Abstract

The increased beef cattle production at traditional farms is a strategy to achieve meat self-sufficiency in 2026. This is accomplished through various parties, including the government, academics, researchers, the private sector, and farmers as the main actors. Therefore, this study aimed to determine and analyze criteria, performance criteria, strategies, and alternatives for sustainable beef cattle production in traditional farms based on the opinion of experts. The research location was School for Smallholder Community (SPR) Maju Bersama, Sungai Lilin Sub-District, Musi Banyuasin Regency, South Sumatra Province, Indonesia. Primary data were collected through FGD (focus group discussion) and interview with expert stakeholders, including farmers, policymakers, entrepreneurs, academics, and research analyst. They were analyzed using the Analytical Hierarchy Process (AHP) with R studio version 4.1.2. The result showed that Musi Banyuasin Regency has a natural resource potential for supporting beef cattle production with an institutional collaborative strategy. The interaction between the production factors showed that the feeding criteria were at the highest level, with 32.05%. Considering the performance criteria, business sustainability was essential at 35.70% and should be achieved by adopting a corporate strategy of 85.52%, implemented through alternative business management at 61.40%.

Abstract

Katuk (Sauropus androgynus), a traditional herb that has been traditionally consumed by breastfeeding mothers to increase their milk production but still has some side effects, such as bronchiolitis obliterans and inhibition of calcium absorbtion. Removing the polar compounds in katuk leaf (depolarized katuk leaf) can eliminate those side effects without eliminating its side effect in increasing milk production and body growth in several production animals. This study was aimed to analyze the physiological status of beef cows consuming diet supplemented with depolarized katuk leaf as feed additive by measuring their hematology and blood mineral profile. Nine Brahman cross cows in the finisher stage, were grouped based on their diet: complete feed (control), complete feed plus depolarized katuk leaf powder (P1; 100 g per day), and complete feed plus depolarized katuk leaf pellet (P2; 100 g per day). Blood sample was collected after six weeks of consumption for analysis of hematological profiles including total erythrocytes, hematocrit, hemoglobin, total leukocytes, stress index (neutrophil-lymphocyte ratio); and blood mineral concentration (calcium and phosphorous). Dietary administration of depolarized katuk leaf did not have any statistically significant effect on all hematology parameters and blood mineral profiles. In conclusion, depolarized katuk leaf can be used as a growth promoter in beef cows without any negative effect on their physiological status. Abstract

Standardization of the quality of the depolarized katuk pellet production process as a feed additive is very important to maintain product quality. The production process requires dry katuk leaves (DKK) as raw materials which are then processed into depolarized katuk leaves (DKD), and continues in the pelleting process to become depolarized katuk pellets (PKD). Quality standard can be done by measuring the parameters of nutritional value and also the yield of methanol extract. Nutritional values were obtained from the results of proximate analysis, namely the percentage of dry matter, ash content, crude protein, crude fiber, crude fat, beta-N, calcium, phosphorus, and gross energy (Cal/g). Mean while, the yield of methanol extract was obtained by maceration using methanol solvent. This study aims to evaluate the nutritional value and yield of crude methanol extract of katuk leaves (DKK, DKD, PKD) which can be used as a quality assurance standard for the depolarized katuk pellet production process. In general, the nutritional value of DKD and PKD had the same value as that of DKK, except for calcium which was quite high (P<0.05) in DKD and PKD, and the percentage of crude fiber was lower (P<0.05) in PKD compared to DKK and DKD. The percentage of crude fat in pellets (PKD) was higher (P<0.05) when compared to DKK and DKD. The yield of methanol extract was very high (P<0.05) in DKK, compared to DKD and PKD. The nutritional parameters and the yield of the katuk leaf extract can be used as quality assurance standards for the depolarized katuk pellet production process. Abstract

Enhancing the productivity and quality of Balinese cattle is a crucial goal for improving livestock management practices in Indonesia. Traditional evaluation methods used by farmers are often subjective and inconsistent, leading to inaccuracies in cattle classification and limiting the effectiveness of breeding and selection processes. To address these challenges, this study proposes a Fuzzy Inference System with Certainty Factor (FIS-CF) to improve cattle classification by providing more objective and reliable grading criteria. The model utilizes key physical parameters, including shoulder height, body length, and chest circumference, as input features to categorize cattle into three quality classes. A diverse dataset was collected from the People's Animal Husbandry School (SPR) and various farms across Indonesia to evaluate the model's performance. The FIS-CF model achieved a classification accuracy of 95.93% and a balanced accuracy of 96.20%, outperforming traditional methods that rely on subjective assessment. These results demonstrate that the proposed model provides a consistent, scalable, and data-driven solution for livestock classification, helping farmers make more informed decisions in cattle selection and breeding. Additionally, the model addresses key limitations of current practices by reducing reliance on manual evaluations, which often vary between assessors. The findings highlight the potential for wider adoption of the FIS-CF model across the livestock sector to improve productivity and streamline herd management processes. Future research will aim to refine the model further by incorporating additional parameters, such as age and weight, and expanding its validation to larger datasets covering different cattle breeds and farming environments to ensure broader applicability in sustainable livestock management.

