Abstract

Poverty is a problem that cannot yet be completely resolved, especially for Qur’an teachers in remote areas of Indonesian. Islam as rahmatan lil alamin can provide solutions to these problems by optimizing Islamic philanthropic instruments such as zakat, infaq, and sadaqah by ZIS institutions, one of which is LAZIS Nurul Falah of Surabaya in the Guru Ngaji Berdaya program. This research aims to determine the optimality of ZIS funds in the Guru Ngaji Berdaya program at LAZIS Nurul Falah of Surabaya with indicators of increasing income as a benchmark and optimization steps. The method used in this research is descriptive qualitative using interview method with two managers of LAZIS Nurul Falah of Surabaya (A1 - A2) and five Qur’an teachers (B1 - B5). The results of this research indicate that informants B1 - B5 experienced an increase in income so the empowerment of ZIS in the Guru Ngaji Berdaya program was optimal. The optimization steps that can be taken by LAZIS Nurul Falah of Surabaya in the Guru Ngaji Berdaya program are being more responsive, collaboration between LAZIS Nurul Falah branches, socialization to become expert teachers, and increasing assistance in the form of business capital.

Abstract

Purpose – This study aims to determine the factors that affect the intention of Muslim students to adopt mobile banking (m-banking) services at Islamic banks. Methodology – This study included a sample of 336 Muslim students employed by Islamic banks as respondents. The model incorporates 11 constructs: perceived risk (PR), perceived trust (PT), habit (HA), compatibility (CO), perceived usefulness (PU), perceived ease of use (PEU), effort expectancy (EE), performance expectancy (PE), facilitating conditions (FC), social influence (SI), and intention to adopt m-banking (IN). It is a combination of the unified theory of acceptance and use of technology (UTAUT) and the technology acceptance model (TAM). Findings – Muslim students’ intention to adopt mobile banking was positively influenced by perceived usefulness, performance expectancy, and facilitating conditions. Nevertheless, the intention of Muslim students to adopt mobile banking remains unaffected by factors such as perceived ease of use, effort expectancy, or social influence. Perceived ease of use and perceived trust affect perceived usefulness, while perceived risk, perceived risk, habit, and compatibility affect perceived ease of use. Originality – This study employs the TAM-UTAUT model, which consists of 11 components, to determine the intention of Muslim students towards using mobile banking.

Abstract

Waqf, in its conceptual essence, has the potential to enhance social and economic mobility, thus alleviating poverty. Nevertheless, the effective collection of waqf faces numerous challenges, particularly in adapting to the needs of Millennials and Generation Z. The objective of this research attempt is to examine how Islamic altruism moderates the impact of crucial determinants of cash waqf linked sukuk (CWLS) on fund collection. By employing the Structural Equation Model-Partial Least Squares (SEM-PLS) method, data were collected from 283 respondents belonging to the Indonesian millennial and Gen Z demographics via a self-structured questionnaire. The results emphasize that Islamic altruism does not play a substantial role in moderating the determinants of CWLS among the economic variables associated with Islam. Regarding domain-based economic decisions, individual contributions to CWLS are not reliably moderated by Islamic altruism. Despite adhering to the waqf principle, Islamic altruism, which entails the voluntary provision of assistance to others without personal gain, does not exert any influence on economic motivations for participating in CWLS. Furthermore, this research indicates that income level, religiosity, sharia financial literacy, and a strong inclination towards CWLS significantly influence the intention of Millennials and Generation Z to participate. Indonesia, being a Muslim-majority nation, could potentially witness significant progress in the field of financial waqf, specifically in the area of CWLS. The research's practical implications offer significant insights and direction for stakeholders, aiding in the formulation of efficacious policies and initiatives that promote CWLS fundraising among Millennials and Generation Z. This is novel research, and from the perspective of Islamic altruism theory, there has been a dearth of studies examining the critical factors that determine individual contribution in CWLS.

Abstract

This study aims to investigate the key antecedents influencing the revisit intentions of Muslim tourists to Batu City, East Java, Indonesia. Specifically, the research examines the impact of destination image, service quality, availability of halal facilities, and visitor income on the propensity to revisit, with visitor satisfaction introduced as an intervening variable. Utilizing 209 samples, the data is analyzed through Structural Equation Modeling-Partial Least Squares (SEM-PLS) to assess the direct and indirect relationships between the variables. The results demonstrate that destination image exerts a significant and positive effect on Muslim tourists' intention to revisit Batu City, while service quality, halal facilities, and visitor income show no statistically significant direct impact. However, all four factors—destination image, service quality, halal facilities, and visitor income collectively enhance visitor satisfaction, which in turn mediates their indirect influence on revisit intentions. This research offers valuable insights for local governments, tourism stakeholders, and academic circles by identifying factors crucial for improving the Muslim visitor experience. The findings have practical implications for enhancing the attractiveness of Batu City as a tourism destination, ultimately contributing to increased visitation rates among Muslim tourists.

Abstract

Introduction: Islamic stock is believed to be more stable and less risky than conventional stock due to specific screening based on Sharia principles, particularly during economic downturns. This research aims to investigate whether the Covid-19 outbreak caused a structural break in Indonesia's Islamic and conventional stock markets. Methods: This study covers the period from January 2007 to June 2022, divided into sub-periods before Covid-19 (January 2007 to February 2020) and during COVID-19 (March 2020 to June 2022). The study adopts the time series regression method to examine the predicting factors of Islamic and conventional stock indexes, followed by the application of the Chow Breakpoint Test method to determine whether there are structural changes in the Islamic and conventional stock markets due to Covid-19. Results: The results of this study suggest that, in comparison to the period preceding Covid-19, the Islamic stock index demonstrates heightened sensitivity to fluctuations in predicting factors during the pandemic. Additionally, there is an absence of any structural break observed in conventional indices. Consequently, Islamic stocks exhibit lower resistance during crisis periods than conventional stocks. Conclusion and suggestion: This finding prompts a comprehensive evaluation of the Sharia screening standards by policymakers to enhance the resilience of Islamic stocks during economic turmoil. Moreover, based on the results, it is suggested that investors cannot consider the Islamic stock index as a 'safe-haven' instrument during financial turmoil. The result of this research assist investors in adjusting their investment strategies more effectively, particularly in bearish market conditions.

Abstract

This study aims to examine the correlation between Islamic banks' profitability in Indonesia and the business cycle, which measured by composite leading Indicator (CLI). This study used several annual data covering the period from 2004-2018. This study utilizes Islamic banks profitability represent by Return on Asset (ROA) data as the dependent variable, CLI data as the dependent variable, and six control variables including Gross Domestic Product, Inflation, Financial to Deposit Ratio, Capital Adequacy Ratio, Non-Performing Finance, and Operating Costs Operating Income. This study adopted multiple regression analysis by using EViews 9.0 software. This study reveals that CLI has a positive and significant impact on ROA, which indicated that the expansion of business cycle activities would increase Islamic banks' profitability. Thus, this study suggests that Islamic bank should engage with the companies that relied on their business activities in the rill sector to boost their profitability. The limitation of this study is this study adopted Indonesian Islamic banks in general. Therefore, this study does not capture the correlation amongst the variables in the specific Islamic banks and region, which might be different from this result due to the differences in banks' internal conditions, culture, and the business cycle in the various region.
