Abstract

All sectors have realized that waste, especially plastic waste, has become a complex and serious environmental problem, not only in Indonesia, but also around the world. Plastic waste has a major impact on public health and environmental sustainability. In Indonesia, this negative impact is increasingly felt, with an increase in the amount of plastic waste that is not properly managed, polluting nature and damaging ecosystems. For this reason, there needs to be strategic efforts to reduce the use of plastic, one of which is through environmental education. This research explores the role of environmental education as a strategy to instill environmental awareness in students, so that they are more concerned about the impact of plastic waste. The method used in this study is library research, by analyzing various literature and previous research. The results show that environmental education can increase students' awareness of the dangers of plastic waste and the importance of better waste management. In addition, environmental education can also motivate students to apply the 3R (Reduce, Reuse, Recycle) principles in their daily lives. Practice-based learning and real actions have proven to be effective in arousing students' enthusiasm to reduce plastic waste. By involving students in activities directly related to waste management, they can feel the benefits and be motivated to participate in preserving the environment. Sustainable environmental education has great potential in shaping student behavior as agents of change towards a waste-free Indonesia in the future.

Abstract

Wild deer populations have declined owing to poaching and habitat loss. Conservation in captive outside deer's native environment can prevent extinction and maximize sustainable use. IUCN classifies Spotted Deer (Axis axis) as least concern. The Muhammad Sabki City Forest Park contains 5 Spotted Deer (Axis axis) from PTPN 6, 1 Male and 4 Female, presented to Jambi City Government. Captivity (ex-situ conservation) can optimize and maintain Spotted Deer use to rebuild the population. The research used Focal Animal Sampling and Continuous Recording in Muhammad Sabki City Forest Park in Jambi City in June 2024. Male and female deer were observed for data collection. Observation and computation took 10 hours with 15-minute intervals and 5 sessions.

Abstract

Indonesia has vast mangrove forest potential with high biodiversity and great ecological benefits. One of the developing management approaches is community-based mangrove ecotourism which not only emphasizes economic aspects but also environmental conservation. This study aims to analyze the involvement of local communities in mangrove ecotourism management and its impact on mangrove forest conservation in Indonesia. The method used is literature analysis with a descriptive-qualitative approach to ten studies published in the last 5-10 years. The results of the analysis show that active community participation in planning, implementing and evaluating the management of ecotourism areas contributes significantly to the sustainability of mangrove ecosystems. Despite the challenges of unequal capacity and strategic roles, this study confirms that community involvement is an important pillar in the success of community-based conservation. Thus, a collaborative approach between the community, government, and other stakeholders needs to be continuously strengthened to support ecotourism as well as mangrove conservation.

Abstract

Kuala Tolam Village, Pelalawan Regency, has forest areas and peatland ecosystems that play an important role ecologically, economically, and socially for the community. However, these areas have been experiencing continuous decline and pressure due to industrial activities and land-clearing practices. This condition requires a deeper understanding of stakeholder perceptions of forest functions, as an essential basis for building a commitment to preserve and maintain the remaining forest areas. The purpose of this study is to analyze stakeholder perceptions of forest functions in efforts to maintain forest areas in Kuala Tolam Village, focusing on three aspects: economic, social, and ecological. The research employed both quantitative and qualitative approaches, using interviews with stakeholders who were involved in discussion forums for the formation of commitments to protect forest areas in Kuala Tolam Village. The results show that stakeholder perceptions of forest functions in Kuala Tolam Village fall into the “agree” category across all measured aspects economic, ecological, and social. The positive perceptions of stakeholders regarding forest functions indicate a collective awareness of the importance of forests for life. This awareness serves as social capital for building a shared commitment to safeguarding forest functions and areas.

Abstract

Kuala Tolam Village, Pelalawan Regency, Riau Province, is one of the regions that still possesses significant peatland forests, which are ecologically, socially, and economically important. However, pressures from plantation expansion, land conversion, and limited community knowledge about forest functions have made this area vulnerable to degradation. This community service activity aimed to enhance public knowledge of the importance of forests. The method employed was socialization through an educational, participatory, and interactive approach combined with small group discussions. The respondents in this activity were stakeholders involved in community deliberations with the Siak Pelalawan Landscape Program in the context of forming a collective commitment to maintain forest functions and areas. The results of this activity showed an increase in community knowledge about forest functions as measured by several aspects, namely forest definition, forest types, and forest functions. Community understanding of the definition of forests increased by 39%, knowledge of forest types around Kuala Tolam Village increased by 36%, and knowledge of forest functions increased by 30%. These findings indicate that the socialization and educational approaches applied were successful in raising public awareness of the importance of forests in supporting the community’s commitment to preserving forest functions and areas. Furthermore, the formation of such commitment, supported by enhanced knowledge and understanding, is expected to serve as a strong foundation for establishing a forest patrol and monitoring team in Kuala Tolam Village, Pelalawan Regency.
