Abstract

this paper examines the issue of effective local leadership within santri in relation to the framework of building democratic governance at the local level in the community centre point. The author employs a qualitative research through case study. The main issue of this research is the political role of kiyai and bejingan in Bondowoso, East Java. This study indicate that the new trend, that is the socio-political power collaboration of the kiyais and the bejingans, does not have any positive implications for the development of democracy at the local level and for the critical awareness of society. In fact, with this trend, the hegemony and marginalization of the society’s political consciousness are relatively increasing. One of the major reasons is, that there are no longer two or more forces to control over each other.

Abstract

Fundamentalism is a religious ideology that emphasizes the existence of divinely revealed texts as they are. So that the term fundamentalist is equated with scripturalist because the religious rituals refer to the text rigidly. Etymologically the term fundamentalism in Islam has no equivalent, but in a historical perspective the movement is identical with the khawarij with its takfiri idiom. Indonesia is one of the countries where the ideology of fundamentalism has spread, infiltrating the domestic and public spaces of government and social organizations both personally and communally.

Abstract

Abstract

This article examines polarization within the Hadhrami Arab population in Bondowoso, East Java, especially in light of the rise of the 212 movement and the presidential election in 2019. During this time, the national political climate has become more tense. The issue of religion, which is drawn to political contestation, creates polarization among Muslims, including Arab Muslims. In Bondowoso, the polarization aligns with the different religious understanding backgrounds such as Sunni and Shi’a.  Nevertheless, polarization does not lead to social conflicts between them. Departing from this description, this study then focuses on two things. First, it seeks to reveal the views of Hadhrami Arabs on several national issues based on their respective religious backgrounds. Second, this study also reveals Arab intra-ethnic relations with different positions in addressing national issues. This research applied qualitative research with a case study approach to examine this focus. The study found that Arab perceptions of national issues varied according to their religious background. These perceptions correspond to their respective religious understanding. Second, although they differ in political and religious positions, the internal relations among Bondowoso Arabs are running normally without falling into violent conflict.

Abstract

This study aims to oversee the practice of gender injustice that affects rural women's lack of substantive political participation in Bondowoso Regency. During the Legislative General Election in 2014-2019 and 2019-2024, women's political participation was complimentary for the registration and administrative requirements rather than substantial involvement. This situation continues to happen even after the release of regulations that require the fulfillment of a quota of 30 percent of women’s representation in a political party. This study uses a qualitative approach. Furthermore, this study also uses a feminist approach. By using that feminist approach, this study aims to discover (1) how rural women in Bondowoso respond to political engagement and (2) how religious arguments are interpreted concerning the role of women in political engagement. This study found that (1) women’s involvement in politics is high in quantity rather than quality. Women’s political participation does not directly guarantee their active role in the political world. Instead of making a maximum contribution to the development of politics, women’s participation is stigmatized. (2) One circumstance that hinders women’s participation relates to the misogynistic interpretation of religious teachings in Bondowoso’s rural society. It refers to patriarchal domination in understanding the concept of leadership in Islam that eventually stigmatizes women’s involvement in politics.

Abstract

The NU congress that held in Jombang on 2015 entitled with Strengthening the Islam of the Archipelago for Indonesian and World Civilization. This theme can be captured as a confidence of NU’s people and muslim society in Indonesia that have applied on Islamic model. It can positively contribute to maintain civilization and world peace. Since then, Islam Nusantara discourse keep attracting the attention of Islamic reviewers in Indonesia. This debate appear because of some researcher take the different point of view. Far apart of the debate, the Islamic style of Indonesian society has proven to be able to maintain harmonious relations between Islam and nationality. The question of how Islam Nusantara should be understood is important to discuss, so it can be applied globally. Taking advantage of several literatures that pay attention to Indonesian Islam as the main reference, this study finds two main theses. First, in order to be replicated in a different space and time, Islam Nusantara must be positioned as an Islamic approach that rests on the strength of dialogue. As an approach, Islam Nusantara has similarities with the civilization approach. However, the Islamic Nusantara approach has richer features. Second, the Islamic Nusantara approach has the potential to be a counter-narrative of the clash of civilizations thesis. If the clash of civilizations does not promise anything for the future of Islamic and western relations apart from conflict, Islam Nusantara promises a constructive dialectic for both in realizing world peace.

Abstract

Abstract

Al-Ghazālī is one of the foremost thinkers in the tradition of Islamic thought. His life story has inspired many historians worldwide to document his journey. His interdisciplinary thinking has given rise to numerous works that explore his contributions from various scholarly perspectives. Although his ideas culminated in a philosophical product that diverged from the tradition of earlier philosophers, Al-Ghazālī could not entirely avoid employing philosophical logic in developing a philosophy of knowledge oriented towards unveiling the ultimate truth. This paper seeks to uncover Al-Ghazālī's philosophy of knowledge, particularly within the ontology and epistemology he developed. His philosophy of knowledge is rooted in a theological affirmation of God's oneness. Building upon this ontological foundation, Al-Ghazālī posits a single source of knowledge. Consequently, he opposes the compartmentalization of knowledge into distinct categories. Moreover, since knowledge emanates from the true substance of God, it attains a noble status in Al-Ghazālī's understanding. For Al-Ghazālī, authentic knowledge is what he terms al-ilmu al-yaqini, which can only be achieved through the illumination of the heart or mukasyafah. His concept of al-ilmu al-yaqini arises from his belief that the purpose of his scholarly journey is to uncover the substance of all realities or haqaiq al-umur. His epistemological perspective is characterized by a strong monism, emphasizing that all knowledge ultimately derives from and leads back to the singular divine source.
