Abstract

The Sādah Bā ‘Alawiyyah, as part of the Hadhrami Arab diaspora, has historically contributed to the dissemination of Islam in Indonesia. However, limited scholarly attention has been given to how this community internally manages sectarian differences, particularly between Sunni and Shia members. This study aims to fill this gap by investigating how the Sādah Bā ‘Alawiyyah community in Bondowoso navigates Sunni–Shia tensions through everyday peacebuilding practices. Employing a qualitative grounded theory approach, data were collected via in-depth interviews, participant observation, and document analysis. The study explores three key issues: the structural dynamics of the Hadhrami Arab community in Bondowoso, the interactional patterns between Sunni and Shia Sadah in daily life, and the socio-cultural mechanisms that prevent conflict escalation. Findings reveal that historical memory, intergenerational kinship ties, and ritual continuity function as core resources for building trust and sustaining peaceful coexistence. Rather than relying on formal institutions, the community resolves tensions through informal, everyday strategies that foster mutual respect and cohesion. Conceptually, the study contributes to diaspora and peace studies by introducing the notion of “family-based everyday peace”, demonstrating that Hadhrami identity is negotiated not merely through religious authority or social status, but through practical, lived strategies for conflict mitigation within plural settings.

Abstract

This study investigates the political dynamics of pesantren alumni from three influential pesantrens in East Java’s region: Pesantren Nurul Jadid Probolinggo, Pesantren Sidogiri Pasuruan, and Pesantren Salafiyah Syafi’iyah Situbondo, with fieldwork conducted in Bondowoso and Jember. Focusing on the 2024 presidential election, this research explores two key issues: the emergence of polarization among alumni groups and their adoption of political marketing strategies. Using a qualitative approach, the study finds that polarization intensified in line with divergent political preferences among the founding families of the parent pesantren. This division occurred not only across alumni networks of different pesantren origins but also within alumni of the same alma mater. The findings also show that each alumni group employed political marketing principles, combining push and pull strategies, to mobilize support and strengthen voter engagement for their preferred presidential candidate.

Abstract

This study examines how Chinese Muslims in Jember, Indonesia, negotiate their unique position as an ethnic minority within a religious majority through the lens of fiqh al-siyasah (Islamic political jurisprudence). Using a qualitative approach that combines in-depth interviews with community leaders, participant observation, and documentary analysis, the research reveals three main patterns of political expression: a response of avoidance justified by the principle of preventing means to ends, an adaptive response rooted in expediency through strategic alignment with the Nahdlatul Ulama and limited individual participation. At the socio-religious level, Chinese Muslims have devised a complex dual-identity strategy that preserves Chinese cultural authenticity and Islamic orthodoxy through the creative application of the principles of custom, the distinction between custom and worship, and the architectural-ritual synthesis embodied in the Muhammad Cheng Ho Mosque. Their positions on contemporary theological-political issues—the Ahok blasphemy case, the call for a caliphate, fundamentalist movements, and Indonesian democracy—demonstrate a sophisticated application of political jurisprudence concepts, including siyasah syar’iyah, maqasid al-sharia, istihsan and istishlah. The study contributes theoretically by expanding fiqh siyasah to include ‘composite minorities’—ethnic minorities within religious majorities—and practically by showing how classical fiqh principles can provide a flexible yet sound framework for Muslim minorities navigating complex pluralistic contexts. The findings confirm that Islamic jurisprudence is inherently dynamic and contextual (rulings change with changing circumstances) and that creative cultural-religious synthesis can achieve social integration without compromising doctrinal fundamentals.

Abstract

This study traces the trajectory of political conflict among local kiai in Bondowoso as a significant phenomenon within the dynamics of religious authority–based local politics. The research background departs from the increasing involvement of kiai in practical politics, which has triggered social fragmentation at the pesantren community level. Academically, this study highlights that religious authority is not singular in nature but is negotiated through patronage relations, pesantren networks, and political party affiliations. The research employs a qualitative approach using field study methods through observation and in-depth interviews with kiai and their followers. The findings show that political conflict among kiai is driven by differences in party preferences, pesantren alma mater backgrounds, patronage toward respected kiai figures, and political kinship ties. These conflicts emerge in latent or manifest forms, both internal and inter-party, and generate mass responses divided between emotional and rational patterns. This study confirms that political conflict among kiai reflects not only a contestation of power but also a process of redefining religious authority within Indonesian local politics.

Abstract

Women's leadership in politics is still a clash of ideas among the scholars’. Some say there are haram (forbidden) and vice versa can say. If this I analyzed further, take note that the main problem actually arises because the interpretation of religious doctrine carried out at shallow So that finally, was born a misoginis interpretation of religious texts, which in this context is the Hadith texts.

Abstract

The public and political role of Muslim women in Indonesia has been on the increase in recent years. This is due family connections, gender equality, and religious piety. This article particularly highlights the political participation of Bu Nyai, Muslim personalities with pesantren backgrounds. This paper contends that their motive is their aspiration to advocate women's rights, which is often ignored by male-politicians. The idea that “only women understand women” represents another reason why these Bu Nyai compete in elections for public office. The Bu Nyai relies much on defending values and norms rather than on competence or experience. The wisdom behind this is the fact that Indonesian politics is not always about idea, as it is about sense and positive image. These are the so-called social and spiritual capitals that this paper tries to explore by referring to three Bu Nyai in East Java and their political aspiration in upholding norms by defending women. The rise of these Bu Nyai and their prominence in local elections is a direct testimony that Indonesian politics is not patriarchal. Their activism is an automatic repudiation of neo-liberal thesis that in major Muslim societies, women are politically marginalized.

Abstract

Fundamentalism is a religious ideology that emphasizes the existence of divinely revealed texts as they are. So that the term fundamentalist is equated with scripturalist because the religious rituals refer to the text rigidly. Etymologically the term fundamentalism in Islam has no equivalent, but in a historical perspective the movement is identical with the khawarij with its takfiri idiom. Indonesia is one of the countries where the ideology of fundamentalism has spread, infiltrating the domestic and public spaces of government and social organizations both personally and communally.
