Abstract

Developing Bali cattle population in Timor Island, East Nusa Tenggara province carries a potential issue regarding cattle population. The objective of this research was to conduct an analysis and projection of the development of Bali cattle population in the agricultural ecosystem in Timor Island using system dynamics. The research was conducted from January to September 2018. The research location was determined purposively based on the characteristics of the agricultural ecosystem located in Kupang Regency and Kupang City. The research used 60 Bali cattle and involved 102 rancher respondents. Interviews and field observations were conducted to obtain primary and secondary data. Data analysis was done by building a system dynamics using Powersim and interpreting the simulation results for the next 30 years. The analysis results of the system dynamics showed that a declining population of Bali cattle over the next 19 or 25 years due to the ranchers' current behavior. The contributing factors included calf mortality that reached 29.6% per year; Bali cow mortality was up to 14.1% per year; calving interval was 22 months; traditional farm management that it is not economical; and the rate of livestock export reached 29.5% per year of the total population. Rancher management interventions and farm policies to reduce the inhibiting factors of cattle productivity are needed to maintain the population of Bali cattle in Timor Island, especially in the agricultural ecosystem.

Abstract

This study aimed to assess the welfare and performance of Bali cattle transported by Camara Nusantara vessel. We observed five-day transporting of 30 Bali cattle (1-2 years old, 100-200kg body weight) from cattle loading at Tenau Port, Kupang and cattle handling during sea transportation to cattle unloading at Tanjung Priok Port, Jakarta. The measured parameters were cattle’s physiological responses, including body surface temperature, foaming (excessive foam around their mouth), respiration (respiration rate during transportation), and panting (any panting behavior during the transport). The behavioral responses measured in this study were feeding behavior (do cattle eat normally during transportation process), lying (can cattle lie normally), agonistic interaction (mounting, head fighting, etc.), freeze during the loading/ unloading process (stop walking during loading and unloading process), coercion (cattle was hit during loading and unloading process), and slip/fall (cattle slipped or fell during loading and unloading process). The welfare evaluation was carried out by scoring system on the observed parameters. The result showed that the cattle showed a normal physiological response, except their body surface temperature was slightly above normal, i.e., 32-35oC. The cattle also showed normal behavior responses except for coercion. The average score gets from this study was 2.5, indicative of slightly poor physiology and behavior when cattle being transported.

Abstract

Local beef cattle is still the major source of domestic beef consumption, yet their productivity and quality is relatively low. This study was aimed to investigate productivity and meat quality traits of local beef cattle through fattening using cereals based concentrate containing different energy level. Nine Ongole cattle with average initial liveweight of 254.67 ± 20.7 kg and age between I1-I2 permanent incisor teeth were used in the study. They were fattened for four months and alloted into three different energy rations; they were low (ER) 57.88% TDN, medium (ES) 63.72% TDN, and high (ET) 69.67% TDN. The three rations had simmilar protein contents, between 12.42-12.96%. Observed parameters included cattle performance (ration and nutrition dry mater intake, daily gain, and feed conversion), carcass traits (carcass weight and percentage, fat thickness, and loin eye area at the 12th rib), and meat quality traits (pH, water holding capacity, tenderness, cooking loss, marbling score, and meat color). The results showed that cattle fed with high energy (ET) ration had the highest body weight and marbling score, and more efficient in feed conversion than medium (ES) and low energy (ER) rations. Local beef cattle productivity and there meat quality could be improve through fattening using high energy cereals based concentrate.

Abstract

Morphometric measurements using digital image technique give a lot of benefits i.e., a safer method both for the researchers and the experimental animals, produce a more accurate morphometric data, reduce the stress in the experimental animals and produce a more detail and complete morphometric data. This experiment used 20 Ongole cross cattle and 20 Bali cattle with the average age of 3 years. Digital image data were collected by using DSLR camera with 18Mp resolution. The collected digital image data were analyzed by using Image J program. Parameters measured in this observation were body length, body height, hip height, pelvic height, loin height, the length of ossa vertebrae cervicales, the length of ossa vertebrae thoracicae, the length of ossa vertebrae lumbales, the length of os scapula, the length of os humerus, the length of ossa radius-ulna, the length of os metacarpale III, the length of os femoris, the length of ossa tibia-fibula, and the length of os metatarsale III. Digital image technique could replace the manual technique for morphometric measurement with a lower level of variance (<10%). Application of digital image technique for measurement of morphometric parameters in Ongole Cross and Bali cattle showed that Bali cattle has a potential for muscle deposition in body frame and body axis while Ongole Cross cattle has a potential for muscle deposition in fore and hind legs.

