Abstract

In addition to decorate the yard, plant namnam (Cynometra cauliflora) turns out to have merit as an herbal remedy because it has biological activities such as antimicrobial, antioxidant, cytotoxic, antiviral, anti-inflammatory, antitumor and antidiabetic. It is study will add to scientific information about plants Namnam the potential to be developed as a functional food and natural herbal remedies in particular as antidiabetic agents and antidiarrheal. Ability as an antidiabetic agent tested by the ability of plants Namnam inhibit α-amylase. Meanwhile, antidiarrheal activity will be tested against the isolated rabbit intestine recorded on kymograph. The analysis showed that the leaf extract of plant Namnam (C. cauliflora) at a concentration of 100 mg/mL, 250 mg/mL and 300 mg/mL each is able to inhibit α-amylase activity by 20.68%; 70.24% and 72.59% and IC50 of 200.67 ± 0.53 mg/mL. The study also showed that the sample tested has the ability to decrease the activity of isolated rabbit intestine in the pattern described in kymograph. Thus the plant leaves Namnam (C. cauliflora) potential to be developed as antidibetes agent and antidiarrheal.  This may partially explain the use in traditional medicine for the treatment of diarrhea. These results support their use in folk medicine. Keywords: Antidiabetic, antidiarrheal,  Cynometra cauliflora, Namnam

Abstract

This experiment was designed to study the effect of pegagan (Centella asiatica) and turmeric (Curcuma longa) extracts on the activities of glutathione peroxidase (GSH- Px) in liver of white Spraque Dawley rat aged 2 months old with average weight of 200 grams. Pegagan was extracted using infuse method, and turmeric was extracted using dekokta method. The activity of GSH-Px was measured using Flohe and Gunzler’s methods. Extract pegagan and turmeric were assumed to have both preventive and curative treatments. For the preventive treat- ment, extract pegagan and turmeric at concentrations of 22.05 mg/ml : 184.1 mg/ml could increased the activity of GSH-PX enzyme, i.e. 232.60 ± 21.40 mU / mgprotein. This was approximately 79% than the levels of GSH- Px enzyme in normal liver without paracetamol which was 190.78 ± 9.28 mU/mgprotein. For the curative treatment, extract pegagan and tumeric at concentration of 22.05 mg/ml : 184.1 mg/ml could improved GSH- Px enzyme activity (i.e. 239.01 ± 47.40 mU/ mgprotein). This figure was about 92% higher than the levels of GSH-Px enzyme in the liver normal without paracetamol which was 190.78 ± 9.28 mU/mg protein. Pegagan and turmeric extracts with a high concentration could increased the activity of GSH-Px enzyme, thus potential as curative treatment.

An experiment was conducted on the effects of rice bran that has high dietary fiber content on blood lipid parameters of hypercholesterolemic male mice, which was conducted at the Biology Education Department animal cages, Indonesia University of Education and the Veterinary Medicine Faculty Laboratory, Bogor Agricultural Institute from August 2011 to March 2012. The mice were randomly assigned into groups with 5 different treatments: negative control group i.e. normocholesterol mice with a standard diet without rice bran; positive control group i.e. hypercholesterolemic mice with a standard diet without rice bran; and groups with hypercholesterolemic mice with 16%, 38%, and 75% rice bran supplements. The parameters were body weight as well as blood serum, liver and feces cholesterol, triglyceride, high density lipoprotein (HDL-c), low density lipoprotein (LDL-c) and glucose levels. Body weight, blood serum and liver cholesterol as well as triglyceride and LDL concentrations decreased while serum HDL-c and feces cholesterol increased without any significant effect on blood glucose concentration with rice bran supplement. Supplementation of rice bran by 57% (14.30% of nonsoluble dietary fiber content) decreased body weight, total serum cholesterol, triglyceride, and LDL-c of 10.31%, 17.28%, 28.63%, and 79.35%, respectively, and increased HDL-c by 24.41%. Rice bran supplement reduced liver cholesterol levels by 57.76% and increased fecal cholesterol excretion by 39.68%. In conclusion, 57% rice bran supplementation is effective to improve blood lipid parameters of hypercholesterolemic male mice by increasing feces excretion and decreasing body weight with no change in blood glucose level. Abstract

