Abstract

This study aims to identify and categorize types of violations of Grice's maxims in the children's book Coraline, written by Neil Gaiman in 2008. A qualitative descriptive method was used to analyze the data, using the basic theories of Paul Grice (1989), White (1990), and George Yule (1996). The data consisted of 17 dialogues from the novel Coraline. Paul Grice identified that the cooperative principle has four maxims, namely quantity, quality, relation, and manner. This study focused on violations in the non-observance category. The researcher found that violations of the maxim of quantity were more dominant, followed by the maxims of manner, relation, and quality. This emphasizes that the novel Coraline has long-winded dialogues that contrast sharply with the lack of important information at times of increasing tension.

Abstract

This study examines the use of address terms and their relational functions in the dialogue between characters in Chapter 1 of Louisa May Alcott's novel Little Women using a pragmatic-sociolinguistic approach. Language in literary works not only functions as an aesthetic medium, but also as a medium for representing social relations between characters that are constructed through specific linguistic choices. The research data consists of 43 dialogues between characters that contain explicit and implicit forms of address. The data were analyzed qualitatively by using dialogic utterances as the unit of analysis, rather than isolated sentences, in order to capture the relational meaning in context. The results show that address terms in Little Women appear in various forms, such as kinship terms, personal names, affective forms of address, and forms of address without explicit lexical forms. These forms serve to build and negotiate emotional closeness, solidarity, family hierarchy, and social control between characters. The analysis also shows that relational functions are not static, but dynamic and dependent on the context of interaction and the development of relationships in the narrative plot. These findings confirm that literary dialogue can be treated as a valid social communication practice for linguistic analysis. This research contributes to the development of literary pragmatics by integrating the analysis of address terms and relational functions in the context of classic children's literature, which has been studied more from a thematic and ideological perspective.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze how the use of address terms represents and constructs power relations and social status in the children's storybook Alice's Adventures in Wonderland. Although previous studies have extensively discussed address terms in films, social communities, and digital interactions, most of them focus primarily on politeness and general social factors. This study argues that, in children's literary texts, address terms function not as neutral labels, but as ideological linguistic tools that normalize authority based on age and institutional hierarchy. This research employs a qualitative descriptive method with a sociolinguistic approach. The data consists of address terms found in dialogues between characters in the storybook, collected through reading and note-taking techniques. The data were analyzed by identifying the speaker, the addressee, the social hierarchy, the frequency of occurrence, and the type of social relationship represented, drawing on sociolinguistic theories of address terms, power relations, and age-based authority. The findings reveal that address terms such as your majesty, my dear, child, sir, and miss play an important role in shaping hierarchical relationships between adult and child characters. Address terms like your majesty and child explicitly reinforce institutional and age-based dominance, while my dear functions as an affectionate form that subtly maintains power imbalances. Meanwhile, the use of sir and miss reflects how child characters negotiate authority through politeness and formal recognition. These findings demonstrate that address terms in children's literature actively construct representations of power and social hierarchy rather than merely serving as markers of politeness.

Abstract

The household organic waste management often becomes a major challenge in society, especially in urban areas. The insufficient waste management system can cause environmental problems such as soil and water pollution that can threaten public health. This community service program aims to introduce and implement the overlay brick composting method as an innovative and sustainable solution in organic waste management. This method was chosen because it is simple, efficient, and can be adapted by communities with limited space and resources. The implementation of the program includes socialization, training, and assistance to the community in Perum Panorama Bumi Pasalakan 1, Cirebon Subdistrict. The results of the program showed a significant increase in community knowledge regarding the importance of organic waste management and the application of the overlay brick method. However, at this stage, changes are still limited to understanding, and have not created new habits in waste management. In conclusion, this program has succeeded in increasing public awareness and has the potential to encourage sustainable practices in the future with further assistance.
