Abstract

The presence of Islam in the Nusantara contributes to the diversity of cultures in the Nusantara, which then forms Islamic traditions in various regions. One of them is the Okol tradition in Madura, East Java. This study aims to examine the integration of Islamic values and local culture in the Okol tradition, especially in Madura. There are three discussions, namely the explanation of the relationship between Islam and local culture, the history and development of the Okol tradition in general and specifically in Madura, and the last is analysis of the integration of Islamic values and local culture in the Okol tradition. This research uses qualitative methods with data collection techniques through interviews, observation, and documentation to get accurate and in-depth results. Researchers also relied on articles and news to support the research. This research produces several important points, namely that religion and culture have a close relationship. Islam without culture has no form. Then, the Okol tradition is a tradition carried out from generation to generation by the Madurese community to wait for the rain to come. The analysis of the Okol tradition confirmed that the mixing of Islamic values with local culture is real, which can be observed from the Okol events series such as the Okol orchestra, the reading of Du'a, and the wrestling match. This study is expected to provide a clearer description of Islamic values and local culture in the Okol tradition in Madura.

Abstract

Abstract: The Sultanate of Aceh Darussalam played a significant role in developing maritime trade in the archipelago during the XVI-XVII centuries. This study aims to analyze the contributions of the Sultanate to this progress, using historical research methods that include heuristics, source criticism, interpretation, and historiography. The Sultanate controlled maritime and trade routes, which made it rich in natural resources and agricultural products. Its emergence as a new ruler in the Aceh region was due to opposition to monopoly actions and attempts to colonize Portuguese territory in Sumatra, particularly in the island's northern part. The Sultanate's military strength in the mid-sixteenth century also contributed to its strong maritime politics. Additionally, the Sultanate's trade economy continued to thrive, particularly in strategic areas of maritime trade, such as the regional part of Sumatra and the Malacca Straits. This research sheds light on the importance of the Sultanate of Aceh Darussalam in shaping the archipelago's maritime and trade history during the Middle Ages.Abstrak: Perkembangan dan kejayaan Kesultanan Aceh Darussalam pada Abad Pertengahan di Nusantara adalah isu penting. Abstract

This research examines the development of maritime culture in the Islamic Mataram Kingdom during Sultan Agung (1613-1645 AD), focusing on the interaction between agrarian and maritime cultures that shaped the Kingdom's identity. The Islamic Mataram Kingdom, located in the interior of Java, not only developed agrarian power but also made maritime expansion efforts as its power base. Through a historical approach using political and cultural analyses of primary sources, such as Babad Tanah Djawi, with the concepts of continuity and change as well as cultural acculturation as the basis for understanding the social dynamics that occurred, this research explores Sultan Agung's various policies, including the development of port infrastructure, the strengthening of the navy, and the development of religious traditions related to the sea. The results show that these policies expanded trade routes and strengthened the Kingdom's social and political legitimacy. By integrating local culture and Islamic elements, Sultan Agung created a synergy between agrarian and maritime power, significantly impacting Mataram society's economic and social stability. The findings are expected to provide new insights into the role of marine culture in Indonesian history, which is inclusive, cosmopolitan, multicultural, intercultural/mutual cooperation, and egalitarian, and its relevance in the context of marine culture development today.

Abstract

The Nyadran tradition has become an important part of the life of the Javanese transmigrant community. Through the Nyadran tradition, Javanese transmigrant women can establish relationships, both with God, with nature as their place of residence, and with fellow human beings. By using the concept of Gender as an analytical tool, this study aims to see how the Nyadran tradition rituals are carried out by the Javanese transmigrant community, and to see how the role of women is in the Nyadran tradition rituals. In this study used a qualitative-descriptive method with unstructured interview data collection techniques. Data collection was also carried out by tracing the literature on the Nyadran tradition, both in the form of books and journal articles. The results showed that the Nyadran tradition was carried out by the Javanese transmigrant community every year, 10 days before the arrival of the month of Ramadan. This tradition is carried out by visiting the tombs or visiting the graves of the ancestors, tahlilan, listening to religious lectures, and feasting or eating together. In practice, women's roles are still found in the domestic sphere. Starting from providing various types of flowers and water, bringing yasin books and mats, and preparing ubarampe or various types of cakes and rice along with side dishes. Women are also subordinated by not being given the opportunity to deliver religious lectures. Through the delivery of religious interpretations, women are also subordinated and become a form of stereotype and shows that the patriarchal culture is still strong in the Javanese transmigrant community.
