Abstract

This research aims to see the romanticism contained in the poem and uses descriptive qualitative as the method. The results of this research are characteristics from the romantic era, which are nature, freedom, supernatural, and gothic. The choice of supernatural and gothic themes came from Coleridge's childhood memories of folk oral traditions as a child; "Gothic Ballads." Childhood memories were also chosen because of the saturation at that time, which only discussed something empirical and did not believe in something that could not be proven. This poem shows that the world as a strange experience is an important relationship between humans and their feelings. It offers the spirit and soul as weapons against the Enlightenment era, which is full of science and rationalism. This poem becomes one of the ways to express the freedom of thought. This spirit also makes “Lyrical Ballads” as the opening door of the romantic era.

Abstract

This research is motivated by the lack of appreciation to explore the values of the Minangkabau story, even though the report also conveys a religious message. By using the close reading technique, this paper interprets the various moral messages contained in 11 Minangkabau stories, namely Anak Mudo, Limau Anyuik, The Honest Child, Batu Manangih, Boncah Tangkuluak, Carito Bukik Balacan, Kuciang jo Harimau, Rumah Raksasa, Urang Kayo Sampilik, Kawan nan Setia,, and Tupai jo Limbek. From the analysis of this story, moral messages were found, such as honesty, respect for mothers, humility, and mutual help. This morality is seen to be by Islamic character, based on the two measuring tools Gus Dur regarding the principle/consistency and sincerity of the message content, and also based on the reality of the Minangkabau people's customs intertwined with Islam. This story articulates the Minangkabau community's ability to cultivate themselves by adhering to traditions and Islam. Keywords: Morality, Value, Message, Minangkabau Story, Islam

Abstract

Mastering a foreign language requires not only linguistic skills but also the development of intercultural competence. This study aims to analyze the use of the German children's novel entitled Emil und die Detektive by Erich Kästner as a medium for developing students' intercultural competence in German language learning in Indonesia. This study uses a descriptive qualitative approach with thematic analysis of literary works. Data in the form of narratives, dialogues, and character actions were collected through listening and note-taking, then analyzed using literary analysis with reference to Michael Byram's Intercultural Communicative Competence (ICC) framework. Data validity was strengthened through triangulation of sources and theories. The results of the study indicate that the novel Emil und die Detektive embodies values of intercultural understanding, such as independence, solidarity, honesty, vigilance, and equal relations between children and adults. These values have the potential to be integrated into German language learning through discussion activities, interpretive writing, and literary appreciation. Therefore, language learning is not only oriented towards linguistic mastery but also contributes to the development of empathy, interpretation skills, cross-cultural interaction, and critical cultural awareness in line with Byram's ICC model.

Abstract

This study explores the construction of meaning through verbal and non-verbal signs in the Dior Sauvage advertisement featuring Johnny Depp. The research is grounded in Roland Barthes’ semiotic framework, which examines meaning at the levels of denotation, connotation, and myth. The study addresses how linguistic and visual elements within the advertisement construct and reinforce representations of masculinity. Employing a qualitative descriptive method, the data were collected from selected scenes focusing on verbal signs, such as brand naming and lexical choices, as well as non-verbal signs, including color, setting, costume, and body language. The findings reveal that the advertisement constructs masculinity through signs associated with strength, mystery, freedom, and independence. At the mythological level, the advertisement reinforces an ideological representation of ideal masculinity as dominant, emotionally restrained, and deeply connected to nature. The study concludes that meaning in advertising is not naturally inherent but socially and culturally produced through interconnected systems of signs that shape audience perceptions and ideological understanding.
