Abstract

Speaking ability is considered one of the most important indicators of successful English learning, especially in English as a Foreign Language (EFL) contexts. However, many students still experience difficulties in speaking English despite having received formal English instruction for many years. This study aims to explore the factors contributing to students’ limited speaking ability after long-term English learning experiences. This study employed a qualitative research design using a descriptive qualitative approach. The participants were university students from Universitas Dharmas Indonesia who were non-English major students and had learned English for several years through formal education. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews and documentation, and the data were analyzed using qualitative data analysis techniques consisting of data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing. The findings revealed that long-term English instruction did not automatically guarantee effective speaking ability. Students continued to experience speaking difficulties due to several internal and external factors. Internal factors included limited vocabulary mastery, pronunciation difficulties, speaking anxiety, fear of making mistakes, lack of confidence, and low motivation. Meanwhile, external factors involved teachers-centered teaching methods, limited speaking practice, limited exposure to English, unsupportive classroom environments, and lack of communicative activities. The findings also indicate a paradox between the length of English learning and students’ actual speaking performance. Although students had learned English for many years, their speaking ability remained limited because learning experiences were often dominated by theoretical knowledge rather than meaningful communication practice. Therefore, English learning should provide more opportunities for active language use, interaction, and communicative activities to supports students’ speaking development.

Abstract

ABSTRACT This study aims to determine the effect of using the Talking Stick cooperative learning model on third-grade English. This is due to the low learning outcomes in English. This quantitative study employed an experimental method with a pre-experimental design. The research design used was a One Group Pretest-Posttest Design. This design only uses one experimental group. The study was conducted at SDN 02 Tiumang, Tiumang District, Dharmasraya Regency. The sample consisted of 23 students, all third-grade students. The data collection instrument used was a 20-item multiple-choice test, which had been tested for validity and reliability. The results showed that the average pretest score was 60.43, while the average posttest score was 84.13. The average score obtained was a difference of -23.7. This difference indicates an increase in the score compared to the average pretest score, indicating that students experienced improved learning outcomes after being treated with the Talking Stick learning model. The description of the research data from the pretest-posttest data analysis in hypothesis testing, using the Paired Sample T-Test, shows that the Sig. (2-tailed) value is 0.000, which means it is less than 0.05 or 0.000 <0.05. Therefore, Ha is accepted while H0 is rejected. Therefore, it can be said that there is a significant influence between the Talking Stick Cooperative Learning Model and English learning in grade III of SDN 02 Tiumang.

Abstract

This research is motivated by the low learning outcomes of third-grade students in Indonesian language subjects, the lack of student attention and active participation during learning activities, the limited use of varied learning models, and the insufficient facilities and infrastructure that support the learning process. In the Indonesian language learning process, there is a discrepancy between expectations and reality. The aim of this study is to examine the effect of the Contextual Teaching and Learning (CTL) model on the Indonesian language learning outcomes of third-grade students at SDN 10 Pulau Punjung. This study is an experimental research employing a quasi-experimental design, specifically using the nonequivalent control group design. The research was conducted at SDN 10 Pulau Punjung. The population of this study includes all students in Class III/A and Class III/B. The sample consists of 29 students: 14 from Class III/A and 15 from Class III/B. The data collection technique used in this study is a test in the form of objective questions. The results show that the average post-test score of the control class was 80, while the experimental class scored an average of 87.2. The normality test resulted in significance values of 0.182 for the control class and 0.097 for the experimental class, indicating that both classes are normally distributed. The homogeneity test yielded a significance value of 0.957. The hypothesis testing using the Independent Samples Test showed a significance value of 0.025. Since 0.025 < 0.05, the result of the Independent Samples Test indicates that the null hypothesis (H0) is rejected and the alternative hypothesis (Ha) is accepted. It can be concluded that there is a significant effect of implementing the Contextual Teaching and Learning (CTL) model on the Indonesian language learning outcomes of third-grade students at SDN 10 Pulau Punjung.
