Abstract

According to information obtained from this community service activity, 80% people of Dersono Village work as farmers. The location of Dersono Village is within Gunungsewu Karst, which is known as a barren area. Therefore, it has been difficult for the villagers to get maximum harvests, which has impacted their economic standard of living. Being in the middle of the Karst area, Dersono Village has a potential that is the Maron River as it can be developed into a tourist attraction and become a source of the community's economy. In addition, Dersono Village has the potential with regard to their local commodities, namely coconuts, that can become superior products. The potential of this local coconut commodity can be developed as a superior processed product that can become a unique, distinctive souvenir and has more economic value rather than only selling the raw coconuts to collectors (intermediaries) or along the Maron River. To manage these existing potentials, adequate human resource skills are needed, one of which is through training in processing local products with economic value and activity in marketing processed local products. The training began with material delivery and continued with practices with the targeted community (PKK) to assess training achievement. A pre-test and post-test were administered on managing MSMEs, making and packaging coconut oil, and product marketing of blondo. The results were categorized on a scale of very low, low, medium, high, and very high understanding. The pre-test results showed 12.9% low, 48.4% medium, 35.5% high, and 3.2% very high. The post-test results showed significant differences, showing no low category, a decline in the moderate category to 16.1%, 61.3% for the high category, and 22.6% for the very high category. These results strongly suggest that there has been a significant improvement of the target community’s capacity after the training.

Abstract

An oxidation stability is very important for a long-term storage of biodiesel. Some physical (density and viscosity) and chemical properties (acid value, iodine value, and peroxide value) were analyzed to predict the oxidation stability for biodiesel produced from Waste Cooking Oil (WCO). WCO is one of the potential feedstocks in Indonesia, which is a large cooking oil consumer. Biodiesel from WCO was produced by transesterification process in 60 oC temperature for one hour reaction time. Methanol was added in 4:1 (v/v) ratio of WCO with 2% potassium hydroxide as a catalyst. This study observed the influence of tertiary butylhydroquinone (TBHQ), a synthetic antioxidant, on the oxidation stability of biodiesel. TBHQ was used as an antioxidant agent to prevent biodiesel oxidation for such long-term storage. It was blended with biodiesel at various concentrations (0-1200 ppm). Samples were taken every week to measure the density, viscosity, acid value, iodine value (IV) and peroxide value (PV) during the storage process of the biodiesel blends which was conducted for 4 weeks. The experimental results revealed that an improvement in oxidation stability was achieved in all TBHQ concentrations. All parameters meet Indonesia’s National Standards (SNI) for biodiesel added with TBHQ up to 1200 ppm. Biodiesel which was treated with 1200 ppm of TBHQ provided the best result, due to its density, viscosity, IV, and PV. However, TBHQ addition was did not affect the free fatty acid and acid number for 4 weeks of storage.

Abstract

The increasing environmental burden caused by plastic waste necessitates the exploration of sustainable alternatives such as starch-based biodegradable products. Sago starch, a renewable polysaccharide offers potential for such applications. However, its inherent limitations such as poor thermal stability and water resistance restrict its use in biodegradable product. This study investigates the effect of lintnerization, a mild acid hydrolysis process on the physicochemical properties of sago starch and evaluates its performance in biodegradable straw production. Sago starch was modified through a 120-hour lintnerization process using 2.2 N HCl, followed by washing and drying to obtain crystalline starch. The resulting starch was characterized by XRD and SEM, and its application in straws was assessed via yield, organoleptic tests, tensile strength, water resistance, and biodegradability. The yield of crystalline starch reached 99.89%, with organoleptic scores indicating good visual and textural quality. XRD analysis revealed an increase in crystallinity from 33.32% to 49.98%, while SEM confirmed significant granule degradation. Incorporating crystalline starch improved straw water resistance up to 83.65% and tensile strength up to 7.05 MPa fulfilling industry standards. However, the biodegradability test results were unreliable due to uncontrolled external factors. These findings demonstrate that lintnerization enhances starch performance for biodegradable applications.

Abstract

Unsaturated fatty acids are potential to be used for preventing degenerative diseases and developing brain function in babies. Separation of unsaturated fatty acids from saturated fatty acids efficiently achieved by urea complexation fractionation method. It is considered to be the simplest, most efficient, and lowest cost method. This study aimed to optimize urea complexation for increasing PUFA concentrations by determining solid-liquid equilibrium data of saturated fatty acids in short chain alcohols. In this study, there were two types of short chain alcohol, methanol and ethanol, in various concentrations (99,7%; 95%; 88%; 76% w/w) towards the solubility of saturated fatty acids, palmitic and stearic acid (PA and SA). PA and SA dissolved in various concentrations of methanol and ethanol to get homogeneous solutions. When solid SFA disappeared by heating the solution, or first formed by cooling the solution, the temperature was determined as the solid-liquid equilibrium temperature. The results showed that the best composition of solvent within high solubility level is ethanol 95% and methanol 99,7% over palmitic acid because it can dissolve at room temperature and below 0.01 mole fraction. Keywords:Alcohol, Fatty Acid, Solid-Liquid Equilibrium, Solubility
