Abstract

One of the ecological function of mangrove forests is a habitat for mosquitoes that cause malaria (Anopheles sp.). Epidemic of malaria could increased as a result of mangrove degradation. The damage of mangrove forests stimulate Anopheles sp. migrate to other habitats such as settlements, that become malaria vector. The purpose of this research was to determine the effect of mangrove forest ecosystems both intrinsic and extrinsic factors in immunity to malaria. This research was conducted on June 2014 in the Muara Gading Mas Village, Bandar Negeri, Sriminosari, and Margasari, Sub-district Labuhan Maringgai, District East Lampung. The data were collected through interviews and survey/observations method. The impact of each variable used binary logistic regression models. Parameter optimization used software Minitab 16. The result of research have been demonstrated that there is influence both intrinsic and extrinsic factors in immunity to malaria in mangrove forest. Factors that increase resistance to malaria: (a) gender, male37.42 fold of female, (b) age, getting older every 1 year doubled to 1.17 times of originally, (c) education, the higher it is reduced to 0.001 times the originally, (d) livelihood, besides fisher 0,001 fold of fisherman, (e) the distance settlements to the health facility, each reduced to 1 meter doubled to 0.09 times the originally, (f) the distance home to mangroves, each increase of 1 meter doubled to 1,001 times the originally, (g) the dustbin, there are bins 239.71 better than none, (h) the malaria program, multiply 3.71E+05 originally than none, (i) extensive mangrove, increasing 1 m2 become 1,001 fold of originally, and (j) mangrove density, increasing 1 population/ha multiply 1.18 fold originally. Abstract

Kuala Tolam Village, Pelalawan Regency, has forest areas and peatland ecosystems that play an important role ecologically, economically, and socially for the community. However, these areas have been experiencing continuous decline and pressure due to industrial activities and land-clearing practices. This condition requires a deeper understanding of stakeholder perceptions of forest functions, as an essential basis for building a commitment to preserve and maintain the remaining forest areas. The purpose of this study is to analyze stakeholder perceptions of forest functions in efforts to maintain forest areas in Kuala Tolam Village, focusing on three aspects: economic, social, and ecological. The research employed both quantitative and qualitative approaches, using interviews with stakeholders who were involved in discussion forums for the formation of commitments to protect forest areas in Kuala Tolam Village. The results show that stakeholder perceptions of forest functions in Kuala Tolam Village fall into the “agree” category across all measured aspects economic, ecological, and social. The positive perceptions of stakeholders regarding forest functions indicate a collective awareness of the importance of forests for life. This awareness serves as social capital for building a shared commitment to safeguarding forest functions and areas.

Abstract

This community service activity aimed to enhance the competencies of Forestry students at SMK Negeri 1 Tualang, Siak Regency, in drone-based videography using Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) technology. The training was conducted through an experiential learning approach that integrated theoretical instruction, technical demonstrations, and hands-on field practice. Training materials covered UAV fundamentals, flight safety, and aerial videography techniques relevant to forestry applications. The effectiveness of the program was evaluated using pre-test and post-test methods, supported by observations and interviews. The results indicated a substantial increase in the participants’ average scores, from 57.91% before the training to 96.51% after the training. The Wilcoxon Signed Rank Test revealed a statistically significant difference between pre-test and post-test results (p 0.05), confirming the positive impact of the training on students’ knowledge and technical skills. In addition, the program fostered improved confidence, discipline, and responsibility in drone operation. This activity contributes to strengthening vocational competencies and technological literacy in forestry education.

Abstract

Kuala Tolam Village, Pelalawan Regency, Riau Province, is one of the regions that still possesses significant peatland forests, which are ecologically, socially, and economically important. However, pressures from plantation expansion, land conversion, and limited community knowledge about forest functions have made this area vulnerable to degradation. This community service activity aimed to enhance public knowledge of the importance of forests. The method employed was socialization through an educational, participatory, and interactive approach combined with small group discussions. The respondents in this activity were stakeholders involved in community deliberations with the Siak Pelalawan Landscape Program in the context of forming a collective commitment to maintain forest functions and areas. The results of this activity showed an increase in community knowledge about forest functions as measured by several aspects, namely forest definition, forest types, and forest functions. Community understanding of the definition of forests increased by 39%, knowledge of forest types around Kuala Tolam Village increased by 36%, and knowledge of forest functions increased by 30%. These findings indicate that the socialization and educational approaches applied were successful in raising public awareness of the importance of forests in supporting the community’s commitment to preserving forest functions and areas. Furthermore, the formation of such commitment, supported by enhanced knowledge and understanding, is expected to serve as a strong foundation for establishing a forest patrol and monitoring team in Kuala Tolam Village, Pelalawan Regency.

Abstract

This community service activity aimed to improve the knowledge of residents of Kuala Tolam Village regarding drought control, flood management, peatland ecosystems, and riverbank landslide mitigation in areas vulnerable to hydrometeorological hazards. The education program was conducted through material delivery, discussions, and pre-test and post-test evaluations using a questionnaire. Data were analyzed using IBM SPSS Statistics 20 to describe respondent characteristics and to examine knowledge improvement using a paired sample t-test. The results showed that 66.67% of participants were initially in the low knowledge category; however, after the intervention, all participants improved to the moderate and high categories. The mean knowledge score increased from 47.33 to 69.73, with a statistically significant difference (p 0.05). This improvement was supported by the relevance of the materials, including peatland hydrology, drought control, flood mitigation, and riverbank bioengineering. Participatory education is therefore important for strengthening community capacity and village preparedness in managing environmental risks in peatland ecosystems.

Abstract

Utilizing coconut waste, particularly shells and husks, as raw material for charcoal briquettes holds great potential for supporting environmentally friendly and sustainable renewable energy. However, this waste is still not being utilized optimally, even though it can reduce environmental pollution while providing economic benefits. This study aims to evaluate the effect of varying the mixing ratio of coconut shells and husks on the physical characteristics and performance of the resulting charcoal briquettes, as well as to determine the optimal composition as an alternative energy source. The research was conducted at the Forestry Laboratory of the Faculty of Agriculture, Universitas Riau, over a five-month period (August–December 2025). The raw materials consisted of coconut shells and husks with three composition variations: 100% shells, 75% shells + 25% husks, and 50% shells + 50% husks. The carbonization process was performed conventionally for one hour. Afterward, the charcoal was ground, mixed with arpus binder, molded, and tested for briquette characteristics such as moisture content, density, and calorific value. The results showed that the 100% coconut shell briquette had the lowest moisture content (6.51%) and the highest density (0.79 g/cm³), resulting in more efficient, stable combustion and a high calorific value. Conversely, increasing the proportion of coconut husk raised the moisture content to 16.58% and lowered the density to 0.66 g/cm³, which negatively impacted briquette quality. Low moisture content and high density are key indicators of good briquette quality. In conclusion, a briquette formulation dominated by coconut shells is recommended for producing high-quality charcoal briquettes as an environmentally friendly and sustainable source of renewable energy, as well as supporting optimal coconut waste management in Riau Province and surrounding areas.
