Abstract

The YIA airport was built as part of a national master plan to open up economic channels, including export and import, and internationalise the Yogyakarta region. The building of this airport generates an anomaly that is in conflict with the state of the community and the affected environment surrounding the airport, particularly in terms of meeting the SDGs by 2030. Researchers believe that the spectacular infrastructure's state in achieving economic growth is insufficient since the community's environmental and social characteristics also affect the success of the SDG's in regional development, including the development of the airport industry. This study employs qualitative research methodologies to describe the answers to the formulation of the problems investigated through online and offline interviews with the DIY PUP-ESDM Office, Bappeda Kulon Progo, and the people of Palihan Village, Temon District. The findings indicate that efforts to accomplish sustainable development goals from the economic, social, and environmental pillars can be directly tied to the construction of YIA airport. In this regard, synergy and effective communication between the government, those responsible for implementing airport operations, and the local population in Kulon Progo are crucial.

Abstract

This study aims to unveil the role of religious leaders in the civil war efforts in South Sudan. This research employed the peacebuilding pyramid approach proposed by Lederach. The data were obtained through literature studies from books, scientific articles, documents, online media, and official reports published by government and non-government institutions relevant to peacebuilding in South Sudan. The article argues that religious leaders have played an important role in peacebuilding efforts in South Sudan since the conflict emerged in 2013. This study revealed several findings; first, at the top leadership, religious leaders act as mediators between the two conflicting parties, marked by the success of the 2018 RARCSS agreement. Second, middle-range leadership focuses on mobilizing the community and advocating for peace. Third, in the grassroots leadership section, religious leaders focus their attention on counseling and empowering communities affected by war both directly and indirectly. Through the mapping of the peacebuilding pyramid model, the presence of religious leaders in the community has positively influenced the peace process in South Sudan. This paper contributes to peace studies using Lederach’s peacebuilding pyramid model approach.

Abstract

The Rohingya, a Muslim minority group in Myanmar, have long suffered systematic discrimination, persecution, and violence that has culminated since 2017. The Myanmar government refuses to grant citizenship to the Rohingya, considering them illegal immigrants from Bangladesh, even though they have lived in Myanmar for generations. To highlight the complex relationship between media, geopolitics, and public opinion formation, this research seeks to analyze potential biases and contrasting narratives between Western, Middle Eastern, and Southeast Asian media opinions on Rohingya Muslims. To examine the portrayal of the Rohingya as “refugees”, “victims of violence”, and “rejects”, this study used NVIVO 14 by analyzing 120 news stories, consisting of 40 stories from Western media (CNN and BBC News), 40 from Middle Eastern media (Al Jazeera and Alarabiya News), and 40 from Southeast Asian media (Kompas and The Star). The results showed that Western media tended to frame the Rohingya as victims of violence, Middle Eastern media highlighted the plight of refugees in some countries, while Southeast Asian media highlighted the theme of resistance to their arrival. The analysis also found that the media tended to use neutral sentiments, although bias was detected in certain narrative and framing choices. This research contributes to discourse studies by emphasising the importance of understanding framing biases in shaping public opinion and suggests further analysis that includes levels of semiotics and critical discourse to reveal the depth of media narratives on the Rohingya.

Abstract

This article aims to analyze UNWOMEN's efforts toward the elimination of honor killings in Pakistan. This article used the conceptual framework of transnational advocacy networks introduced by Keck and Sikkink. The research method of this article uses qualitative research with data sources from books, news, journal articles, official websites, and other supporting reports related to research needs. This research found that, first, information politics is carried out by collecting and disseminating information to raise public awareness through anti-violence programs. Secondly, symbolic politics involves using symbols and stories to influence public opinion and policy through various campaigns and slogans on social media. Third, leverage politics was used to pressure the Pakistani government through documentary films and appointing public figures as Goodwill Ambassadors. Finally, accountability politics focuses on monitoring the honor-killing phenomenon by implementing the principles of CEDAW. Then, there is a decrease in the number of honor killings, although not too significant, but it is the beginning of efforts to overcome honor killings in Pakistan. UNWOMEN's efforts aim to provide support and encouragement to the government and Pakistani society to jointly commit to eliminating honor killing. This article makes an important contribution to the role of international organizations in combating human rights violations in Pakistan.

