Abstract

FOOD CONSUMPTION BEHAVIOR OF ELEMENTARY SCHOOL PUPILS PARTICIPATING IN "PMT-AS" PROGRAM AT THE CIHEULEUT AND PASIR GAOK VILLAGE DISTRICT OF BOGOR.Objective: To collect informations regarding actual food consumption behaviour of the pupils, i.e. to develop right message to improve food consumption and nutrition status of the pupils.Results: Most of the pupils have not been applying good and acceptable food consumption behavior, i.e. quantitatively and qualitatively as well; their dietary food consumption patterns relatively monotoneous, vegetables are consumted very limited and also protein sources are less varieties. Snack foods which are usually consumed at school are less varieties and relatively unsafe.Conclusions: There are important messages developed to improve food consumption and nutrition status of the pupils, i.e. eat breakfast before go to school, have complete meal 2-3 times a day and consumed vegetables every day.Key Words: food consumption behavior, school suplementary feeding program (PMT-AS), nutrition education, elementary school pupils

Abstract

KNOWLEDGE AND ATIITUDES TOWARD CHILDHOOD OBESITY AMONG MOTHERS OF 9-10 YEARS OLD ELEMENTARY SCHOOL CHILDREN IN BANDUNG CITYBackground: Obesity is a major contributor for many degenerative diseases. In some populations, metabolic consequences of weight gain were onset as moderate overweight. There is a consistent trend of overweight and obesity in Indonesia and this was tendend to increase in younger adults and children. Objectives: This research aimed to explore and analyze the knowledge and attitudes in revand to childhood obesity among mothers of the Elementary School children (ESC). Methods: One hundred and twelve mothers who owned children aged 9-10 years who studied at the favorites ESC in Bandung City, West Java Province, involved in a cross-sectional study. The ESC was purposively selected, based on observation and data from the provincial government's education office showed that have many overweight students. Results: Mothers of the ESC who haved complete knowledge about obesity (3.6%). The mothers were lack of knowledge about obesity problem (63.4%). Most of the mothers felt unhappy or not proud if they have obese children (94.6%). Many mothers of the ESC felt not proud if their children were obese shown that they had a positive attitude if they got an appropriate information.Conclusions: Socialization of family nutrition awareness should be needed,with this way,every family, especially parents, is more care on childhood nutrition among others how to assess the children's nutritionalstatus and how to monitor their growth status. Childhood obesity could be prevented as early as possible if the nutrition awareness among parents is achieved.Keywords: childhood obesity, knowledge and attitudes, mother, Elementary School children

Abstract

POSITIVE FACTORS TO INCREASE THE POTENTIAL OF CADRE'S INTEGRATED SERVICES POST IN ORDER TO ACHIEVE THE NUTRITION AWARENESS FAMILY.Background: One of indicators of the nutrition awareness family (KADARZI) is family member's attendance for health and growth monitoring to POSYANDU, especially children aged 1-5 years (8ALITA) and pregnant women. The successful of BALITA growth monitoring depends on the cadre ability to conduct the POSYANDU activities, among others.Objectives: The objective of this study is to describe the positive factors related to POSYANDU cadre ability to increase the family nutrition awareness regarding BALITA growth monitoring.Methods: Cross­ sectional survey was used in this study. The study was conducted in 16 POSYANDU of the Kampar and Pelalawan Districts, Riau Province, and covered 58 cadres as respondents. Interview with respondents was used to collect data using a questionnaire.Results: All cadres are women and most of them are 21-40 of age about 50 percent that having high school education, and almost all of respondents work as housekeeper. Motivation to be cadres is mainly for helping the community member or village development. About 53 percent of cadres had never received training, and the rest of cadres had received training only once although they have been a cadre for more than two years. Besides, most of the POSYANDU has no materials or booklets for community education. About 71 percent cadres have no booklet and about 52 percent have never given information to the community because they have no knowledge in nutrition counseling. Cadre knowledge in growth curve interpretation in the growth chart is very low; it was only nine percent of cadre that able to interpret growth curve correctly. Only two percent cadre knows that the weight change in monthly weighing should be told to mother in nutrition counseling. In order to increase nutrition awareness family, particularly in growth monitoring, the POSYANDU should be revitailzed by improving the cadre ability in growth graph interpretation as well as growth monitoring, nutrition counseling, and provide means of communication in POSYANDU activities.Keywords: POSYANDU cadre, nutrition awareness family, POSYANDU revitalization

