Abstract

Culture in the dictionary of the Indonesian language can be understood as mind, reason and custom. Culture or culture that is preserved in descent is what is called a cultural heritage. Intangible cultural heritage is intangible, like concepts and technologies. And its nature can pass and disappear over time as the times evolve such as language, music, dance, ceremonies, and various other structured behaviors. American popular culture is all forms of thought, action, or belief that imply a mass product. The animated film Raya and the Last Dragon is an American popular cultural product that contains the cultural heritage of Indonesia, including batik, keris, and silat. American popular culture is perpetuating the indigenous cultural heritage of Indonesia through the screening of this animated film. The preservation of local culture is respected through the dissemination of films by taking elements of plot, background, figure and consolidation. The theory used is from Wellek and Warren that deals with the intrinsic elements of a literary work, and is supported by the American popular culture theory of Derry Mayendra.

Abstract

This research, entitled “The Influence of Celebrity Culture on the Identity Formation of the Main Character in the Novel ‘On a Night Like This’ by Lindsey Kelk,” aims to analyze the protagonist's identity transformation. The study has two primary objectives: first, to identify Fran Cooper's initial identity characteristics before her exposure to celebrity culture, and second, to examine how celebrity culture influences her identity formation through the mechanisms of social categorization and social comparison. Employing a qualitative method with descriptive analysis, the data was collected through close reading and selection of relevant excerpts from the novel. The theoretical framework of Social Identity Theory by Tajfel and Turner (1979) is applied to guide the analysis. The findings reveal that Fran's identity evolution occurs through three distinct stages: Social Categorization, where she defines her in-group and out-group; Social Identification, where she adopts the norms of her new group; and Social Comparison, where she measures herself against celebrities, leading to a significant shift in her self-perception. This research concludes that celebrity culture acts as a powerful catalyst in the reformation of Fran Cooper's identity.

Abstract

This study examines the portrayal of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) in Lily Bloom, the protagonist of Colleen Hoover’s novel It Ends With Us, through the theoretical lens of Gerald Davison’s Abnormal Psychology. A descriptive qualitative methodology was employed, with data collected through close reading and note-taking techniques. The analysis identifies three core PTSD symptom clusters experienced by the character: re-experiencing, avoidance, and hyperarousal. Furthermore, the study reveals trauma-induced impacts on emotional stability, relational dynamics, and life-altering decisions. The research also highlights four recovery mechanisms: writing as therapeutic processing, establishing a support network, assertive decision-making, and self-acceptance. This study underscores literature’s nuanced representation of PTSD and offers insights into psychologically resonant coping strategies within interpersonal trauma contexts. Future research is suggested to explore cinematic representations of PTSD in the film adaptation of It Ends With Us, with particular focus on non-verbal cues such as physical demeanor and facial expressions.

Abstract

This research investigates the themes of individual greed and capitalism as portrayed in Martin Scorsese’s film Killers of the Flower Moon (2023). The film chronicles the exploitation of the Osage people in the 1920s, following the discovery of oil on their land. The study aims to explore how greed reflects and perpetuates the capitalist system. Specifically, it analyzes the representation of capitalism in the film through both narrative and cinematic devices. To achieve this objective, a qualitative descriptive method was employed. The analysis included repeated viewings of the film, documentation through screenshots, and an extensive review of relevant literature. This approach was grounded in Marxist theory and the literary framework established by Wellek and Warren. The findings highlight illustration of the interconnection between individual greed and capitalist structures. These findings suggest that the film portrays capitalism not merely as an economic system but also as a mechanism of social exploitation. Within this context, the accumulation of wealth is depicted as being achieved through manipulation, violence, and systemic injustice against marginalized communities. The significance of this study lies in its contributions to the fields of literary and film studies. It illustrates how cinema can reflect and critique the workings of capitalism while offering valuable insights into issues of social inequality. This research serves as a critical reference point for future inquiries in Marxist literary criticism and cultural analysis, informing subsequent critical readings of films that tackle similar themes. Keywords:     Capitalism, Greed, Exploitation, Killers of the Flower Moon