This study aims to obtain the physiological value of dugongs that live in natural habitats (in-situ) as protected wildlife, namely on the coast of Lingayan Island, Toli-Toli Regency. Wild dugongs caught on the beach were put into a net cage. After 14 days of living in a beach cage, measurements of heart rate, respiration, and body temperature were measured using non-invasive methods. This study showed that the value of heart rate, respiration, and body temperature were measured (80.00±17.32) beats/minutes, (17.33±6.80) inspiration/minute, and (32.75±0.07)°C. This physiological value is higher when compared to dugongs that live in captivity, this is likely due to the process of homeostasis through physiological adaptation mechanisms. The physiological value of the dugong is very important for the advancement of dugong animal health science and technology. Besides this finding can be a medical reference that is very useful for veterinarians in the diagnostic and therapeutic process.

Abstract

Dog is man's favorite companion animal and they are also beneficial as an animal model in biomedical research. So far, the Indonesian native dog's physiological values for diagnostic or research purposes, was based on literature which differed in breeds, geography and age variety. Furthermore, there is little publication on Indonesian native's dog physiological value which emphasize on its age variety, specially its comparative study between adult and puppies. Comparative parameters which were used in this study were heart rate {HR), respiratory rate {RR), non-invasive blood pressure {NIBP) and rectal temperature {RT). The study utilized fifteen Indonesian native dogs. The result showed a significant {p< 0.05) higher HR's values on puppies to adult, which are 152.50±14.76 and 95.93±23.7 beat per minute), respectively, while the RT's were lower on puppies to adults {37.53±0.29 and 38.23±0.73 °C, respectively). The NIBP's values were significantly lower on puppies to adult, which are systole {83.93±13.29 Vs 129.68±24.45 mmHg), diastole {37.50±16.31 Vs 72.96±20.33 mmHg) and mean blood pressure values {58.21±13.30 Vs 91.82±24.34 mmHg). The insignificant result was found on RR values which are 26.50±7.93 and 28.21±14.34 for puppies and adult, respectively. The main reason for the differences in above parameters among puppies and adult can be defined by their metabolic rate and growth process.

Abstract

This study was to evaluate the depolarization of katuk leaves (Katuk-IPB3) as a feed additive for increasing dairy cattle milk yield at the farmer condition. Sixteen selected lactating cattles were divided into 4 groups; 4 cattles in each group. One group as a control, and 3 treated groups, namely P100, P150, and P200. P100, P200, and P300 were designated as cattle group given powder of Katuk-IPB3 as much as 100 g/day, 150 g/day, and 200 g/day, respectively. The treatment was executed in the 10 days before pregnancy up to 2 months lactating periods. Katuk-IPB3 showed significant positive response on the produced milk on all dose levels as compared to the control group, i.e. 35, 40, and 34% increased, respectively. The possible reason is that the nonpolar active compounds in the Katuk-IPB3 play an important role to the hormonal and metabolic action in the lactating mammary gland.

Abstract

This study aims to determine the effect of additional feed with depolarizing katuk leaves on the production and quality of colostrum and colostrum milk in Friesian Holstein dairy cows. There were 21 dairy cows that had just giving birth, divided into 3 groups of 7 each, namely the control group (complete feed), BKD (complete feed added with Depolarizing Katuk Powder), PKD (complete feed added with Depolarizing Katuk Pellet). Depolarizing katuk feed was given 100 grams per head per day as a feed additive. Parameters observed were feed consumption, production and quality of colostrum and colostrum milk. The results showed that there was no difference in the consumption of feed supplemented with depolarizing katuk leaves, colostrum production, milk density, total solid colostrum, Solid non-fat, lactose contents, and protein contents of colostrum and colostrum milk compared to the control group. Significant differences occurred in colostrum milk production, total solid colostrum milk, and fat content of colostrum and colostrum milk. It was concluded that depolarizing katuk leaves could be used as additional feed to increase the production and total solids of colostrum milk, and increase the fat content of colostrum and colostrum milk. Keywords: colostrum, colostrum milk, depolarizing katuk leaf, Friesian Holstein
