Abstract

Abstract One of the environmental problems faced by pondok pesantren is the health and the environment problem arising from the plastics and dioxins waste from disposable sanitary napkins (DSN). This problem is mainly rooted from the woman’s low awareness of the scientific facts and side effects of DSN waste. This condition is indicated from the imbalance in power relations between men and women and media advertisement. Considering this cause, a number of menstrual product activisms emerge to support women in controlling their bodies. By utilising the Critical Discourse Analysis improved by Norman Fairclough (1992), this research observes two areas: (1) to unfold the agency of female figures in Pesantren Annuqayah in dealing with DSN issues and (2) to articulate their agency and activism from the point of view of ecofeminism. This research finds, first, that by banning DSN and issuing fatwa against DSN, the female figures in this pesantren negotiated to reproduce a new relation of power and domination between (a) sanitary industries and propagandas of media that prioritize capitalists’ interests and ignore long term reproductive health and environmental sustainability and (b) the patriarchal tradition in pesantren that subordinated women voices. Second, by insisting that women have control over their bodies and environmental sustainability, these women’s agency conforms to ecofeminist ethics that assert the interconnectedness between environmental and women’s issues.

Abstract

This study aims to oversee the practice of gender injustice that affects rural women's lack of substantive political participation in Bondowoso Regency. During the Legislative General Election in 2014-2019 and 2019-2024, women's political participation was complimentary for the registration and administrative requirements rather than substantial involvement. This situation continues to happen even after the release of regulations that require the fulfillment of a quota of 30 percent of women’s representation in a political party. This study uses a qualitative approach. Furthermore, this study also uses a feminist approach. By using that feminist approach, this study aims to discover (1) how rural women in Bondowoso respond to political engagement and (2) how religious arguments are interpreted concerning the role of women in political engagement. This study found that (1) women’s involvement in politics is high in quantity rather than quality. Women’s political participation does not directly guarantee their active role in the political world. Instead of making a maximum contribution to the development of politics, women’s participation is stigmatized. (2) One circumstance that hinders women’s participation relates to the misogynistic interpretation of religious teachings in Bondowoso’s rural society. It refers to patriarchal domination in understanding the concept of leadership in Islam that eventually stigmatizes women’s involvement in politics.

Abstract

This article explores the contested concepts of righteous women and submission in Islamic literature, and how Muslim women perceive, interpret, and embody these ideals in daily life. Combining textual analysis with field research, this study investigates women's agency within Islamic frameworks, particularly how religious texts are internalized, contested, or reinterpreted. Primary sources include classical and contemporary tafsir and hadith literature, alongside key works on gender and women’s agency in Islam. Additionally, semi-structured interviews were conducted with ten Muslim women from diverse educational and socio-cultural backgrounds to capture a range of lived experiences. The findings reveal that classical to modern mufassirun predominantly associate women's righteousness with obedience, primarily to God and to husbands, especially in the marriage context. In contrast, contemporary scholarship increasingly frames righteousness as a personal moral and ethical responsibility beyond marital obedience. The interviews reflect this interpretive variation: while some Muslim women uphold traditional views, others prioritize intellectual autonomy, spiritual depth, and egalitarian relationships in the household. The study also identifies varied expressions of women's agency, including devotional commitment, subtle resistance, and strategic engagement with religious norms. Amid ongoing debates over gender roles in Islam, this article underscores the need for a nuanced understanding of how Muslim women actively negotiate religious texts within evolving socio-cultural contexts. It contributes to broader discourses on Islamic feminism, gender justice, and interpretive authority. It also offers fresh insights into the dynamic interface between scripture, tradition, and lived female piety.

Abstract

The Settlement of Domestic Violence Cases (KDRT) Based On Islamic Values and Local Wisdom. This research explores the conflict resolution of domestic violence (KDRT) cases based on Islamic values and local wisdom. The aim is to find alternatives to solving legal problems without having to go through legal channels (litigation). Although the Government has passed Law No. 23/2004 aimed at suppressing cases of domestic violence, the regulation is still not effective in overcoming the problem. It is proven that such cases still appear in public spaces and stick out like an iceberg. The main factor causing the difficulties was due to the kinship between the victim and the perpetrator. After examining both ”al-sulh”, the methodology for resolving conflicts based on Islamic values, and “Musyawarah”, the method based on local wisdom, this research finds out that the above-two alternative solutions have several advantages compared to legal channels. The two models of the resolution, therefore, can be used as alternatives for resolving conflicts in the household, especially those accompanied by violence.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the implementation of Wordwall as a learning medium to improve the learning motivation of fourth-grade students in the Arabic language subject at MI Darus Sa’adah. Based on field data, it was found that students faced difficulties in learning Arabic because it is a foreign language, which consequently led to low motivation and enthusiasm for learning. This research employed a qualitative descriptive approach with a focus on the theme of Indonesian cultural diversity, delivered through interactive activities using Wordwall. The results revealed that the use of Wordwall significantly influenced students’ engagement and enthusiasm. Before the implementation, only six students actively participated in the learning process; after using Wordwall, 14 students showed increased motivation and enthusiasm for learning. Students’ level of motivation improved, as evidenced by their enthusiasm during the learning activities and their mastery of the material at the end of the lesson. This study highlights two crucial stages in the implementation process: (1) the planning stage, which includes analyzing students’ needs and designing appropriate learning media for Arabic lessons, and (2) the classroom implementation stage, where the game-based and interactive features of Wordwall encouraged active participation and fostered a positive learning environment. These findings indicate that Wordwall is an effective and feasible learning medium to enhance students’ motivation in learning Arabic at the madrasah ibtidaiyah level.

Abstract

Male ulama have significantly influenced the feminist movement in Indonesia by providing religious interpretations that are attuned to women's experiences and actively addressing injustices faced by women. This research delves into the transformative journeys of four male ulama as they adopted pro-feminist stances and engaged with the feminist movement. Utilizing a phenomenological approach and in-depth interviews for data collection, the study focuses on how these ulama promote gender justice and embrace feminist principles. The findings reveal that the journey to pro-feminism for these ulama involves multiple phases: recognizing sensitizing events, cultivating feminist consciousness, reinforcing feminist values, and taking tangible actions against women's injustices. In their advocacy for gender justice, these ulama have crafted a methodology for interpreting religious texts that centers women's experiences as crucial to understanding faith. This interpretative approach not only supports a gender-just mindset but also seeks to integrate gender justice principles into daily practices. Ultimately, the study illustrates the essential roles male ulama play in fostering a pro-feminist environment and encouraging societal change regarding gender issues in Indonesia.
