Abstract

Blogs can be deemed as an alternative digital media which have been strategically employed for business communication. One of the realizations is product blogs. As startups, which are identically linked to digital media, have been skyrocketing in number, product blogs play an integral role to accommodate their business communication. In writing an article for the product blogs, startups often open an internship vacancy for, among others, polytechnic students majoring English for business communication. However, generic structure of a product blog article is quite different from academic essays. There is a need to equip the students with adequate product blog article writing skills before they embark on internship. This study aims at empirically delving into generic structure of successful Indonesian startups’ product blogs. To achieve the aim, this research employed corpus-based research methodology. There were 33.430 tokens of product blogs from two unicorn startups. The framework for analysis was adapted from Askehave and Nielsen (2005). The findings show that there were three moves in the corpus, namely contextualizing product, detailing product, and soliciting response. Each move consisted of steps which were categorized into reading mode and navigating mode. The findings lead to pedagogical implications—inculcating the moves to polytechnic students majoring English for business communication—as an attempt to link and match between vocational pedagogy and industry requirements.

Abstract

This community service is intended to accommodate the needs of the hotel in improving English language skills in the hospitality sector for its employees, especially for waiters and waitresses, through English language training. The participants of this training were waiters and waitresses from The Shalimar Boutique Hotel, Malang. This activity is expected to be able to improve the quality of human resources at the Shalimar Hotel by enhancing the English skills of the waiters and waitresses, which will then be implemented to provide services and assist restaurant visitors and hotel guests from outside Indonesia. This activity was carried out in five stages, namely planning (to determine the number of participants who were involved and the materials needed in training), coordination with the hotel (to ensure that the plans made are in accordance with their needs), preparation of teaching materials/materials, implementation of training, and evaluation (providing questionnaires to training participants regarding the implementation and training materials).

Abstract

Kegiatan pengabdian kepada masyarakat ini dilaksanakan di Desa Tulus Besar, Kecamatan Tumpang, Kabupaten Malang untuk mendukung pengelolaan daya tarik wisata seni budaya dan pengembangan potensi desa wisata melalui pelibatan pegiat seni lokal, khususnya seni Bantengan. Kegiatan ini bertujuan meningkatkan pengetahuan dan kemampuan masyarakat dalam pengelolaan event kesenian serta pengembangan desa wisata guna meningkatkan kunjungan wisatawan domestik maupun mancanegara sekaligus melestarikan seni dan budaya daerah. Metode pelaksanaan menggunakan pendekatan service learning melalui tujuh tahapan, yaitu persiapan, perencanaan dan koordinasi dengan pihak desa serta pelaku wisata, sosialisasi, pelatihan, pendampingan, monitoring dan evaluasi, serta dokumentasi dan publikasi. Pendekatan ini menekankan kolaborasi antara tim pengabdian dan masyarakat dalam proses pembelajaran, pendampingan, serta penerapan pengetahuan secara langsung di lapangan. Hasil kegiatan menunjukkan adanya peningkatan pemahaman peserta mengenai pengelolaan daya tarik wisata budaya, penyelenggaraan event kesenian, serta pentingnya partisipasi masyarakat dalam pengembangan desa wisata berkelanjutan di Desa Tulus Besar. Peningkatan tersebut terlihat dari hasil pre-test pengetahuan mitra terhadap pengelolaan event kesenian bantengan sebesar 79% dan hasil post-test sebesar 95% setelah dilakukan kegiatan pendampingan pengelolaan event kesenian bantengan di desa Tulus Besar.
