Abstract

The construction of a private farm in Salatiga has made Salatiga magnet for immigrants from outside the city. Population growth has forced the government to provide land for settlement. These immigrants are usually Europeans who work on farms. The land at Toentangscheweg, previously used for coffee farming, has been converted into exclusive settlement for the European elite Toentangscheweg has been transformed into an area with complete facilities and beautiful surroundings with strong and majestic European architectural buildings. The purpose of this research is to determine the development of European settlements in Salatiga. The study uses historical research methods, with stages; heuristic, criticism, interpretation, and historiography. The results of this study show that European settlements have many differences from other inhabitants, especially indigenous people. The life of the Europeans in Toentangscheweg depicts their caste higher than that of the natives. The difference can be seen in housing, vehicles, lifestyles, education, and so on.

Abstract

The study examined the tradition of Jamu in Nguter District, Sukoharjo Regency, Central Java, which has faced intense competition with modern health products. The community practiced Jamu as part of traditional medicine passed down through generations; however, the tradition has encountered significant challenges in maintaining its existence. The study aimed to identify the obstacles faced by traditional Jamu entrepreneurs and evaluate the efforts made to address these issues. Researchers collected data using historiographic methods, including literature review, field observations, and interviews with Jamu entrepreneurs and consumers. The results of the study showed that Jamu entrepreneurs faced limitations in raw material, inconsistency in quality, and strict licensing regulations. Additionally, Jamu entrepreneurs struggled to compete with modern health product, which were more practical and popular. The conclusion of the study stated that the collaboration between Jamu entrepreneurs and the local government had successfully raised public awareness about the importance of preserving Jamu traditions. The jamu tradition has great potential to support the green economy by relying on sustainable and environmentally friendly natural ingredients. Innovation in packaging and distribution is expected to improve the local economy while preserving the environment. The novelty of the research lies in the integration of cultural, green economic, and health aspects into strategies for preserving the Jamu tradition amid modernization.

Abstract

This study examines the role of homeless people in the Indonesian Independence Revolution in Semarang City in the period 1945–1950. The main focus of the study includes the socio-economic background of the emergence of homeless people, their contribution in the physical struggle against the Japanese and Dutch troops, and their involvement in struggle organizations such as Laskar Kere and Laskar Jembel. Using historical research methods—including heuristics, source criticism, interpretation, and historiography—this study highlights how homeless people, despite being socially marginalized, actively participated as fighters and spies in the struggle for independence. The study also reveals the passive side of some homeless people who remained mired in poverty and were not involved in the revolution. The findings show that homeless people have a complex role, both as active actors in the revolution and as symbols of the social impact of war and colonialism. This study enriches the understanding of urban social dynamics in the history of the nation's struggle.

Abstract

Entering the 20th century, modernization became the central theme in the Dutch East Indies, especially in the cities where most Europeans lived. Semarang, as a municipality, is also trying to modernize; the government's main focus is to introduce a clean lifestyle and protect the European-style environment. The European view is used as the standard of cleanliness in Semarang, even though the native people have their own way of handling waste, such as community service work every week. In contrast, Europeans are used to a particular waste management team formed by the government. This research will explain how the waste management service was formed in Semarang and the government's efforts to educate the native community. This research uses historical research methods, namely heuristics (source collection), criticism (verification of sources obtained), interpretation (interpretation), and historiography (writing). The results show that the modernization promoted by the government cannot be separated from the proposal of several Europeans to bring the native community along in the process. Therefore, a waste management service and educational curriculum were formed. However, the success of government intervention to change lifestyles has not been completely successful because in the end many people still throw rubbish carelessly.

Abstract

Abstract

This study examines digital archives and collective memory in preserving the history of the Chinese community in Indonesia. From the colonial period through the New Order era, Chinese history experienced marginalization due to discriminatory policies and limited access to official state archives, hence being excluded from national historiography. In the Post-Reformation period, digital technology has opened new opportunities for the state, public institutions, and civil society to reconstruct, manage, and disseminate historical archives in a more inclusive manner. This research uses a descriptive qualitative approach with thematic analysis of digital archives, museums, community initiatives, manuscript digitization projects, and online platforms that play a role in preserving collective memory. The findings indicate that digital archives function as a public sphere that enables community participation, intergenerational dialogue, and reconciliation. The implications of this study highlight the importance of open digital archiving policies within public administration to ensure pluralistic historiography and public participation. This research recommends strengthening collaboration between government institutions, academic centers, and community-based organizations to sustain collective memory in the digital era.
