion and politics. Muslim feminist groups face resistance from conservative groups when they try to challenge gender inequality. Furthermore, some sharia law make it harder for women to get legal protection and justice. More legal rights and support for women are therefore required to make politics more equal. 2) Feminist activists in Indonesia and Malaysia have reinterpreted Islamic texts to promote gender equality. They offer gender-responsive interpretation of the Qur'an and Hadith deemed to be fairer while supporting support social justice and gender equality. 3) The fiqh product of leadership concludes that the moral ideal in the Qur'an and hadith is for leaders to be competent (qawwām). People who fit this profile are well-suited to lead, particularly in a country that adheres to democratic principles.

Abstract

Mahdism, or the belief in the resurrection of the eschatological figure of the Mahdi remains important in Islam today. This belief, legitimated by the mahdawiyyah hadith, has allowed many individuals throughout Islamic histories to claim themselves to be the Mahdi, as well as to carry out a radical strand of Islamic movement in order to support their claim. Using a historical method, this paper studies the history and development of mahdism, along with their interpretationof the mahdawiyah hadith; and analyzes the connection of such interpretation with the rise of religious radicalism. The study argues, mahdism is linked to the practices of millenarianism, formerly existed in Jewish and Christian theology. The emergence of mahdism related to the political conflict during the power transition from the Umayyad to the Abbasid dynasty. Yet, the rise of the Mahdi movement found its support from the mahdawiyyah Hadith, which are interpreted in such a way as to legitimize the radical-subversive movement of the mahdi’s leaders, enabling mahdism to develop, ideologically, as a radical movement. This study concludes that mahdism is at once a religious and political movement aiming to bring back the glory of Islam. Religion becomes a legitimate and effective ideological framework of a political mission.

Abstract

This study explores the integration of Imam Az-Zarnuji’s educational principles from Ta’lim al-Muta’allim in shaping the growth mindset of female students at Madrasah Diniyah Putri TBS Kudus. Specifically, it investigates how key principles such as sincere intention (niyyah), respect for teachers, patience, perseverance, and discipline contribute to fostering a growth mindset characterized by resilience, openness to failure, and continuous self-improvement. Employing a qualitative descriptive design, data were collected through in-depth interviews, direct observations, and document analysis involving two teachers and fifteen students. Thematic analysis was used to identify patterns related to the application of Az-Zarnuji’s principles in students’ learning behavior and mindset development. The findings reveal that these classical Islamic educational values significantly reinforce modern psychological traits associated with the growth mindset, such as perseverance in learning, intrinsic motivation, and receptivity to feedback. The study offers concrete implications for Islamic education practice by demonstrating how integrating traditional pedagogical ethics with contemporary mindset theory can enhance students’ character formation and academic resilience. This integrative model presents a contextualized, holistic approach to developing growth-oriented learners in madrasah settings.

Abstract

This article aims to explain Karl Popper's epistemology of falsificationism and its relevance to Islamic scholarly discourse, particularly regarding the dialectics of inheritance distribution in Islam. The study is a library research employing a qualitative approach, using Karl Popper's works and related literature as primary data sources. The analysis is conducted inductively and comparatively to examine the relevance of falsificationism within the discourse on Islamic inheritance laws. The falsificatory approach encourages openness to criticism and reinterpretation in understanding inheritance provisions in Islam. Although the Qur'anic texts are explicit, social changes demand a more contextual and just reading. Thinkers such as Muhammad Syahrur, Amina Wadud, and Asma Barlas offer progressive reinterpretations. While their perspectives differ significantly from classical scholars, they emphasize that their interpretations remain grounded in the objectives of Islamic law (maqāṣid al-sharī‘ah). This approach helps prevent intellectual stagnation without disregarding the authority of sacred texts.

Abstract

This paper discusses the discourse of interpretation of the Qur'an and misogynistic hadith by feminist activists in Indonesia and Malaysia as a strategy in promoting feminism in their respective countries. For this reason, the discussion focuses on interpretation methods, production of feminist interpretations, and dissemination of feminist interpretation. The study is qualitative research in which data is taken through interviews, observations, and documentation. The results of the study show that 1) The interpretation of the Qur'anic texts and hadith is done by seeing them as open and constantly developing texts. It means that texts could respond  and  interact with modern knowledge such as gender, law, and human rights. 2) The feminist approach to the Qur'an and hadith involves misogynistic challenges including marginalization, stereotypes, subordination, and violence against women. It also looks at the multiple roles of women and their subordination 3) Feminist interpretation is socialized by feminist activists from Islamic boarding schools and university backgrounds. They took part in discussions and wrote about feminism in magazines and social media. They also participate in women's organizations that advocate women protection and campaign for women's rights including the hazards of polygamy. This study shows that power relations within organizations have a significant impact on the interpretation of religious texts. This interpretation was then used to motivate women activists to promote feminism.