Abstract

DEVELOPMENT OF NUTRITIONAL MESSAGES IN THE DIETARY GUIDELINES FOR INDONESIANS THAT MORE PRACTICAL TO BE USED BY FIELD NUTRITION STAFFS.Background: Nutritional messages in the Dietary Guidelines should be simple and relatively few in numbers to obtain maximum awareness and understanding among the users. Some observational studies indicated that nutritional messages of the Dietary Guidelines for Indonesians (PUGS) were considered complex so they were difficult for 'field' nutrition staffs to understand them.Objectives: The purpose of this study is to explore and modify the nutritional messages that are considered complex by 'field' nutrition staffs to become the understandable and practical nutritional messages.Methods: A capacity building method has been developed to explore and modify the nutritional messages that are considered complex. This process involved seven participants: four 'field' nutrition staffs (two PUSKESMAS nutrition staffs from Medan City and two from Deli Serdang District) and three nutrition staffs from the Health Office of Medan City and Deli Serdang District, North Sumatera Province. Nutritional messages were modified based on the inputs of capacity building forum.Results: The nutritional messages of number 2-3-4 in PUGS were difficult messages to be understood by nutrition staffs. The modified 2-3-4 messages by nutrition staffs were still somewhat difficult for them. The final result was the ten modified nutritional messages which were, according to nutrition staffs, more understandable and practical.Keywords: Nutritional messages, Dietary Guidelines for Indonesians (PUGS), nutrition staffs

Abstract

The availability of weight and height data based on age group of Indonesian population are needed to assess the appropriate nutrition intake in every gender and age group. However, threre are many problems during determining recommended dietary allowances (RDA) for Indonesians due to un intregated available aquired data in a survey. This analyced data aimed to present  aquired information for arranging RDA base on gender and age group. Weight and height data were axtracted from baseline health survey of Indonesia (Riskesdas) 2013. The weight and height data included in the analyses were individu should have good nutritional status, free from chronic diseases and came from wealth economic status. The median of weight and  of height were compare to recommended weight and height in RDA 2012 in same gender and same age group. Results show that median weight and height were looked lower than RDA one, the results can be considered on determining of the coming RDA for Indonesian. Tersedianya data berat badan dan tinggi badan menurut kelompok umur pada penduduk Indonesia bermanfaat untuk menilai asupan gizi yang tepat pada setiap kelompok umur dan jenis kelamin. Namun demikian dalam penetapan AKG (Angka Kecukupan Gizi) selama ini masih terkendala karena beberapa informasi yang diperlukan ketersediannya terbatas, seperti data berat badan, tinggi badan, serta asupan zat gizi belum dilakukan dalam suatu survei yang terintegrasi. Analisis ini bertujuan untuk mendapatkan informasi tentang nilai median berat badan dan tinggi badan penduduk Indonesia menurut kelompok umur berdasarkan data Riskesdas 2013 dan membandingkan dengan median tinggi badan dan berat badan yang digunakan dalam AKG 2012. Data yang digunakan dalam analisis ini adalah data berat badan dan tinggi badan individu yang memiliki tingkat soaial ekonomi baik, status gizi normal dan tidak menderita penyakit kronis. Hasil analisis menunjukkan bahwa median berat badan dan tinggi badan pada jenis kelamin yang sama dan kelompok umur yang sama tampak lebih rendah dibandingkan dengan  median berat badan dan tinggi badan dari setiap kelompok umur dalam AKG  2012. Dengan diperolehnya angka median berat badan dan tinggi badan menurut kelompok umur dan jenis kelamin diharapkan dapat digunakan sebagai bahan pertimbangan dalam menentukan  AKG  yang akan datang.

Abstract

Effect of School-Based Educational Interventions On The Level of Obesity Prevention's Knowledge Among 9-10 Year-Old Children In Bandung City.Background: The prevalence of obesity in Indonesia shows an increasing trend. A survey among adults in 12 major cities in Indonesia shows the prevalence of obesity in adult is more then 20%. The prevalence among school age children is 6.0%. Obesity in childhood is known to be an independent risk factor for adult obesity.Objectives: To assess the effect of school-based educational intervention on the level of obesity prevention's knowledge, among elementary school-aged children.Methods: This study having non-control group pre- and post-test design was based in three Bandung's Elementary Schools in 112 children aged 9 to 10 years. The three schools were selected from six Bandung's Elementary Schools having both high socio-economic status and more obese children based on the Office of Basic Education. The intervention schools drawn from SDN M5 included 39 children gave the Obesity Prevention's booklet by their teacher for their parent (Group A), SD P1 36 children gave the booklet for themselves (Group B), and SD P2 37 children gave the booklet for their parent and themselves (Group C). All children were measured their weight and height and were interviewed using structured questionnaire that covered their characteristics and the five topics about obesity (definition, causes, consequences, how to identify, and how to weight control). Data were analyzed descriptively and tested by Chi-square and t-tests.Results: At baseline, most of children (>90%) had less of knowledge in the obesity prevention. After intervention, only the Group B & C had significantly increase in the knowledge (p<0.05). However, between the two groups, the Group C was more effective in increasing the knowledge.Conclusion: Educational intervention giving the Obesity Prevention's booklet by teacher to school children and their parents was more effective in increasing the knowledge of obesity prevention's.Keywords: obesity prevention, school-aged children, school-based, educational-intervention, parent.
