Abstract

Abstract

Abstract

In the past five years, technology advances and fabrication feasibility like 3D printing has boost the do it your self-movement, and it is expanding beyond products to the materials that are labelled as DIY-materials. DIY- materials are created through individual or collective through self-production practices that involve a lot of creativity and innovative approach. One of these DIY-materials is upcycle-material. The pollution on landfill and ocean has encouraged us to be more responsible for the waste we create by recycling the waste and make it as new material. Eggshells and LPDE plastic bag waste are discussed in this paper. The perception between the two DIY-materials upcycle is compared using the material driven design approach (MDD). In MDD, sensorial, interpretation, affective and performative dimensions shape people’s perception and experience toward the materials. This approach is needed, to give waste material a new life and for it to be accepted on the market. Results from studies are the do and don’ts for product design process using eggshells and LDPE plastic bag waste. Imperfections through pattern, texture and colour are the qualities that people seek when interacting with DIY-upcycle materials. These qualities cannot be found in mass-produced industrial made material. Design principle such as balance, contrast, emphasis, movement, pattern, rhythm, and unity/variety needs to be well planned in making pattern, texture and colour because if it is done wrong, the material will be perceived back as waste.

Abstract

Study about packaging design within the context of packaging design communication is an interesting area to be researched; because there are designers’ intended impressions and users’ realized impressions of products. The paper tries to relate and evaluate the customer perceptions and design element used by designer to construct meaning by using semiotic theory. Local skin care packaging is taken as study case, because skin care product is a fast growing industry in Indonesia, proven there are numerous local brands offered in supermarket and often they changing their packaging. Therefore a study is needed for evaluating consumer perception on Indonesian skin care packaging, whether existing packaging already convey the product benefits effectively. A combination of literature study and quantitative data from semi structured questionnaires will collect experiential data accessing participant engagement in perceiving a range of packaging samples from selected Indonesian skin care brand: Martha Tilaar, Sariayu, Viva, and Citra. The study tries to provide design recommendation for future packaging design. Keywords : Visual element, packaging design, semiotics

Abstract

This research focused on deaf students in the third year of junior high school. When communicating in writing the structure of the grammar of deaf students is often reversed, ironically, they’re expected to pass on national test for normal students. This study uses a participatory design approach because all stakeholders involved in the design process are considered as coworkers in decision making. The designer, teacher and student are the stakeholders involved in this research. The group discussion forum was conducted to understand the types of games that are easy but fun to play for deaf students and to get feedback and recommendations for improvements from the games that have been made. This study produced language learning aids in the form of educational grammar games for third-year deaf students of junior high school. The theme of the grammar game that was appointed was adapted to the practical lessons at Yayasan Karya Dharma Wanita (YKDW), namely cooking and salons. The results of the study were tested in another deaf school which is Pangudi Luhur and the results were obtained that the product could be well received, even though they have different educational approach from YDKW. This study finally concluded that in Indonesia there isn’t standardization regarding the deaf kid’s education system.Key words: product design, language learning tools, deafness

Abstract

Footwear is essential human being to do many activities, such as working and relax activities. Footwear protects ourfoot from all kinds of objects that can be dangerous. Recently, there is healthy lifestyle trend, we can see from the emergence of many health products. One such product is the healthy sandals. However, these healthy sandals have problems such as they don't provide much health effects, but only give prejudice so that consumers want to buy it. In terms of product styling, they are very bad, so the target consumer is very specific, they don't have mass market interest. But there is a  design opportunity here. The solution proposed is to design a sandal with personalized insole, so customers can choose the most comfort insole to solve theirfoot problems such asflatfeet, pain in the metatarsal, heel pain, calluses, and a few other problems. Hopefolly with this concept finally health sandal can give healthy effect notjust a prejudice.  This project  is supported by a sandal manufacturer, PT. Abstract

Currently we are accustomed to disposable packaging, the habit generates a lot of waste because we are used to buying, use and dispose of when the lifespan has been exhausted with a consumption pattern like this, Indonesia has now become the world's second-largest plastic waste-producing country. With the product design approach, the student of Universitas Pelita Harapan (UPH) was tasked to recycle plastic waste in UPH environment into a functional product. Based on the results of observation and interviews, one of the waste plastic accumulated in UPH environment is the plastic shopping bag. LDPE is a thermoplastic. A type of plastic that can be formed repeatedly trough heat. The process starts by collecting, sorting, washing, then began the recycling process by heating it with oven and put them unto the mold.  The purpose is to create new material that has an aesthetic quality and good structure. After the waste is processed into a functional product, the results are socialized to students from other majors in a workshop, where each participant must bring their own plastic waste materials. The result of this research and community service is a reduction in  shopping bags waste that exists in UPH environment by 1%, increases millennials' awareness about plastic waste in UPH, and change their perception that garbage plastic bag shopping is not rubbish that should be discarded, but a material that is ready to be recycle and made into a functional product.