Abstract

In a dynamic political context, presidential speeches are crucial in shaping public perception and guiding policy. President Joko Widodo's latest speech on August 16, 2024 that was uploaded through the Presidential Secretariat's YouTube channel, has come under scrutiny for containing important elements relating to communication strategies and leadership legitimacy. This study aims to analyse the speech by exploring how Jokowi's distinctive rhetoric reflects his role in the political agenda. Using a qualitative approach and Van Dijk's critical discourse analysis technique, this study employs a socio-cognitive framework to guide the analysis. Lingual data was collected through free listening techniques, including transcription, observation, and research subject determination. Meanwhile, non-lingual data was obtained from credible news documents and analysed using hermeneutics and phenomenology methods. The results showed that Jokowi built his image as a responsive and effective leader through language that highlighted the successes and challenges of his leadership and built leadership authority by presenting himself as a skilful, strategic, and reality-based leader. This research contributes to understanding rhetorical strategies in political communication and leadership authority studies, with far-reaching implications for public perception and political dynamics.

Abstract

Islam is a religion that respects and upholds human values. Honor killing is a phenomenon that occurs in many countries, one of which is Pakistan. Therefore, this paper examines the practice of honour killing from the perspective of maqashid sharia. This paper uses a qualitative method with a literature study approach consisting of books, news, and journals relevant to this research. The findings in this study found that first, Pakistani society uses the tradition of honor killing as a legal tool for those who violate family honour. Second, the development of the practice of honor killing in Pakistan is due to cultural traditions and adapting from the laws of Qisas and Diyat. In the perspective of maqashid sharia, the practice of honor killing is contrary to the principle of al-Dharuriyat al-Khamsah, namely religion and soul. Through the principles in maqashid sharia, everything that contradicts the Qur'an and Sunnah is considered as behaviour that is not in accordance with Islamic sharia.

Abstract

Low access to education for women in South Sudan is caused by prolonged conflict, food crisis and lack of policy support. In this context, Malala Yousafzai's advocacy model inspires awareness of the importance of education for women. article explored the new advocacy model of education pioneered by Malala Yousafzai in South Sudan, based on her speeches from 2014 to 2023. The theoretical approach applied included the strategies of information politics, political symbols, political leverage, and accountability politics developed by Margareth E. Keck and Kathryn Sikkink. This research used a qualitative method with an in-depth literature review approach. This research uses NVivo 14 software, Anthiago.com, and the Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) method for data analysis. Text data was collected through Anthiago.com, then transcribed to facilitate the analysis process. The CDA approach examined the discourse structure in Malala Yousafzai's speech, identifying the advocacy strategies applied. The results revealed that Malala's empowerment model effectively motivated young people and stakeholders in South Sudan to participate actively in educational initiatives. However, NGOs operating in the region face significant challenges that hinder the effectiveness of their advocacy programmes. This article also emphasises the importance of educational ethics as a foundation for women-focused education programmes in South Sudan. Thus, this article offers a new perspective in understanding the women's empowerment movement and education in South Sudan, inspired by the advocacy principles championed by Malala Yousafzai. Provide a brief description of the phenomenon raised in this research. Revised

Abstract

Presidential elections in Turkey always attract global attention, as Turkey is a country that has significant influence in the international arena. This article aims to analyse national media framing sentiment in Indonesia towards Erdoğan in the 2023 Turkish presidential election. This article uses framing theory to analyse media coverage of the Turkish presidential election and the post-election period from March to August 2023. The author reads news from three Indonesian media outlets namely CNN Indonesia, BBC Indonesia, and CNBC Indonesia to see how they framed the news about Erdoğan. The purpose of this framing analysis was to determine whether the coverage of Erdoğan was positive, negative or neutral. The results of this study show that the highest percentage of national media framing in Indonesia is neutral. Erdoğan was often reported with negative sentiments, especially in relation to his controversial policy issues. News with positive sentiments towards Erdoğan was the lowest. In fact, after the election, news coverage tended to be neutral. This shows that national media in Indonesia generally endeavour to maintain objectivity and professionalism in news coverage, by balancing various perspectives and not leaning too much towards certain sentiments. This research fills a gap in international media studies by focusing on how Indonesian national media framed news coverage of Erdoğan during the 2023 Turkish presidential election. While many studies examine media framing in Western countries, this research provides new insights into media perspectives from developing countries such as Indonesia, which is important for understanding regional views on global leaders.
