Abstract

The colonial government's hopes to create a rest and order in its colonies proved unsuccessful. The instruments used are not able to force the public to be disciplined. Surabaya, the locus of this article, is not only interesting in a geographical sense, because of its position as a colonial city, but also because colonial governance practices take place intensively in this city. This study aims to complete the aspects that still neglect the attention of scholars by examining the practice of colonial governance to discipline the people of Surabaya through waste and excrement management. In addition to mapping the government policies in waste and excrement management, this article also analyzes why the colonial government failed to discipline the community. This study relies on primary sources in the form of newspapers published during the colonial period. The collected data was analyzed by following three stages, namely reduction, display, and data verification. This article concludes that the community's violation of colonial government rules in waste and excrement management shows the failure of colonial governance practices in disciplining the community. This community disobedience also reflects the public's distrust of the apparatus that carries out the rules. This study also shows that the repressive attitude of the colonial government in implementing environmental hygiene rules reflects awareness among Europeans about the importance of environmental health which is in line with public health.

Abstract

Central Sulawesi is renowned for its abundance of vital megalithic remnants, with Poso and Sigi districts standing out as key areas with thousands of such remains. This article delves into the endeavors aimed at safeguarding these megalithic remnants, particularly those located in Sigi Regency, notably in Watunonju Village of Sigi Kota District and Loru Village of Sigi Bureaumaru District, commonly referred to as Watunonju. Many of the megalithic remnants preserved in these areas are stone mortars, locally known as "vatunonju". Preserving this invaluable heritage requires concerted protection efforts, including reinforcing customary laws that dictate fines for any damage inflicted upon the sites, elevating the status of these sites to a higher level, both provincially and nationally, and establishing and engaging a community dedicated to the conservation of megalithic remnants and other historical artifacts.

Abstract

The preservation of the traditional art of Pabitte Passapu faces challenges when there are changes in the community supporting the art, so that the inheritance of art to the younger generation is hampered. This condition disrupts the stability of the arts in the Kajang indigenous community. Therefore, the problem in this article is the efforts made by the Kajang indigenous community in maintaining the art of Pabitte Passapu so that the value and meaning of the art remain a source of learning. The objectives of this article are first, to explain that the Kajang indigenous people maintain local values in the midst of societal changes; second, to analyze the performance and meaning of the Pabitte Passapu dance as a source of learning local values; and third, to analyze the ability of the indigenous people to pass on the intellectual property contained in the Pabitte Passapu art. This research uses qualitative research methods. Data were collected through observation, in-depth interviews, oral history interviews, and documentation. Qualitative data analysis uses historical and socio-cultural approaches, especially dance sociology. The results showed that the preservation of the art of Pabitte Passapu can be done through the strategy of strengthening the space for the actualization of art, innovating the inheritance of art through learning and training.

Si tukang sepatu melihat kritiknya ditanggapi oleh Apelles, sehingga si tukang sepatu semakin gencar melakukan kritik.

Abstract

This paper examines the cross-border dynamics of Japanese metalcore, focusing particularly on the band Crossfaith, exploring how they navigate the complexities of global mobility, cultural identity, and transnationalism in their music. This study employs a case study approach, using document analysis as the primary method. The data then was analyzed by identifying recurring themes, patterns, and relationships. The results show that while metalcore itself is already transnational due to its use of English, Crossfaith exemplifies the creation of a "borderless" sound that transcends national boundaries. Through collaborations with international artists, performances at the Nikkosan Rinnoji Temple, and partnerships with local artists, the band manages to maintain a strong Japanese identity while appealing to a global audience. However, cross-border challenges remain, including linguistic barriers, visa restrictions, and cultural negotiations, which impact Crossfaith's international success, revealing the uneven access to global stages for non-Western artists. These challenges highlight the need for a more inclusive and accessible global music industry. This study concludes by advocating for the reduction of systemic barriers to ensure that diverse musical voices can fully participate in the global exchange of ideas, thereby enriching the cultural landscape and promoting greater cross-border collaboration in music.

Abstract

The Rukat Bumi tradition in Tlekung Village and Sukun Village holds deep cultural significance for the local community. However, challenges to its sustainability cannot be overlooked. This study aims to: (1) explain the implementation of Rukat Bumi in Tlekung Village and Sukun Village, and (2) explain adaptive strategies to preserve its cultural identity. Using a descriptive qualitative approach, the study finds that Rukat Bumi in Tlekung Village is conducted in a pavilion where the community gathers for a communal meal. In contrast, in Sukun Village, that tradition involves a procession through the village streets, featuring offerings of crops, particularly a large tumpeng. To ensure the continuity of Rukat Bumi, several adaptive strategies have emerged, including (a) education, (b) leveraging social media, (c) collaboration with various stakeholders, and (d) the development of creative products. Addressing the challenges faced by Rukat Bumiin both locations has significant implications for cultural preservation. Moreover, implementing adaptive strategies not only sustains cultural identity but also fosters an inclusive space for that tradition to thrive across generations.

Abstract

The border area between Indonesia and Timor Leste in East Nusa Tenggara exhibits complex social, economic, and cultural dynamics that rely heavily on cross-border activities facilitated by the Border Pass (PLB) and Border Crossing Identification Card (KILB). The COVID-19 pandemic temporarily halted these activities, disrupting trade, social relations, and the economic well-being of border communities. This study aims to examine the role of PLB and KILB in the lives of people living along the Indonesia–Timor Leste border. The research adopts a qualitative approach using a literature review method presented descriptively. The findings indicate that the restriction of cross-border mobility led to limited access in maintaining family ties, practicing cultural traditions, and engaging in economic activities. Communities experienced a sense of loss in their daily social interactions. Within the framework of cultural constructivism, social interactions and legal frameworks shape a culture that influences identity and cross-border relationships. Therefore, restoring mobility and the functions of PLB/KILB is essential for post-pandemic cultural reconstruction and for strengthening the social ties and identity of border communities.

Abstract

This article discusses the role of the Surabaya Kemayoran Mosque congregation in improving the infrastructure and management of their waqf land. This research uses historical research methods which consist of finding and gathering sources, verification, aufassung, and darstellung. The origins of this mosque came from the results of the compensation given by the Dutch East Indies Government to Muslims because they wanted to demolish the mosque in Surapringgo. However, the grant of land does not have a documents, but only inscription. This mosque then underwent several changes and infrastructure improvements. In addition, the Kemayoran mosque also has a lot of waqf land originating from worshipers. Most of the waqf land is used by residents to be used as residences or businesses with rental status. The rent from the land is used again for the needs of the mosque and funds for improvements. However, because there was no legal document on which to base it, the issue then sparked several problems related to land reform in the 1970s. The worshipers of the mosque took various ways to convince the tenants that there is no connection between waqf land and land reform. Even though many methods have been taken, the tenants are ultimately unwilling to pay any more rental fees, even though the rights to the land and activities on it are still under the auspices of the Kemayoran Mosque.
