Dental Laboratory of RSGM Faculty of Dental Medicine Universitas Airlangga provides services for Faculty of Dental Medicine, Universitas Airlangga students enrolled in a dental profession program. One of services offered is making of removable orthodontic appliances. Until now there has been no research on customer satisfaction after the appliances made in the laboratory. Purpose: This study was conducted to determine whether Universitas Airlangga dental students as customers were satisfied with the work of the RSGM Dental laboratory, particularly in orthodontics. Method: An analytic observational study was carried out on 48 Faculty of Dental Medicine Universitas Airlangga students who were enrolled in a dental profession program and made removable orthodontic appliances in RSGM Dental Laboratory. The students were asked to fill out a questionnaire about satisfaction regarding the timeliness, the suitability of results, the services provided, the quality of both active and passive components, the ease of insertion and activation. Data were analyzed descriptively. The relationship between satisfaction towards the quality of clasp, spring, bow and satisfaction towards the quality of acrylic plate to the ease of insertion were analyzed with Fischer exact test. The relationship between satisfaction towards the quality of clasp, spring, bow and satisfaction towards the quality of acrylic plate to the ease of activation were analyzed by chi square. Result: Respondents who were satisfied with the timeliness of work were 54.17%, the suitability of the results of the query were 79.17%, the services provided were 95.83%, the results of clasp, bow and spring were 72.92%, the results of acrylic plate were 77.08%, the ease of insertion were 54.17%, and the ease of activation were 89.58%. The results of the statistical analysis showed a significant correlation between the ease of insertion and the quality of clasp, spring and bow (p = 0.01) as well as acrylic plate made (p = 0.045 <0.05), however, there was no significant correlation between the ease of activation with quality of clasp, spring and bow (p = 0.08) and the acrylic plate made (p = 0.337 (p> 0.05)). Conclusion: It was concluded that the majority of respondents are satisfied with the results of removable orthodontic appliances produced, but punctuality still needs to be improved.

Abstract

Abstract

Dental and oral health problems are closely related to people's productivity. Data in Madura shows that many areas in Madura have many dental and oral problems, in which the majority of them have not received any treatment. Good quality dental and oral health education program is still needed in Madura. This community service activity is carried out through a dental and oral health promotion program that is developed according to the resources, facilities and infrastructure owned by the target partners. The activity chosen as a solution at this stage is dental health counseling, given to the target group of women and community leaders who can later be empowered by becoming dental cadres or agents of change. In addition, counseling among children was also carried out using the story telling method. The results for these two target groups indicate an increase in their knowledge which is expected to lead to improved behavior related to dental health in Madura in the future.

Abstract

The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) has introduced new impediments to delivering and accessing dental care. In light of the COVID-19 pandemic experience, research into anticipatory measures for pediatric dental care is necessary to prepare for future pandemics or other public health events. This study sought to explore factors influencing mothers’ anxiety over taking their children to the dentist during the COVID-19 pandemic. We conducted an explorative qualitative study with social cognitive theory (SCT) as its theoretical framework. In-depth interviews with mothers of children aged 6–12 years in five areas in Surabaya were selected as the method for answering the qualitative inquiries. To improve transparency, we employed a 32-item consolidated criteria for reporting qualitative research (COREQ) checklist. Thematic data analysis revealed three primary cross-cutting themes: internal (personal) factors, external (socio-environmental) factors, and interaction between internal factors and external factors. Based on the interviews, five internal factor sub-themes impacting maternal anxiety over child dental treatment emerged: knowledge, self-efficacy, risk perception, trust in a dentist, and experiences with a child’s dental visit. Moreover, three external factor sub-themes were noted: public transportation, bulk COVID-19 information, and costs. Findings revealed that internal and external factors interacted with each other and influenced maternal anxiety over pediatric dental care during the COVID-19 pandemic. This study benefits public health by contributing to the development of strategies and policies for dental health services under unforeseen health crises.

Abstract

ntimicrobial photodynamic treatment (aPDT) is a treatment method that links a light source to a photosensitizing carrier. There is no clear standardization regarding the exact therapeutic concentration when it is combined with curcumin or methylene blue, and there is no comparison of their activities toward S. mutans. We aimed to assess the best composition of the combination of aPDT and curcumin and with the combination of aPDT and methylene blue in reducing the number of S. mutans biofilms. The searches were carried out in Pubmed, ScienceDirect, and Proquest from 2015 to April 2023; collecting in-vitro and in-vivo research. Two authors independently reviewed studies, assessed their quality and eligibility, then extracted the data. 14 articles that met the inclusion criteria were retained. The final results were then grouped into 2, showing the effectiveness for a combination of aPDT and methylene blue and of aPDT and cucumin (9 and 5 articles, respectively). Each combination has different aPDT properties. The combination of aPDT and methylene blue is effective in reducing S. mutant biofilm in 660 nm diode laser wavelength and 40 mW output power. Furthermore, aPDT combined with curcumin is effective in reducing S. mutants biofilm in a wavelength of 405 nm and an irradiation time of 50-150 seconds. The addition of EDTA in a combination of aPDT and curcumin could increase its effectivity.
