Abstract

Indonesian waters have potential ornamental coral resources in South Sulawesi waters, especially in Karanrang Island, which still need to be optimally utilized by the fishing community. The main objective of this community service is to increase the understanding and skills of the community in managing coral transplantation in situ and caring for them in an environmentally friendly modular system aquarium based on re-circulation. Adopting the ABCD (Asset-Based Community Development) method, this approach begins with the identification of local assets, including the expertise and skills of the karanrang island community. Subsequently, capacity building is carried out by utilizing these assets, and the community is actively involved in the planning and implementation process. Results included increased community knowledge on technological innovations of modular circulation systems holding aquarium design at the household scale and post-harvesting of coral transplant farming products for holding in aquariums. This process contributed to the development of the local ornamental coral sector, empowered the community, and opened up product marketing opportunities at both local and international levels.

Abstract

The coastal area of Segeri sub-district, Pangkajene and Kepulauan Regency is a zone that is prone to natural phenomena of sea level rise. The impact received due to this phenomenon is something that needs to be studied to identify the level of coastal vulnerability and project changes in coastal vulnerability in the future. This study aims to calculate the coastal vulnerability index and project changes in vulnerability in the future due to changes in factors that affect coastal vulnerability. This research was conducted in August – December 2022 in Segeri District, namely in, Bone, Bawasalo and Bonto Matene Villages. The methods or approaches used in analyzing the data are: 1) analysis of coastal ecosystems and resources, 2) analysis of the physical and social characteristics of the community, 3) analysis of the vulnerability of the coastal environment. The Vulnerability Scoping Diagram (VSD) models places exposure, sensitivity and adaptive capacity as dimensions of vulnerability. The components of the exposure dimension consist of coastal dynamics, natural disturbances and population. The components of the sensitivity dimension are the characteristics of the coast, land use, and population settlements. The dimensions of adaptability include coastal habitats and marine conservation areas. Based on the scores of each parameter on the three dimensions, the coastal vulnerability index (IKP) in the three locations is in the range of IKP values of 7.96 - 9.59 which is included in the category of moderate vulnerability. Factors that are very influential on the IKP are the dimensions of sensitivity including: erosion, waves and tides caused by oceanographic factors so that if adaptation and mitigation efforts are not carried out, it is likely that in the next 5-10 years, the level of vulnerability can become high and even very high. Adaptation efforts that can be done are strengthening the coastal border area, planting and expanding mangrove trees in the coastal area of Segeri.

Abstract

The vulnerability of Makassar coast was measured using parameters of Coastal Vulnerability Index (CVI). CVIvalue was determined using geomorphology, shoreline change, coastal slope, mean wave height, mean tidalrange, and relative sea level change parameters. The Makassar coast was divided into a numbers of cells, eachwith the length of 1 km and width of 0.5 kminto the sea. CVI values werecalculated for each cell and the coastalvulnerability wereclassifiedinto five categories: very low - low - medium - high - very high. The results show thatthe coastline with high to very high vulnerability index are located at the southern part of Makassar, while thenorthern coastline generally have low to moderate vulnerability. The CVI parameters which contributed to highsusceptibilitywere the coastal slope and the shoreline change parameters. Abstract

The study aims to (1) analyse the technical characters of ship (design, principal dimension, and hydrostatic parameters) and the characteristics of wave (wave length) in connection with heaving motion, and (2) heaving amplitude and encounter frequency that influence the convenience of the ship's crew, its speed and safety. The study was conducted from April to June 2021 at Papandangan Island of Pangkep Regency, South Sulawesi. The data were analysed with numeric analysis, Attwood's formula and Lewis from based on Strip Theory. The study indicates that ships with larger number of characters and ships with a ratio of Lw/Ls = 1.0 (16.75 m, 16.85 m, and 16.95 m) or the wavelength that occurs equals to the length of the ships, the potential of the heaving motion to occur is feeble. Heaving amplitude and encounter frequency with a ratio of Lw/Ls = 1.5 (25.75 m, 25.85 m, and 25.95 m) or the wavelength is larger than the length of the ship. Will influence the convinience of the ship crews, the speed and safety of the ship.
