Abstract

Students' weak vocabulary mastery affects their ability to form sentences in oral and written communication, leading to low motivation and limited classroom interaction. This study examines students' responses to using word-mapping strategies in vocabulary learning. A qualitative case study design was employed, involving six seventh-grade students in the second semester of the 2023/2024 academic year. Data were collected through observations and interviews and analyzed using thematic analysis. The findings show that word mapping encourages active student engagement, reflected in their affective, behavioral, and cognitive responses. Most students displayed positive feelings, motivation, and interest in learning. Their behavior also supported these emotions, as motivated students were more active and responsive in class interactions. However, excessive student activity occasionally disrupted peers’ concentration. Despite this, class participation helped students better understand vocabulary and improve their language acquisition skills. This study concludes that positive affective responses and engaging word-mapping strategies enhance vocabulary learning and encourage student participation. However, effective classroom management is essential to minimize distractions and optimize learning quality.

Abstract

This study aims to describe students' perceptions of the implementation of interactive read-aloud strategy in learning narrative text. This research used a qualitative approach with a case study design. The participants were one ninth grade class from a junior high school located in Karawang. Data were obtained through interviews with six students as well as observation during the learning process. The interviews were conducted after the implementation of interactive read-aloud strategy. The results showed that students' perceptions responded positively to the implementation of the interactive read-aloud strategy. There are three main findings related to students' perceptions: first, the Interactive Read-Aloud strategy helps students in understanding narrative text; second, the strategy makes the learning process more fun and interesting; and third, the strategy encourages students' active involvement in learning. Therefore, Interactive Read-Aloud plays an important role in creating an interactive learning environment and motivating students to be more engaged. Thus, this strategy is very useful and suitable to be applied to ninth grade students.

Abstract

Abstract

This study investigates formative assessment techniques within the grade 2 English textbook “My Next Words”, focusing on their effectiveness in supporting young learners’ language development. Employing a descriptive evaluative methodology, this research analyzes three representative chapters from the textbook using a structured analytical framework influenced by foundational educational theories from Wortham (204), Boyd (2020), and Gullo (2004). The analysis is centered on several key aspects of formative assessment: task design and effectiveness, task duration and adaptability, task presentation and support, feedback and reinforcement, and repetition and practice. Data were collected through a detailed evaluation checklist applied to selected textbook chapters, with a binary rating system quantifying the presence of effective formative assessment strategies. The findings reveal that while the textbook effectively utilizes engaging and developmentally appropriate activities, there are notable gaps in providing structured progress markers, authentic language, personalized learning experiences, and varied feedback mechanisms. These gaps suggest opportunities for enhancing the textbook’s instructional design to better meet the developmental needs and learning styles of young learners. The implications of this study extend to curriculum developers and educational practitioners, emphasizing the need for textbooks that not only engage young learners but also systematically track and support their language learning progress.

Abstract

This paper aims to describe the translation strategies used in translating cultural words found in the subtitle of Godfather Movies (I and II). Godfather is one of best of all time movies America has ever had. It contains a lot of cultural words worth to notice. Since subtitle is limited both in term of duration and space, it is interesting to find out how the cultural words are translated to be displayed in the subtitle. The researcher gathered the data by watching the movie, spotting the cultural words, and then writing the translation displayed in the subtitle. Using qualitative approach and through comparative method the researcher analyzed the data. The result of this study shows that the subtitler used five procedures in translating cultural words: naturalization, transference, functional equivalence, cultural equivalence, and modulation. The frequently used procedure among them is transference. This research also investigates the parameters influencing the subtitler’s decision in choosing the translation strategies to tranlate cultural words. It was found that there were six influencing parameters: monocultural, transcultural, specific media constraint, centrality of reference, co-text, intersemiotic redundancy. Considering the influencing factors as well as choosing proper translation procedures could minimize the translation problems arised in subtitling.
