Abstract

Abstract: This study aims to analyze the relationship of real exchange rate depreciation with trade balance and national output as economic indicators in floating exchange rate regime. This study also observes whether J-curve phenomenon exists in Indonesia or not. This study employs quarterly data from year 2000:1 to 2010:4 as representation of floating exchange rate regime. Vector Error Correction Model is applied as an analytical tool by emphasizing on impulse response function to find out the response of one variable as caused by any shock from other variables in the model and variance decomposition to trace the relative contribution of one variable toward the variability of other variables in the model. This study demonstrates that real exchange rate depreciation contributes positively toward trade balance in longer time horizon. Nevertheless, national output does not respond positively toward real exchange rate depreciation. Another empirical finding suggests that there is no strong evidence of J-Curve phenomenon during free floating exchange rate regime in Indonesia.

Abstract

The intention of regional government of Special Region of Yogyakarta to make south area as the front page of regional economic development has been initiated. As one subdistrict located in the south area of Gunungkidul regency, Tanjungsari subdistrict has several prospects on economy, tourism, and resources due to its strategic and direct position near the Hindia Ocean and Southern Traffic Lane. This study aims to mapping economic potential based upon leading sectors as identified by Location Quotient (LQ) method and Klassen typology which is employed to characterize the economic pattern and structure. Based on LQ analysis, both manufacturing and construction sectors are the leading sectors which need to develop in advance since they are the supporting sectors nowadays and in the future. Meanwhile, there exists a shift in economic pattern from developing region to underdeveloped region according to Klassen typology.

Abstract

Foreign tourism is indicated as one of the important instruments to encourage economic growth in several countries, including Indonesia. However, some studies only focus on the influence of tourist arrivals. Thus, the main objective of this study is to take a deeper look at the contribution of foreign tourism indicators to economic growth in Indonesia. Using panel data analysis from 33 countries between 2006 and 2016, this study applies three models: Pooled Least Square (PLS), Fixed Effect Model (FEM), and Random Effect Model (FEM). Based on the fixed-effect model, this study reveals that foreign tourist arrivals have a significant and positive effect on economic growth. However, other tourism indicators such as length of stay and expenditure of foreign tourists appear to have no contribution to economic growth. From these findings, it can be implied that the Indonesian government should not only attract more tourists to come but also design strategies to encourage tourists to spend more money and stay longer. This study also finds that depreciation of Indonesian currency and visa-free policies have a significant contribution to higher economic growth.

Abstract

In recent decades, the debate about the impacts of economic globalization through free trade has become attention to public policy. One important issue to address is related to environmental quality. It has been fifteen years since ASEAN-China Free Trade Agreement (ACFTA) was firstly signed and the total trade flows between ASEAN countries and China have grown around US$ 20 billion per year. Under the ACFTA commitment, tariff rates for exports from China to ASEAN countries have been reduced gradually and so have the tariff rates of ASEAN exports to China. This paper attempts to investigate whether expanded trade causes environmental damage in Indonesia. As the main largest economy in ASEAN, Indonesia has greatly contributed to the pollution released in ASEAN area. Using industrial pollution projection system developed by World Bank in 1995, it has been found that the estimated amounts of pollution have been increasing by approximately five times in Indonesia after fifteen years of ACFTA implementation. Even though the share of export of most polluting sectors has been decreasing, its contribution on the pollution intensity remains the largest. Since chemicals become the most polluting sector with its rapid growing in export to China, this sector needs to be considered in trade negotiations in order to lessen negative impacts of trade to the environment.

Abstract

Financial management literacy is a significant knowledge to assist individuals' financial condition. There are various factors influencing monetary management, including Information technology (IT). Thus, this study aims to investigate the role of IT affecting individual awareness of financial literacy in Indonesia with household characteristics as the controlling variable; the data are generated from the Indonesian Family Life Survey conducted in 2014. Probit and logit models signify that ITs and household characteristics positively and significantly affect financial literacy. In detail, handphones, televisions and newspapers, marital status, education level, and household income levels have a positive and significant influence on households' accessing financial knowledge. Furthermore, multinomial logit estimation used to compare three different levels of financial literacy (low, medium, and high), indicates that six out of nine variables significantly affect financial literacy at low level to high levels, whereas only four out of nine influence financial literacy from medium to a high level.

Abstract

Stunting has become a global priority in addressing health disparities among children. The study aims to investigate the autonomy of villages in reducing the prevalence of stunting in eastern Indonesia. The research data coverage is derived from sources with high credibility in Indonesia. The prevalence of stunting is obtained from the Indonesian Nutrition Status Survey by the Ministry of Health, while the Village Development Index is sourced from the Ministry of Villages. Panel data from 13 provinces in Eastern Indonesia for 2015-2022 are estimated using the Random Effect Model through the Generalized Least Squares method. The findings indicate that the Village Development Index significantly influences the reduction of stunting rates. This highlights the importance of local empowerment strategies in combating health disparities. Furthermore, the decrease in unmet Family Planning (FP) service needs, the decline in early marriages under 18 years, and the higher years of education contribute significantly to the reduction of stunting prevalence. This underscores the interconnection between social determinants and child health outcomes.

Abstract

During economic uncertainty following the COVID-19 pandemic, social assistance is vital for alleviating the economic burden on the poor and vulnerable to poverty, particularly those residing in island-based areas. The research aims to measure the performance of social assistance programs in the regional economy of the North Maluku Archipelago Province. The study employs Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) and Stochastic Frontier Analysis (SFA) to measure efficiency values, with input variables including social aid, unemployment, and inflation, while the output variable is poverty. The results reveal that social assistance is ineffective in reducing poverty. Several obstacles, including the minimal budget allocation, inaccuracies in identifying assistance recipients, and insufficient time for aid distribution are identified as primary causes of the inefficiency of social aid programs. Updating poverty data into one unified and integrated dataset is essential for the efficiency distribution of social assistance. Accurate targeting and timely distribution are the keys to the effectiveness of social assistance programs in reducing poverty.
