Abstract

Abstract Studies on disasters in the recent decade tend to shift from problems and management to human and community approaches. This paper aims to describe disaster management from sociological perspective. It discusses various understandings, responses as well as the management patterns of local communities and other actors (organizations), who mostly experience contestations on the disaster management. Disaster management offers multidisciplinary approach combining concepts, conclusions, and analysis of sociology, public administration and other disciplines. Disasters are mostly related with individual’s or community’s knowledges as well as their strategies to cope with the hazards. Planning and preparedness activities to manage the disasters are more sustainable learning processes rather than end goals. Sociological perspective is not only knowledge, but also a mutual understanding process to arrange programs, priorities and strategies to cope with the hazards. The disaster management strategy incorporating human and communities are more effective; therefore, it should be embedded to their daily lives. Abstract

This study describes a proposed alternative method to qualitatively study global phenomena which create challenges to access informants due to either geographical or time availability constraints. A mix between the capturing and usage of secondary data obtained from the abundance of social media data, an established hermeneutic phenomenology method and triangulation with conventional method is proposed. A sample case on studying leadership in sustainable investing is featured to demonstrate the application of the method. Reasons for decision to invest through the SI strategy emerge from leaders’ insight obtained from the hermeneutic circles and were supported by direct interviews. There are four reasons for decision i.e., (1) climate change, (2) stakeholders’ demand alignment, (3) risk – performance consideration, and (4) value alignment. While other characteristics of transformation leadership is intellectual stimulation represents major finding from the data. The abundance of insights on the internet, along with established qualitative research methods, computer software, as well as accessible primary source represent opportunities to replicate the example to cover other topics.

Abstract

This study analyzed the founders’ values that contribute to the intergenerational succession of large family businesses that are considered conglomerates in Indonesia. The access to the informants in these large family businesses is scarce, especially due to the reserved nature of the family business. Thus, even though several researchers have addressed the relationship between values and longevity, the studies that allude to large family businesses in this emerging economy is still scant.  Besides, it is vital to investigate how the values of the founders affect the longevity of their large family businesses, considering the impact that these conglomerate groups have on Indonesia’s economy. The researchers employed the Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA) by interviewing 15 informants composing of successors and key non-family professionals from 5 conglomerate groups. Observations and field notes were also taken note of to triangulate with the interview data. This research induced new empirical insights into the founders’ values in transforming their family business management and longevity. The findings revealed that the founder's values of integrity and entrepreneurship are among the top, followed by modesty, trustworthiness, a higher purpose, and trust in God. These elicited values underpin the longevity of large family businesses into the next generations and enkindle potential avenues for future research.
