Abstract

Following English rhetorical conventions in English academic texts, especially by non-native English authors, does not necessarily mean disregarding some rhetorical practices of their national language. Although investigating English RAs has largely been focused on how the textual structure of the section is written in English by native English speakers and non-native English speakers, there has a limited empirical attention so far related to the investigation of rhetorical differences between RA introductions written in English and those written in Indonesian. After a thorough genre-based investigation of 60 RAs published from 2019 to 2023 using the modified CARS model (Swales, 1990, 2004), this study has revealed that the use of each rhetorical style, including moves, steps, and patterns, in English and Indonesian RA introductions is different. The result indicates that although the moves and steps display a close affinity with the CARS model, we found higher use of Move 1, i.e., establishing a territory, in the language teaching RA introductions written in Indonesian than in English. On top of that, while international authors (IAs) established their niches adequately, Indonesian authors (Eng-FL) established their niches inadequately, seemingly due to the influence of their national language (Indonesian). Moreover, the Indonesian language not only affects the frequency of occurrence of the moves and steps but also contributes to the pattern deviations found in the English RA introductions written by the Indonesian authors. This study provides pedagogical implications for academic writing and insights for Indonesian authors to write English articles using English rhetorical styles.

Abstract

The use of language by specific characters in literary works is further explored in a linguistic framework known as role language (yakuwarigo). Yakuwarigo refers to a set of spoken language features that can be psychologically associated with particular character types, including traits related to age, gender, occupation, social status, appearance, and personality (Kinsui & Yamakido, 2015). One distinctive type of yakuwarigo in Japanese narratives is samurai role language, also referred to as bushi kotoba. This study aims to analyze the meaning and usage of yakuwarigo bushi kotoba as used by the character Kin'emon in the manga One Piece, applying the theoretical framework of Kinsui (2014). The research employs a qualitative descriptive method, with data collection techniques including observation and note-taking. The findings reveal 10 types of yakuwarigo bushi kotoba. Among these, the most frequently used type by Kin'emon is ~nu, with 40 occurrences, while the least frequently used are mairu and oo, each with 2 occurrences.

Abstract

This research is motivated by the study of perlocutionary speech acts, which are closely related to illocutionary utterances. The purpose of this study is to identify the types of illocution that trigger perlocutionary effects and to describe the effects produced. This research is qualitative and employs a descriptive method. The subject of the study is the anime Anohana by Mari Okada, while the data consists of utterances containing perlocutionary speech acts found within the anime. The results of the study indicate that the most dominant type of illocution in Anohana is the directive type, which is used to give commands or requests. Out of a total of 65 data points analyzed, 2 correspond to the declarative type, 20 to the representative type, 12 to the expressive type, 22 to the directive type, and 9 to the commissive type. Furthermore, the most frequently found perlocutionary effect is emotional, reflecting a strong influence on the interlocutor's feelings. The total identified perlocutionary effects include 29 emotional effects, 18 cognitive effects, and 18 behavioral effects. This study emphasizes the importance of understanding perlocutionary speech acts to communicate effectively. By understanding how illocutionary utterances trigger perlocutionary effects, speakers can be more careful in choosing words to ensure smooth communication without misunderstandings. This analysis contributes significantly to pragmatic studies, particularly in understanding the relationship between illocutionary utterances and perlocutionary effects in everyday communication.

The teacher competency-development training on the use of extensive reading/Tadoku has the potential to enhance teachers’ knowledge and motivation in applying this approach to support the improvement of students’ foreign-language literacy. This activity was carried out at SMA Nurul Ikhlas, Tanah Datar Regency, involving 14 foreign-language teachers. It aimed to provide participants with knowledge on how to implement extensive reading in foreign-language instruction, as well as how to utilize available print and digital learning resources. The training employed a method consisting of 70% theoretical exposition and 30% classroom demonstration in a Japanese-language class. Data were collected through four-point Likert-scale questionnaires and open-ended questions, and analyzed using descriptive quantitative methods and qualitative thematic analysis. The results indicate that the majority of participants experienced an increase in knowledge and insight related to the approach and found the materials relevant to the challenges faced in their classrooms. Most participants also reported feeling motivated and capable of applying the approach in their own teaching. It is concluded that the extensive reading/Tadoku training was effective in expanding teachers’ knowledge and understanding, thereby contributing to enhanced teacher competence in achieving foreign-language literacy goals