Abstract

Peatlands have specific characteristics with waterlogged conditions, fragile, and less fertile. The level of peatlands fertility dependent on depth peat and the distance from rivers. This study was aimed to evaluate nutrient adequacy and prevalence of worm infestations in the gastrointestinal tract of Bali cattle that maintained in different peatland categories. The research was conducted in Pulang Pisau District, Central Kalimantan. The site was determined by purposive sampling and divided into 3 categories peat swamp, shallow peat near the river, and shallow peat away from the river. The data were collected by survey method and laboratory analysis. The variables observed included forage quality, nutrient intake, the number of infected cows, and the number of eggs per gram of feces (EPG). The results showed that each category of peatland have different feed quality and nutrient adequacy (P<0.05). The nutrient intake in the peat swamps was relatively higher than that of other sites. In general, the nutrient adequacy of cattle raised in the peatlands area was still below the standard requirement. In all peatland categories, the occurring of Ca deficiency in the diet was pronounced. The highest prevalence of parasitic worms infection was found in cows raised in peat swamps. Bali cattle that maintained in different peatland categories generally showed different responses in nutrient adequacy and prevalence of parasitic worms infection. Abstract

Myostatin (MSTN) gene acts as a negative regulator of muscle growth. The aim of the present study was to identify polymorphism of g.-371T>A in promoter region of MSTN gene in Indonesian beef cattle. Blood samples were collected from 191 cattle, including Bali (BL) (42), Madura (MD) (20), Pesisir (PI) (17), Katingan (KT) (16), Ongole grade (PO) (22), Pasundan (PD) (14), Sumba ongole (SO) (10), Brahman (BH) (17), Simmental (SM) (15), and Limousin (LM) (18). Polymorphism of MSTN gene was analyzed using PCR-RFLP (DraI) and direct sequencing methods. Results of genotyping g-371T>A were polymorphic (TT, TA, and AA genotypes) in Simmental, SO, and Katingan. The frequencies of alleles T and A were 0.83; 0.90; 0.97 and 0.17; 0.10; 0.03 respectively. The values of Ho and He were 0.06–0.20 and 0.06–0.28, respectively. The results of this study are in Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium (P> 0.05). Whereas in PD, MD, PI, PO, BH, LM, and BL were monomorphic (TT genotype). The result of sequencing the promoter region of MSTN gene found that mutations transversion was occurred in T to A at g.-371. It was concluded that g.-371T>A of MSTN gene was polymorphic which was potential to be used as genetic markers of muscle growth in SM, SO, and KT cattle. Keywords: SNP g.-371T>A of MSTN gene, Sumba ongole cattle, Katingan cattle, Simmental cattle

Abstract

An experiment was conducted in order to study the influence of supplemented sucrose and injected insulin under different recovery times following transportation on lamb flavor quality. For the purpose the study used fifty four female local lamb (10 to 12 months of age) with weight ranging from 14 to 17 kg. The experimental lamb were assigned into a completely randomized design with 2x3x3 factorial arrangement with 3 replications. The first factor was sucrose supplementation with 2 levels (0 and 6 g/kg body weight). The second factor was insulin injection after transportation with 3 levels (0, 0,3 and 0,6 IU). The third factor was the duration of recovery times with 3 levels (2, 4 and 6 h prior to slaughtering). Parameters measured were glucose, fructose, and ribose. Results showed that feeding sugar and injecting insulin to lamb following transportation increased glucose, fructose, and ribose content of raw meat while recovery time was not affect meat sugar content. Interaction was not occur between treatment of Sugar, insulin, and recovery time.

Abstract

High blood cholesterol in human might cause atheroskelerosis, a disease that eventually leads to the occurrence of coronary heart attack. This research was aimed to investigate level of sago waste or shrimp waste on plasma cholesterol and growth in rats. The experiment was conducted on 28 males Spraque dowley rat of one month old and was set up in a completely randomized design with seven treatments and four replications. The treatments were R0 (0 % sago waste and srimp meal) as a control, ASA 10 (10% of sago waste), ASA 20% (20% of sago waste), ASAF 10% (10% fermentation of sago waste), ASAF 20% (20% fermentation of sago waste), LU 10% (10% of srimp waste), LU 20% (20% of srimp waste). Variables measured included feed intake, body weight gain, plasma cholesterol, high density lipoprotein, low density lipoprotein, and triglyceride. The results showed that there was non-significant decrease in feed intake, whereas on body weight gain showed significant effect (P<0.05) between ASA 20%, ASAF 20% and LU 20%. Feed eficiency showed significant effect (P < 0, 01) between R0, ASA 20%, LU 10% with LU 20%. There was significant differences (P < 0.05) in plasma cholesterol between ASA 20% and R0, ASA 10%, LU 10% and 10% of ASAF, while HDL, LDL and plasma triglyceride did not indicate a significant effect between treatment. It  is concluded that percentages of sago waste, fermentation of sago waste and shrimp waste in the ration as an effort to reduce cholesterol do not give a positive effect on feed intake, HDL, LDL and plasma triglyceride of rats; giving 20% of sago waste, 10% of fermentation of sago waste and 10% of shrimp waste showed significant effect on body weight gain, and the highest was obtained at a given ration ASA 20%, i.e. 3.55 g; giving  ASA 20% has the highest feed eficiency  that is  0.31;  giving  20% of sago waste, fermentated sago waste and shrimp waste reduce cholesterol level significantly. The lowest plasma cholesterol was obtained at 20% ASA treatment that is 59.75 mg/dl.   Key words: sago waste, fermentation, shrimp waste, rat performance
