Abstract

This study examines the changes in the Wetu Telu Islamic tradition in Narmada District, West Lombok Regency from 1998 to 2022. Wetu Telu Islam is a tradition practiced by some Sasak people, combining animistic beliefs and ancestral worship with Islamic teachings. In contrast, Waktu Lima Islam follows Shari’ah more comprehensively as taught by the Qur’an and Hadith. The rapid advancement of information technology, particularly social media, has influenced religious behavior among the Wetu Telu community. This research is descriptive-qualitative, using an anthropological approach to religion and employing historical research methods, including heuristics, verification, interpretation, and historiography. The findings indicate that: first, the social structure in West Lombok features stratification affecting political, traditional, and religious dominance. Second, Wetu Telu Islam represents a syncretism of Islamic, Hindu, and animistic teachings, creating a new culture while maintaining Islamic values. Third, the Wetu Telu tradition has undergone changes due to advances in knowledge, technology, and shifts in societal perspectives.

Abstract

Religion and culture are two elements that constantly interact in shaping human civilisation, including in the context of Indonesian local culture. The megalithic site of Ulak Lebar in Lubuklinggau City is one cultural heritage site that shows traces of the encounter between local traditions and Islamic influences. This article aims to reveal the process of socio-cultural change that occurred through the interaction between megalithic traditions and Islamic teachings at the site. This study uses historical methods through the stages of heuristics, source criticism, interpretation, and historiography. The results of the study indicate that there has been a balanced cultural acculturation between megalithic and Islamic cultures, resulting in a unique cultural product in the form of Islamic menhirs paired menhirs used as grave markers. This finding indicates a cultural leap, in which Hindu-Buddhist culture, which generally served as a transitional phase in other regions, did not play a significant role in Ulak Lebar. This acculturation occurred because the megalithic tradition was deeply rooted in the community, while Islam arrived through an inclusive approach to power via the Sultanate of Palembang. This research contributes to the study of local cultural history, particularly in understanding the dynamics of cultural integration in the inland regions of South Sumatra, and underscores the importance of preserving cultural heritage in the context of social change.

Abstract

This paper aims to discuss Uthman bin Mazh'un's paragraph in visuals, literature in the Nusantara and the international exhibition of the power of the Ka'bah II. The character of the Prophet Muhammad's companion is that of a friend who cares about others' suffering. Next, the visual form of paraga Uthman bin Mazh'un will be explained, along with its meaning in a review of Indonesian literature and in the international exhibition of the power of the Ka'bah II. Visual, literary, and exhibition discussions will help readers understand the character in a cultural context. Visual paraga in the form of wayang implies a specific message to the audience. Especially when exhibited on the international scene. Apart from that, the messages in Javanese literature are moralistic and intended for connoisseurs. Therefore, Uthman bin Mazh'un's paragraph in the wayang Kekayon Khalifah can serve as a beautiful educational tool for the public, both in appearance and language.

Abstract

This research examines the development of maritime culture in the Islamic Mataram Kingdom during Sultan Agung (1613-1645 AD), focusing on the interaction between agrarian and maritime cultures that shaped the Kingdom's identity. The Islamic Mataram Kingdom, located in the interior of Java, not only developed agrarian power but also made maritime expansion efforts as its power base. Through a historical approach using political and cultural analyses of primary sources, such as Babad Tanah Djawi, with the concepts of continuity and change as well as cultural acculturation as the basis for understanding the social dynamics that occurred, this research explores Sultan Agung's various policies, including the development of port infrastructure, the strengthening of the navy, and the development of religious traditions related to the sea. The results show that these policies expanded trade routes and strengthened the Kingdom's social and political legitimacy. By integrating local culture and Islamic elements, Sultan Agung created a synergy between agrarian and maritime power, significantly impacting Mataram society's economic and social stability. The findings are expected to provide new insights into the role of marine culture in Indonesian history, which is inclusive, cosmopolitan, multicultural, intercultural/mutual cooperation, and egalitarian, and its relevance in the context of marine culture development today.