Abstract

Fedtugrow® is a complete feed containing depolarized katuk (Sauropus androgynous) leaves and is beneficial for enhancing the productivity of both dairy and beef cattle. Depolarization technology in katuk leaves involves the removal of polar compounds from the leaf to eliminate the potential side effects resulting from katuk consumption, such as bronchiolitis obliterans and inhibition of calcium absorption. This technology could eliminate side effects without compromising the efficacy of katuk leaves in increasing milk production and body weight gain. This study aimed to evaluate the efficacy of Fedtugrow® in promoting the growth of beef cattle and its impact on the health status of the cattle raised on smallholder local farms with distinct characteristics compared to commercial farms. Ten Limousin male cattle entering the fattening phase were divided into a control group that consumed standard concentrate and a treatment group that consumed Fedtugrow® for three months. Blood was collected at the end of treatment for hematological analysis, including erythrocyte and leukocyte profiles. Cows consuming Fedtugrow® showed a significantly higher average daily gain and lower stress index than the control. Furthermore, no significant differences were observed in the hematological profile, such as total erythrocyte count, hemoglobin level, hematocrit, and total leukocytes. This study showed the ability of Fedtugrow® as a growth promoter without negatively affecting the physiological status of beef cattle raised on smallholder farms. Abstract

This study included 21 recently calved FH cows divided into three treatment groups: control (P0), depolarized katuk (Sauropus androgynus) leaf powder (P1), and depolarized katuk leaf pellet (P2). The study found that the dry matter intake for treatment P0, P1, and P2 were 15.59 ± 0.91 kg, 15.14 ± 1.38 kg, and 16.27 ± 1.28 kg, respectively. Milk production in these three different treatments were 25.91±5.94 L, 23.80±3.42 L, and 32.11±4.75 L, respectively. The dry matter percentage of milk (total solid) in P0 was 21.75±11.67%, P1 was 21.7±0.99%, and P2 was 31.0±10.75%. Depolarized katuk leaves, particularly in pellet form, resulted in much higher milk production than the control group. These data suggest that feeding depolarized katuk leaves as a supplementary feed to FH dairy cows can improve milk supply and quality during the first month of lactation. The inclusion of depolarized katuk leaves, particularly in pellet form, may be a useful technique for increasing dairy cattle productivity and health. Abstract

Manual morphometric measurement of livestock is time-consuming, stressful to animals, and poses safety risks to handlers. This study presents a computer vision-based system for automatically measuring three key morphometric parameters of Bali cattle—withers height (WH), body length (BL), and chest girth (CG)—in accordance with the Indonesian National Standard (SNI). Images were captured from side and rear perspectives and processed using threshold-based image segmentation in the HSV color space to isolate the cattle contour. Pixel-to-centimeter calibration was performed using a fixed reference marker placed at a known distance of 1.5–2.0 m from the camera. The extracted morphometric values were subsequently fed into a Fuzzy Inference System with Certainty Factor (FIS-CF) for cattle grading and classification. Threshold values ranging from 0.5 to 0.9 were evaluated against manual ground-truth measurements using MAE, RMSE, MAPE, and R². The optimal threshold of 0.9 achieved MAPE values of 9.85% (WH), 6.04% (BL), and 11.49% (CG), representing up to 52% improvement over the lowest threshold. Although R² values remain negative due to limited sample size and non-linear pixel-to-metric variance, a consistent upward trend toward zero confirms measurement improvement with higher thresholds. The proposed method offers a practical, non-invasive alternative to manual measurement, with potential application in precision livestock farming and automated cattle grading systems.

Abstract

Abstract. Jakaria, Ulum MF, Lestari D, Akwila S, Sihite DEWT, Priyanto R, Muladno, Sumantri C. 2020. Investigating new SNPs of CAST, CAPN and SCD genes in 5’UTR of Bali cattle. Biodiversitas 21: 2971-2976. The present investigation aims to explore specific SNPs of Bali cattle, focusing mainly on CAST, CAPN, and SCD genes in 5'UTR. DNA of Bali cattle (25 individuals) from Breeding Centre of Bali cattle in Bali Province, Indonesia, were extracted according to the protocol of GenAID. Amplification of the CAST, CAPN, and SCD genes were designed using the Primer3 program based on reference sequences (access numbers AH014526.2, AH009246.3, and AY241932). Furthermore, the PCR product was sequenced through forward primer sequencing. The data sequence results were analyzed using the Bioedit, MEGA7, Popgen 3.2, and DnaSP6 V6 programs. The results showed that SNPs were detected at g.921C>T and g.922T>G in 5'UTR for the CAST gene between the reference of GenBank AH014526.2 and Bali cattle, but it was monomorphic within the population. The high polymorphism of SNPs was found in g.232G>T for the CAPN gene and g.134A>del for the SCD gene. However, the SNP g.246C>del SCD gene was detected as monomorphic in this region. Moreover, this result shows that low nucleotide diversities (Pi) for CAST, CAPN, and SCD genes in 5'UTR of Bali cattle were 0.00422, 0.00632, and 0.00449, respectively. This finding was important for developing marker-assisted selection (MAS) to improve the meat quality of Bali cattle.
